Neena Gupta Recalls Her 'First Love' With An IITian: ‘My College Fellows Were Jealous'
Neena Gupta is an open book. She has never shied away from talking about her past relationships. Her first marriage was with Amlan Kusum Ghose. It was a short-lived union and the duo amicably parted ways within a year of their marriage. Following a brief engagement and another relationship with former West Indies cricketer Vivian Richards, she tied the knot for the second with Vivek Mehra, a New Delhi-based chartered accountant in a private ceremony in the United States in 2008.
Now, speaking exclusively to News18 Showsha, Neena opens up on meeting her first husband and how one of their first dates went wrong due to her classmates. 'My first love was with an IIT guy, who I went on to marry eventually. My college fellows used to be very jealous of me at that time. Their parents wouldn't allow them to war spaghetti straps and I was a modern woman, according to them. Woh salwar kameez-chunni waale the aur woh mujhse jalte the," she recalls.
The actor, who was recently seen in Metro In Dino, further continues, 'This one time, my then-boyfriend and I decided to go watch a film. I revealed my plans to one of those girls by mistake and then they went and told my mother that main ek ladke ke saath picture dekhne jaa rahi hoon. My parents didn't let me go to. Back then, we didn't have phones and so, I couldn't inform him. He kept waiting for me."
But in a surprising turn of events, she reveals that barring one relationship, she found herself questioning if she has even fallen head-over-heels in love with a man. 'I've never been in love. The love that I see in movies and read in books, I've never experienced that in real life. Nobody has loved me like that. Toh main bhi kaise kar loon? Karna bhi toh padhega na kisi ko. Mere peeche koi paagal nahi hua (laughs). But I had madly fallen in love with someone. It didn't translate into a relationship because it wasn't possible," she shares.
According to Neena, the biggest issue that couples deal with is opening up to each other about their deepest vulnerabilities. And that, she believes, often resurfaces during arguments, leading to heartbreaks and breach of trust. 'I often tell Masaba (Gupta) to keep her personal emotions to herself and not talk about it to anyone. I tell her to not talk about her past. The idea is to be in the present," says Neena, who became a grandmother in October last year.
The other thing that the Badhaai Ho and Uunchai actor feels has further complicated modern-day relationships is dating apps, which has made people commitment phobic. 'I know of young people who're sick and tired of dating apps. I'm shocked! I never wish for dating apps to exist during my time. I would say that I'm very old school and I prefer to wear pure cotton and pure silk rather than synthetic fabrics. Dating apps too are synthetic," she remarks.

The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 3: Vijay Verma reveals he ran away from home to pursue his dream of acting; Jitendra Kumar on being a IT graduate
The couch is packed, the stories are wild, and the laughter? Non-stop. This Saturday, The Great Indian Kapil Show is rolling out a fun-filled episode featuring OTT's finest: , , , and . Tired of too many ads? go ad free now These four aren't just powerhouse performers — turns out, they're also loaded with the kind of backstories you'd expect in a movie… and maybe even wilder. We have always heard of the 'Struggle' and are inspired by the lengths an actor who loves their craft can go to for a role, for a chance and to create impact. But listening to some of India's biggest streaming stars speak about their big break, who they were before they got it and how passionate they were in their resolve to make it happen is what inspired us the most during this episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show. Jeetu, our favourite professor from Kota Factory wasn't just portraying a role of preparing students for IIT but has experienced the IIT life himself. His choice of career after being an IIT graduate came as a shock to Kapil, to which Pratik Gandhi promptly replied, 'Engineering ke baad aap ko sach mein pata chalta hai ki aapko life mein kya karna hai.' We know many viewers watching at home will definitely begin nodding at the truth to that statement. The flip side to Pratik and Jeetu being engineers who found acting by chance are Vijay Verma and Jaideep Ahlawat who knew they wanted to be actors from the start. From Vijay Verma sharing, 'Maine ek dost ko bola mera selection ho gaya mere paas paise nahin hai zyada, usne paise dediye fees ke, maine kaha ab permission toh nahin milegi ghar se, bhaagte hai, toh main ghar se bhaag gaya!' and Jaideep sharing about how he and Vijay have been batchmates since FTII and used to dream of the day they would see themselves on the big screen. