Egypt's SODIC Water Polo Team Makes History with Double Victory at Global Youth Tournament in Italy - Omni sports
The team clinched first place in both the 2014 and 2016 birth-year categories at the tournament, widely regarded as the youth World Cup of water polo, which featured over 60 teams from around the world.
This dual victory marks a historic milestone: since the tournament's inception in 2008, no team had ever claimed both age categories in the same year. Several European sports outlets highlighted the achievement as a sign of Egypt's rising influence in international youth water polo and a testament to the country's strategic investment in grassroots sports.
Minister Sobhy noted that the victory reflects not only the talent and commitment of Egyptian athletes but also Egypt's growing stature on the global sports stage. He praised the players and coaching staff for their outstanding performance, underscoring the success of national sports development programs.
This latest triumph builds on SODIC's earlier achievements this year, including victories in the Haba Waba tournaments held in Spain for the 2013 and 2015 age groups. In 2023, the club's 2013 team also secured the title at the Italian edition, demonstrating consistent excellence across multiple age brackets and international events.
The delegation was led by Captain Hesham Saif, with Ahmed Adel serving as head coach. The technical team also included Abdel Rahman Fawzy, Mostafa Gamal, Mohamed Abou Gabal, Mohamed El Afandy, and Mohamed Bakhit.
Their leadership and structured training methods played a crucial role in preparing the young athletes both physically and mentally to compete at the highest level. SODIC's continued dominance in the Haba Waba Championships underscores the value of long-term sports planning, international exposure, and strong institutional support for youth development.
As Egypt solidifies its standing in the global water polo arena, such victories serve as a source of national pride and a powerful inspiration for future generations of athletes.

Mohamed Salah shares heartfelt tribute to Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota after tragic death - Talents Abroad
Liverpool star Mohamed Salah expressed deep sorrow on Friday over the death of teammate Diogo Jota, posting an emotional tribute on social media. The 33-year-old Egyptian forward admitted to being 'truly lost for words' following the car accident that claimed Jota's life in Spain on Thursday. Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Felipe, 26, died when their Lamborghini veered off a highway near Zamora after a tyre blowout, the Spanish Civil Guard reported. Salah, quoting his tweet, said, "I am truly lost for words," and added, "Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break." He also expressed, "It's going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won't be there when we go back," while extending condolences: "My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children." Salah, currently on a break, is expected to return to Liverpool this weekend, along with other teammates, as the club deals with the loss. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot described the incident as "devastating," while former manager Jürgen Klopp praised Jota's character. The club has not confirmed changes to its pre-season schedule, set for 8 July, though fans gathered outside Anfield to mourn. The Spanish Civil Guard continues to investigate the accident. Tennis: Osaka blows chance to reach Wimbledon fourth round - Omni sports
Naomi Osaka blew a golden opportunity to reach the Wimbledon fourth round for the first time as the Japanese star was beaten by Russian world number 50 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Friday. Osaka was in a strong position after taking the first set on Court Two, but her bid to finally make the last 16 imploded as Pavlyuchenkova battled back to clinch a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory. The 27-year-old is a four-time Grand Slam champion, but she has not won a major since 2021. Osaka's four previous appearances at Wimbledon ended in two third-round defeats and losses in the first and second round. Once again she fell short at the grass-court Grand Slam. Since her triumph at the Australian Open four years ago, she is on a dismal run of 12 successive Grand Slam appearances without reaching the fourth round. Osaka, 27, gave birth to a daughter in July 2023, returning from a 15-month sabbatical for the start of the 2024 season. The former world number one, now down to 53rd in the WTA rankings, has always struggled on grass. Earlier this week, Osaka admitted she had feared playing on the surface for much of her career. "I don't know, with age fear kind of crept along and, I guess, paralysed me in a way," she said. "Now I'm kind of just getting over that and trying to spread my wings on grass." Osaka's wings were clipped by Pavlyuchenkova in a rollercoaster clash. The Japanese star quickly raced into a 4-1 lead and clinched the first set with an ace. Pavlyuchenkova levelled the match with a blistering forehand on set point in the second set. Osaka left the court to compose herself before the final set, but she was broken in the second game and fell 3-0 down. Faced with elimination, Osaka battled back, winning three consecutive games, only to crumble as Pavlyuchenkova pounced when the pressure mounted. "I felt like I was behind for the majority of the match, so I played point-by-point. I'm incredibly happy because I was mentally tough in the three matches that I have won," said the Russian. "I'm usually not so good on grass. The majority of you were cheering for Naomi today but it's OK. As I said, I'm mentally tough." Zamalek legend Shikabala announces retirement - Egyptian Football
Zamalek's iconic skipper and fan favourite, Mahmoud 'Shikabala' Abdel-Razek, announced on Thursday his retirement from professional football, marking the end of a legendary two-decade career that cemented his status as one of Egypt's most celebrated players. The 39-year-old star, known for his exceptional skills and contributions to Egyptian football, made the announcement in a video posted on his official Facebook account, stating, "The journey has ended, and another will begin from the stands," as he bid farewell to Zamalek's supporters, known as the "White Knights." Shikabala explained that he had already made up his mind about retirement. "I previously said that the current season would be my last, and I feel that I have given everything. The journey has ended, and Zamalek fans are happy because I can no longer give more," he said in an interview with MBC Masr 2. He clarified that there were no discussions with Zamalek officials regarding the continuation of his career, despite having a contract for an additional season. "My journey with Zamalek fans will not end despite retirement," he said. He revealed that former Zamalek player Ahmed Hossam Mido tried to convince him to reverse his retirement decision. "I told him that I made this decision a year ago, and although there was pressure, I see that this is the right time to decide what I will do," Shikabala added, stressing that his decision is final and that he is looking forward to his new journey from the stands. Shikabala's decision to hang up his boots marks the conclusion of a remarkable career that spanned over two decades, during which he became one of the most decorated players in Zamalek's history, securing 18 titles, including four Egyptian Premier League championships and five Egypt Cups. His last competitive match was a triumphant victory in the Egypt Cup final against Pyramids FC in June 2025, where he played a pivotal role in leading his team to glory. Shikabala began his career with Zamalek in 1996 after joining from Aswan Youth and was promoted to the first team in 2002. He had a stint with Greek club PAOK before returning to Zamalek in 2006. After that, he went out on loan to Emirati club Al-Wasl and later played professionally for Sporting Lisbon in Portugal. He then returned to Zamalek and was loaned out to Ismaily, Al-Raed in Saudi Arabia, and Apollon in Greece. Since 2019, he has continued to play for Zamalek, leading them to win the 2025 Egypt Cup title against Pyramids with a decisive penalty kick. The Zamalek captain played 396 matches for the team, scoring 70 goals and ranking eighth in Zamalek's historical list of top scorers. He also provided 89 assists during his career. Zamalek have announced plans to honour Shikabala with a special tribute match, details of which will be announced in due course. The club expressed their gratitude for his service and wished him well in his future endeavours.
