US man gets life for beheading father as political statement and posting video

Yahoo15 hours ago
A Pennsylvania man has been ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted of fatally shooting his federal government employee father, decapitating him and brandishing the severed head in an online video that called for the execution of other civil servants.
Justin Mohn, 33, was sentenced on Friday after a five-day trial by a judge that found him guilty of murder and terrorism charges, Pennsylvania state prosecutors said.
Mohn's conviction is the first time anyone in Pennsylvania has been found guilty under the state's terrorism statute. The local district attorney, Jennifer Schorn, said 'the chilling use of [Mohn's] father's death as a political statement' helped 'underscore the extreme danger he poses'.
Among the most damning pieces of evidence in the case was a 15-minute video published on YouTube after the slaying of Michael Mohn, 68, who had long worked for the US army corps of engineers. In it, Justin Mohn, his son, spouted rightwing conspiracy theories, lobbied for militias to torture and execute his father's fellow federal government colleagues, and denounced immigration, LGBTQ+ people, the Black Lives Matter movement and antifascist activists.
YouTube removed the video after it had accumulated about 5,000 views in a few hours, the Washington Post noted.
Denice Mohn, Justin's mother, came home from work on 30 January 2024 to find her husband dead and beheaded in the bathroom, with a machete and a large knife nearby, said Schorn's office.
An autopsy determined her husband had been shot in the head before his decapitation.
Denice said at trial that she believed Justin had a normal relationship with his father, but he had struggled to retain employment after graduating from Penn State, which he blamed on the federal government and the educational system.
After killing his father, Justin Mohn drove to a national guard training center, where he evidently hoped to convince troops to turn on the federal government, prosecutors alleged.
He acknowledged midway through his trial that he had killed his father. But he maintained that the killing resulted from an attempted citizen's arrest that he botched when his father resisted.
Prosecutor Edward Louka dismissed Justin Mohn's explanation as 'complete and utter nonsense'.
'He ambushed his dad when he was most vulnerable,' Louka said in court. 'His plan was to murder a longtime federal employee, his father, and order the murder of other federal employees for his warped belief that the government adopt his policies above all else.'
After Pennsylvania state court judge Stephen A Corr returned the guilty verdict, Mohn's sister read a statement in court describing how her family felt 'violated by the defendant's extremely calculated and premeditated betrayal and from the posting of the horrifying video that he published online for thousands to see'.
'The awareness that my own brother is capable of such atrocities is terrifying,' Stephanie Mohn said in court, according to prosecutors' statement. 'That person we grew up with is long gone.'
In their statement, prosecutors made it a point to allude to Michael Mohn's reputation of being 'a loving husband' as well as a 'father who was always there for his children'.
'Notably, he continued to provide significant emotional and financial support to … Justin, even into his 30s, as Justin struggled with unemployment and finding his path,' Schorn's office said of Michael. 'This tireless support underscored Michael's deep, unconditional love.'

