The Hindu23-05-2025
Industries, Commerce, and Food Processing Minister T.G. Bharat on Friday laid the foundation stones for a cluster of 31 development projects at an estimated cost of ₹12.28 crore in 19 divisions of the Kurnool Municipal Corporation. The works include CC roads, drainage lines, public toilets, pavements, and a display of air-quality boards.
Addressing the public, Mr. Bharat said that efforts are underway to give Kurnool a fillip on the lines of Visakhapatnam. 'The prime focus will be on roads, drainage, street lighting, and sanitation. I urge the contractors and officials to expedite the works and strive for completion at the earliest,' he said.
The Minister also launched the works for a bypass road passing through the SAP camp, which would likely ease traffic snarls on the Kurnool-Bellary road, and facilitate a congestion-free traffic on the Kurnool-Hyderabad road. Mr. Bharat further promised that he would work for a permanent solution to the issue of waterlogging under the Ashok Nagar railway bridge during the rainy season.
The Minister reiterated that the Orvakal Industrial Park would be developed with ₹2,700 crore and the investors are from the areas of semiconductor and electric vehicle manufacturers. 'We propose to operate daily flight services between Orvakal and Vijayawada from June 2. Union Minister Rammohan Naidu and IndiGo officials also responded positively to the proposed move,' he said.
Officials of the Kurnool Municipal Corporation said that the funding included ₹3.59 crore from the general funds, ₹5.84 crore under NCap, and ₹2.82 crore from the 15th Finance Commission. Senior cadres from the alliance parties and officials of various government departments were present.

India rolls out targeted air pollution control plans for 130 major cities

New Delhi: In a bid to tackle worsening air quality in India's major cities, the government has launched targeted clean air action plans across 130 cities with over 1 million residents each, minister of state for environment, forest and climate change Kirti Vardhan Singh said on Thursday. The city-specific plans, part of the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), will target air polluting sources like soil and road dust, vehicles, domestic fuel, municipal solid waste burning, construction material, and industries, the minister told Parliament. Air pollution in India, especially in its big cities, is a major issue, and it is severely affecting public health and the overall quality of life. The government had launched the NCAP in 2019 to reduce air pollution. Source Apportionment (SA) studies conducted in cities under the NCAP reveals that dust from road and construction and demolition activities are the major sources of PM10 that contributes 40-50% to the pollution in most cities. SA is defined as a local study that determines the contributing sources to ambient particulate matter (PM) measured at monitoring stations. Under the NCAP, the cities have prioritized road improvement works, traffic decongestion, junction improvements, and greening of open spaces under the specific action plans, Singh said. Around ₹ 13,036 crore has been released for the 130 cities under NCAP from the start of FY20 to 20 July, 2025 towards implementation of various activities to control air pollution. Of this amount, ₹ 9,209 crore has been utilized by urban local bodies. Specific actions towards the control of industrial pollution are primarily being implemented by industries and the monitoring and enforcement of emission norms are being carried out by the state pollution control boards. To address vehicular pollution, the government has notified BS-VI emission norms for fuels, leapfrogging from BS-IV. The central government has also launched schemes such as PM E-DRIVE and PM-eBus Sewa to promote electric mobility. In order to control biomass burning in agricultural fields, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has framed guidelines to provide a one-time financial assistance for setting up of paddy straw-based pelletisation and torrefaction plants that may help address the supply chain issues and the issue of open burning of paddy straw in fields in north India. The Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and adjoining areas (CAQM) has also issued directions for co-firing of 5-10% biomass with coal in thermal power plants located within 300 km of Delhi, and in captive power plants of industrial units located in NCR. Performance-based grants are also being released to urban local bodies of the earmarked 130 cities under NCAP through the Central Sector Scheme Control of Pollution and the 15th Finance Commission (XVFC) air quality grants for implementation of the activities of approved city action plans. The minister also rejected a private entity report,'World Air Quality Report 2024', which had ranked India as world's fifth most-polluted country. Singh said, as per report, 38% of data sources are from government agencies and the remaining 62% is from other agencies. The data used for analysis includes data generated through low-cost sensors (LCS), which is not used for regulatory purposes. The data from a variety of monitors and data sources may have a degree of error and uncertainty and is, therefore, prone to be misleading, the minister told Parliament.

We should attract new industries, provide jobs to youth, says Telangana Minister Sridhar Babu

HYDERABAD: The state should attract new industries and provide employment to youth — this is the firm commitment of our government, said IT & Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu. During a meeting with the representatives of several industrial associations, including CII, FICCI, FTCCI, ALIP, TIF, TOPMA and TS TMA, held at the Secretariat on Wednesday, Sridhar Babu said: 'We stand by the industrialists contributing to the state's progress. We have no intention of burdening them under the guise of laws and regulations. We will safeguard every industry in the state. We will support the MSME sector, which is the backbone of the state's economy and also protect the welfare of the workers.' He said that the state government would take suggestions from all quarters for the state's development as it was committed to implementing them. He said that the government was committed to industrial development and resolved to make industries partners in the development. Sridhar Babu claimed that Telangana became a role model for other states in industrial growth. Under the leadership of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Telangana has attracted more than Rs 3 lakh crore worth investment proposals in just one-and-a-half years, he said. 'Over one lakh jobs have been created in the private sector. However, parties like BRS and BJP are spreading false propaganda that industries were moving out of the state,' he lamented. The minister briefed the representatives on the new investments the state attracted and explained the measures being taken to promote industrial development. Telangana Minimum Wages Advisory Board chairman B Janak Prasad, IT & Industries Special Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar and Labour department principal secretary Dana Kishore were present on the occasion.

Nissan Magnite scores five-star safety rating in Global NCAP tests

The India-manufactured Nissan Magnite has achieved a five-star rating for adult occupant protection and a three-star rating for child occupant protection in the latest Global NCAP crash tests, marking a significant improvement in its safety credentials. This makes the Magnite the first car on sale in South Africa to receive a five-star rating under Global NCAP's updated crash test protocols. Richard Woods, CEO of Global NCAP, said, 'The five-star rating is relevant to consumers in South Africa and India and it demonstrates what can be achieved in a relatively short period of time when a manufacturer is fully committed to engage in the NCAP process.' Safety ratings Initially launched with only two airbags and minimal safety features, the early version of the Magnite had secured just two stars for both adult and child occupant protection. In a bid to improve its safety profile, Nissan introduced a series of enhancements including six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), pedestrian protection upgrades, and improved seat belt and restraint systems. These changes led to a four-star rating in a voluntary test round. Not stopping there, Nissan further upgraded the model and submitted it for another round of voluntary testing, which culminated in the latest five-star result. The upgraded Magnite is now on sale in both India and South Africa. Bobby Ramagwede, CEO of the Automobile Association of South Africa, added, 'The association is very happy that Nissan South Africa's best-selling passenger vehicle has attained the much sought after Global NCAP five-star rating and that Nissan has taken the safety of their South African customers to heart with the facelifted Magnite.' Global NCAP's protocols assess frontal and side impact protection, electronic stability control, pedestrian protection and side pole impact performance — all of which are required to attain the highest safety ratings.
