Guardiola's perfect record ends in haphazard fashion
The Club World Cup group stage had been plain sailing for Manchester City, winning all three games, but they fell at the first knockout hurdle following a haphazard defensive display. Pep Guardiola's side were often opened up on the counter-attack and made to pay heavily for their sloppiness at both ends of the pitch - failing to take a host of first-half chances. Advertisement The result also ends Guardiola's flawless record at the Club World Cup as manager of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City. The Spaniard had won all 11 of his previous matches at the tournament, conceding just four goals - but that total doubled in the space of 120 thrilling minutes in Orlando. "It wasn't a fluke but really worrying signs," former City goalkeeper Shay Given said on Dazn. "Al-HIlal could have scored even more. It is a real worry the chances they gave up." For Guardiola, the task now is to sort out the issues they faced in Florida before the Premier League opener at Wolves on 16 August.

Fabrizio Romano provides MASSIVE Darwin Nunez to Napoli update
Liverpool are moving on to phase two of their summer transfer plans. Having secured Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez - as well as confirming the permanent arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili - the Reds now require sales. Those incoming deals cost Liverpool a little under £200m and if ambitions of a new striker and a new centre-back are to come to fruition then outgoings are going to now be necessary. Advertisement We've already seen Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher and Nat Phillips depart on permanent deals and several more first-team squad members are under consideration for exits. Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott are among the attacking contingent who could leave. But perhaps the most transformative signing would be Darwin Nunez. Napoli want Nunez Signed from Benfica for a fee that could reach £85m back in 2022, Nunez would earn the club more than any other player deemed transferrable. Liverpool turned down deals with Saudi Pro League sides in January due to a lack of viable alternatives but there are teams in the SPL still willing to pay around £70m for the Uruguayan. Advertisement The problem is that Nunez has got his eye on a move to Napoli and so far the Italian champions are not playing ball. Ideally, Antonio Conte's side meet the asking price - which would then allow Liverpool to spend on a high-quality replacement. Liverpool and Napoli still far apart However, according to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is at a standstill, which could bring other teams back to the table eventually. 'There could be many signings for Liverpool this summer, but also for Liverpool the situation is very clear – they also need some outgoings,' he wrote in Caught Offside. 'So don't forget about the situation of Darwin Nunez, because there is interest from Napoli, but at the moment no agreement between club to club on the transfer fee. Advertisement 'There is still a gap between Liverpool and Napoli and this is a significant gap as of today on the valuation of the player. 'Then let's see what happens with more clubs in Europe and also in Saudi, who are also interested, because Darwin Nunez will be for sure one to watch in this summer's transfer window.'

Club World Cup exit as painful as Champions League elimination
Bernardo Silva is refusing to look at Manchester City's shock exit from the Club World Cup as a blessing in disguise. The Premier League outfit crashed out of the competition in the early hours of Tuesday morning as they were beaten 4-3 in extra time by Saudi outfit Al-Hilal after a pulsating last-16 clash in Orlando. Advertisement City had established themselves as one of the favourites to triumph in the United States after winning all three of their group games in convincing fashion. A run to the final would have prolonged their campaign until July 13, however, just five weeks before the next Premier League season begins. After much debate about the impact of the Club World Cup on player welfare, there is a feeling in some quarters that City – after an underwhelming 2024-25 season – need the rest, but Silva does not see it that way. The City captain said: 'No-one wanted to lose. We are very used to not having holidays, unfortunately, because the schedule is crazy and when we are in a competition we take it very seriously. Advertisement 'We had a lot of ambition for this Club World Cup and we wanted to win it.' Asked if the defeat hurt as much as Champions League elimination, Silva said: 'Yes, a little bit. Yes.' City had taken early control with a ninth-minute goal from Silva at the Camping World Stadium, but they were to rue missing a succession of chances to increase the lead before the break. Al-Hilal turned the game around through Marcos Leonardo and Malcom and reclaimed the advantage again with a Kalidou Koulibaly header after Erling Haaland forced extra time. Phil Foden made it 3-3, but City could not regain the initiative and Leonardo settled an eventful contest – and secured a statement victory for Saudi football – with 112 minutes on the clock. Advertisement Silva said: 'There was always a feeling of danger coming from them when they recovered the ball in transition and their counters. We allowed them to run way too many times. 'But apart from that we had chances. We scored three goals and we could have scored five or six. 'They punished us. They have a good team with a lot of individual quality and congratulations to them.' Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves impressed in the Al-Hilal midfield and fellow Portuguese Joao Cancelo was a threat against his old City team-mates. Silva, also a Portugal international, said: 'I have friends there, I know most of their players and I know the quality they have. Advertisement 'We were expecting another difficult game like Juventus and when you don't control transitions then good players, like Al-Hilal have, punish you. That's what happened.' City begin the new Premier League season at Wolves on August 16. Silva said: 'We will try to have as much rest as possible but also come back to prepare for the season properly.'