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now When you watch this episode of TGIKS it feels like the famous SRK Om-Shanti-Om dialogue coming to life. Because the universe really has given these 4 their well deserved fame that continues to grow. Given the amount of success the actors have had, Sunil Grover aka Diamond Raja will be teaching them how to navigate the success with his 'audition anthem' that could give Bollywood item songs a run for their money! He also teaches them how to strike left, right, and 'open-to-options' poses to prepare for their Oscar moment. If all the anecdotes, running away and engineering waala pyaar stories were not enough, we also managed to see Jaideep groove on stage with the airport security divas Sona and Mona (you know WHO they are) who are rulers of the airport rather than guards. While Jaideep's acting is always razor sharp his moves too are quite 'qatal'! And just when you think the episode can't pack any more surprises — Korean superstar Jackson Wang lands on the TGIKS set, making this one of the most unexpected and exciting episodes of the season so far where K-pop meets Ka-Pil. Arshad Warsi opens up about being replaced by Salman Khan in 'Bigg Boss', Akshay Kumar in 'Jolly LLB 2'

‘Metro... In Dino' Box Office collection day 6: Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Pankaj Tripathi and Neena Gupta's film inches closer to Rs 25 crore
Anurag Basu 's film 'Metro... In Dino', starring a wonderful mix of actors like Sara Ali Khan , Aditya Roy Kapur , Neena Gupta , Anupam Kher , Konkona Sen Sharma , Pankaj Tripathi and Ali Fazal , is enjoying a steady run at the box office. Crosses Rs 24 crore in just six days As per Sacnilk, 'Metro... In Dino' has managed to pull in over Rs 24 crore in its first six days. By Wednesday, the film's total collection is nearing closer to Rs 35 crore and stood at a solid Rs 24.50 crore. On day 6 itself, the film earned Rs 2.25 crore (as per early estimates). This might look small next to some of the recent big Bollywood releases, but for a simple, slice-of-life drama like this, it's quite an decent. Good start and a steady hold 'Metro... In Dino' opened with Rs 3.5 crore on its first day. It then ended its opening weekend on a high, collecting a total of Rs 16.17 crore. That's a strong start for a film that depends more on stories and performances than on flashy action or big-scale sets. How full were the theatres? On Wednesday, 9 July 2025, the film saw an overall occupancy of 14.59% across India. The morning shows had an occupancy of 8.37%. But as the day moved on, things got better. The afternoon shows recorded 15.06%, evening shows climbed to 16.33%, and by night, occupancy had touched 18.61%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo A fresh look at city love stories 'Metro... In Dino' gives us another peek into how love and life work out in busy city spaces. Much like Basu's earlier film 'Life... In A Metro', this one also ties together different stories about love, heartbreak, trust and new beginnings, all set against the noise and rush of urban life. Konkona Sen Sharma is the only actor returning from the original film. She brings her usual quiet strength. Neena Gupta adds her own charm and depth. Meanwhile, Sara Ali Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal and Aditya Roy Kapur bring a young, breezy vibe. Veterans like Anupam Kher and Pankaj Tripathi add warmth and gentle humour. Film review 'The Times of India', in its review, pointed out both the lovely parts and the slightly weaker bits of the film. It reads, "Despite being largely pleasant, some tracks don't quite add up, feel uneven and don't know where to end. After an engaging build up, the second half feels a tad stretched. You also wish the story scratched the surface a little more, especially for Konkona-Neena Gupta track, where the actors have the potential and gravitas to dig deeper. " But the review also made it clear why the film still works in today's times. It said,'There has been a scarcity of love stories in Bollywood and Metro In Dino, elevated by some fine performances, fills that gap perfectly. It is a breezy, intimate watch tailor-made for a rainy day."