Megyn Kelly and Ben Shapiro Spar Over Jeffrey Epstein Files

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Right-wing influencers Megyn Kelly and Ben Shapiro locked horns over the Jeffrey Epstein investigation on Monday, as MAGA continues revolting over the Trump administration's handling of the case. Why It Matters The administration ignited a firestorm of criticism from the president's base when the Department of Justice (DOJ) said last week that Epstein, a financier and sex offender, died by suicide in 2019 in his Manhattan jail cell, confirming the findings of federal and local investigators. The department also said it would not release any more information regarding the Epstein probe to the public. The memo infuriated Kelly and other high-profile members of Trump's coalition, who for years have peddled conspiracy theories claiming Epstein was murdered and that the government covered up an extensive list of wealthy politicians and businesspeople who were involved with Epstein. Megyn Kelly and Ben Shapiro discussed the Jeffrey Epstein files on the July 14 episode of Kelly's YouTube show. Megyn Kelly and Ben Shapiro discussed the Jeffrey Epstein files on the July 14 episode of Kelly's YouTube show. YouTube/Megyn Kelly What To Know Kelly has been among the most outspoken voices in the MAGA sphere—attacking Attorney General Pam Bondi and the DOJ—accusing them of engaging in a cover-up in connection to the Epstein memo. She and Shapiro duked it out over Epstein when Shapiro appeared on the former Fox News host's eponymous YouTube show Monday. Kelly said she has her "own sources high up in the law enforcement" apparatus who believe Epstein was "an agent" and that he didn't kill himself. Shapiro pushed back: "I mean, that's fine, then they should come out and they should say that. And then they should say who's covering that up." "Ben, they can't," Kelly shot back. "I mean, there are a lot of people who say they can't, right? They can't because, let's look at what the administration is saying right now, they don't want to be the one to cross [President Donald] Trump." Shapiro countered that the public and Trump's base should put more weight on the administration's statements because Bondi, Trump, FBI Director Kash Patel and other high-ranking officials have signed their names to them. Shapiro went on to say that Kelly's sources should also go public, because "otherwise, we're just in the realm of pure speculation and, frankly, I just don't find that useful." "I can claim that [Epstein] was working for a cadre of space aliens who are blackmailing high-profile Americans in order to protect from a future invasion," Shapiro said. "And there's just about as much evidence for that as many of the claims that were being made on the other side." The money is super suspicious…'@BenShapiro and @MegynKelly debate whether Jeffrey Epstein was an intelligence asset for America or Israel. Watch and download: — The Megyn Kelly Show (@MegynKellyShow) July 14, 2025 Kelly isn't the only faithful MAGA supporter clamoring for more details from the administration about the Epstein investigation, despite Trump and Bondi resisting those demands. Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist, has repeatedly called for Trump to appoint a special prosecutor to release all documents related to the Epstein investigation. Laura Loomer, far-right commentator and one of the most influential voices in Trump's political circle and in his broader MAGA coalition, warned on X: "People make their own choices and decisions, but mark my word, the lack of actual results at the DOJ and lack of transparency that translates into incompetence will cost the GOP House and Senate seats. Don't say I didn't warn you." Kelly also continued hammering the attorney general, even after Trump rallied to Bondi's defense in a Truth Social post on Saturday. "What's going on with my 'boys' and, in some cases, 'gals?'" Trump wrote. "They're all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! We're on one Team, MAGA, and I don't like what's happening." "We have a PERFECT Administration, THE TALK OF THE WORLD, and 'selfish people' are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein," Trump continued. Kelly took to X to air her grievances, writing: "I'm sure it's a relief for Pam Bondi to hear the president is still in her corner. Unfortunately, huge swaths of the party are not. She repeatedly misled on Epstein. Then didn't have the courage to explain herself. Suddenly, she's camera shy & no Qs allowed. Good luck!" Why Is MAGA Upset About the Epstein Files? Last week's memo from the DOJ undercut years of public statements from top Trump allies and administration officials. The White House in February invited a group of far-right influencers for a visit and gave them binders marked, "The Epstein Files: Phase 1" and "Declassified." The binders contained information that had already largely been in the public domain. Bondi in May said there were "tens of thousands of videos of Epstein with children or child porn," which fueled a belief among some MAGA influencers that the government had intentionally suppressed details about powerful figures being linked to Epstein. "It's a new administration and everything is going to come out to the public," Bondi also said. She later claimed that Epstein's "client list" was "sitting on my desk" and waiting to be reviewed. In addition to fueling a public revolt, last week's Epstein memo created fissures within the top ranks of the DOJ and FBI, culminating in FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino reportedly fleeing Washington, D.C., and threatening to resign in protest over the memo and Bondi's handling of the case. Bongino has spent years promoting the right-wing conspiracy theory that Epstein was murdered as part of a "deep state" cover-up. Turning Point USA founder and right-wing podcast host Charlie Kirk also spent the weekend talking about Epstein and questioning why the administration hadn't released more, though he later changed course, saying Monday that he's "done" discussing Epstein. The reversal came after Trump and Kirk had a phone call over the weekend, multiple media outlets reported. Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, also told MAGA influencer Benny Johnson in an interview Monday that she believes the administration will put out more information in connection to the Epstein case, a sign that Trump's inner circle is taking public pushback over the investigation seriously. Trump "hears all the noise" around the Epstein case and will "set things right," the president's daughter-in-law told Johnson. "There needs to be more transparency" related to the government's investigation into Epstein's 2019 death, Lara Trump added. "I think that will happen. I know this is important to the president. He is frustrated." The White House did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on whether it plans to release more documents related to the Epstein probe. What People Are Saying Lara Trump also told Benny Johnson on Monday: "He is going to want to set things right. I believe there will be more coming and anything they are able to release, they will try to get out. They hear it and understand it. "To anyone worked up out there, there is no plot to keep this information away. I'm sure we will know down the line." House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Monday that the Trump administration should release all files related to the disgraced financier and alluded to speculation about Trump being in the files: "The American people deserve to know the truth. What, if anything, is the Trump administration and the Department of Justice hiding?" Infowars host Alex Jones, who has espoused Epstein-related conspiracy theories for years, said on his show last week: "This is over-the-top sickening. Next they'll say Jeffrey Epstein never even existed. This is the swamp winning. No one is buying this." Loomer added during a livestream: "Pam Bondi is a coward. She didn't even sign her name to the memo. This isn't transparency—it's a cover-up." The Associated Press contributed reporting to this article.

That's it, Big Bird — time for you, and PBS, to get off the Washington gravy train

Big Bird deserves to lose this time. In the past, whenever Republicans have tried to cut federal funding for public broadcasting, the eight-foot-two-inch-tall yellow bird has been trotted out as an exemplar of all that is good and necessary about PBS, and the federal dollars have been preserved. Perhaps our Jim Henson-created feathered friend will continue his undefeated streak, but a Trump-backed recissions bill represents the best chance to defund public broadcasting in decades, if not ever. The bill, clawing back previously appropriated funding, has already passed the House and is now being considered in the Senate, where the filibuster doesn't apply. The measure targets $9.4 billion in federal spending, including funds for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The CPB gets about $500 million a year from the federal government, and parcels it out to NPR, PBS and local public radio and TV stations. NPR maintains that it only gets about 2% of its funding from the federal government, with more coming indirectly via member stations. PBS gets about 15% of its funding from the feds. If NPR and PBS programming is as compelling and vital as its defenders say, it shouldn't be a heavy lift to get foundations, philanthropists and devoted listeners and viewers to fill any funding gap. The organizations have already given out a lot of tote bags during fundraising drives. Surely, they can give out some more. Decades ago, with the rise of cable TV and a proliferation of sources of news and entertainment, it seemed absurd for the government to have to prop up a few select media sources. How much more ridiculous it is now, in the age of YouTube, social media, satellite radio, Substack, streaming services and podcast platforms. Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Public Broadcasting Act creating the CPB in 1967, and like many other Great Society programs, public broadcasting is an anachronism that won't go away. Big Bird himself is approaching the age when he'll soon begin to be eligible for senior-citizen discounts. Supporters of public broadcasting extol the virtues of 'All Things Considered,' the 'PBS NewsHour,' and 'Frontline' — and yes (political bias aside), journalists do some good work for these programs. They also (again, political bias aside) do some good work at the New York Times and CBS News, yet neither of these of these outlets depend on federal tax dollars. Oh, defenders also ask, how can we possibly do without the wonder of educational programming like 'Sesame Street' and 'Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood'? 'Sesame Street' is, indeed, an American institution. But even if PBS collapsed tomorrow, the show would certainly go on. For about a decade now, new episodes have been featured on HBO or Netflix, demonstrating how a venerable 50-year-old project can adapt to the times. It's simply not true, by the way, that we depend on PBS for good shows for kids. There's been educational programming developed by Nickelodeon ('Blue's Clues & You!'), Scholastic Entertainment ('The Magic School Bus'), and Netflix ('Ask the StoryBots' and 'Ada Twist, Scientist'). And somehow such iconic children's programming as 'Dora the Explorer,' 'Peppa Pig' and 'Bluey' were created without the involvement of PBS. It's true that small stations could go out of business, but as anyone who has been paying attention has noticed, we live in an era of great media churn. Private media entities are going out of business — and being created — all the time. The government shouldn't extend its favor to a few select outlets. Especially not when these outlets are so blatantly and pervasively biased. NPR and PBS provide left-of-center content for left-of-center audiences under the guise of objectivity. As many legacy media organizations have long demonstrated, there is a business model there, but it's not one that deserves or needs taxpayer support. Big Bird should, finally, make his own way in the world. Twitter: @RichLowry

Zohran Mamdani campaign intern exposed for advocating activist ‘jihad' — another sign of radicalism in his movement

A former Zohran Mamdani intern proudly declared activism is 'all jihad' and encouraged protesters to get suspended or arrested in defiance of the West's 'settler colonialism'. 'The true believer knows that none of this is in vain, that this is all Jihad,' said Hadeeqa Malik in the recently resurfaced video, using the controversial Muslim term for holy war. 'So, the conversation of doxing, the conversation of getting arrested and suspended, I think it's time for Muslims to start to say alright, alright so what?' Advertisement According to Malik's LinkedIn, she served as a Communications, Outreach, Policy, and Constituent Services Intern at the State Assembly Office of Zohran Mamdani for the summer of 2024. A photo shows the pair smiling for a selfie. 8 Hadeeqa Arzoo Malik worked for Zohran Mamdani as an intern in the summer of 2024. Ron Adar / M10s / Advertisement Malik, who is a student at City College of New York (CCNY), made her statement on a CUNY4Palestine webinar entitled 'Islamic Political Activism,' which she shared to her LinkedIn account ten months ago. It's frightening proof that a radical faction of pro-Palestine youth activists appear to be motivated less by humanitarian concern for civilians in Gaza than by extremist fervor. In the video, Malik refers to 'genocide and colonization and settler colonialism,' and calls out other Muslims who haven't taken an activist stand. 'If you're not seeing this as your issue to deal with, then something is wrong, there is an illness, there is a disease, something messing up the system inside that's telling you this isn't your business,' she said. Advertisement In response to concerns about getting doxed, suspended, and arrested, she asked, 'How gangster are you?… And I know everybody has their own families and has an education and everything, it's just a question.' She continued, 'If you get suspended, if you get doxed, because it's bound to happen… when you're doing something for the sake of Allah here in the West it will never, ever be in vain, and the true believer does not fear that.' While the original YouTube video of the webinar has been made private, it was reposted in its entirety by another user. 8 Malik confronted police officers in a resurfaced video, calling them 'pigs.' Advertisement 8 Malik was seen on video berrating a Muslim NYPD officer, Tasnim Rafid, during a protest in Feb. 2025. 8 Malik participated in a webinar about Islamic Political Activism sponsored by CUNY4Palestine. Stu Stu Studio/ YouTube While only a college student, Malik has already managed to embed herself in influential hubs of activism — from Columbia Palestine protests and Students for Justice in Palestine, to the Council on American–Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Zohran Mamdani's circle. Mailk, who was present at pro-Palestine protests at Columbia University, lists herself as the president of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at the City College of New York from June 2024 to June 2025, where she is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in international relations with a minor in human rights. Malik also purports to be an Outreach Coordinator for CAIR and a Racial Justice Fellow at the Colin Powell School for Civil and Global Leadership. Neither Mamdani's nor CAIR's spokespeople responded to The Post for comment about Malik's purported affiliation. Malik also did not respond to a request. This isn't even the first scandal she's found herself embroiled in. Another recently resurfaced video shows Malik berating a Muslim NYPD officer at a pro-Palestine rally. The video, originally posted in February, depicts her leading a chant as fellow protesters follow along. Advertisement 8 Malik's LinkedIn lists her as a former Communications, Outreach, Policy, and Constituent Services intern for Mamdani. Linkedin/Hadeeqa Arzoo Malik 8 Malik was the president of CUNY's Students for Justice in Palestine chapter for a year. Linkedin/Hadeeqa Arzoo Malik 'Let's read the badges of the pigs,' she says, as she faces down a police line and reads cops' names aloud. She singled out a visibly uncomfortable officer, seeming to imply he was bringing shame to his traditionally Muslim name: 'To the pigs who can call themselves by the name of Islam — put some respect on their names!' Advertisement The cop, standing stoically but clearly disturbed, was ultimately relieved by a fellow officer and was mocked as he stepped back. Mailk displays an incredibly disturbing pattern of behavior — especially for someone so entrenched in influential activist spheres. Of course, Mamdani is not responsible for the actions of all his interns. And surely she does not speak for every pro-Palestine protester, let alone for the Muslim community. But Malik's rhetoric reveals that not all pro-Palestine activists are simply taking to the streets out of concern for Gaza. Some are acting on a deeper, more fanatic fire burning inside of them. Advertisement What she's demonstrated is a hostility towards fellow Muslims, like the NYPD officer, who stand with law and order, coupled with a passion for advocating animosity, agitation, and literal 'jihad' in her community. It's frightening to hear such extremism from the mouth of a young college student in America — and something that genuine pro-Palestine activists urgently ought to distance themselves from, for the sake of their cause.
