Michigan State hockey loses top player in college hockey in an NHL trade

USA Today09-07-2025
This past season, Michigan State hockey had the top player in all of college hockey, Isaac Howard, who won the Hobey Baker award for what many thought would be one last ride. After a trade on Wednesday between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Edmonton Oilers, Howard will be leaving East Lansing after all.
It was a fairly shocking surprise when Howard announced he would return to the Spartans for one more year back in April. At the time, there was some friction between Howard and Tampa Bay, who had drafted him in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft, and Howard cited a 'philosophical divide' between him and the Lightning as a major reason he would return to MSU.
Now, Howard is in Edmonton, and he signed a three-year contract to start his professional career with the Oilers. While this marks the end for Isaac Howard with MSU, Spartan hockey fans can at least be consoled by the fact that Trey Augustine, one of the best goaltenders in college hockey, will be delaying his pro career and staying with MSU for one more year.

Former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard discusses last six months while at ESPYs

To say that it's been a memorable and eventful last six months for former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard would be an understatement. Not only did he realize a couple of childhood dreams by winning a College Football Playoff national championship and by being selected in the NFL draft, but he also appeared on the red carpet at the ESPYs because the Buckeyes were nominated for "Team of the Year." And while OSU didn't win that award, he still got to rub elbows with American sports' royalty and experience all that comes from being a part of the festivities. One other thing Howard has been able to do is learn from future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers after he was signed to lead the Steelers this coming year. Howard -- all decked out in his best -- took some time while at the ESPYs to talk about those things and more while on the red carpet ahead of sitting in the audience in person to watch the annual sports awards show. As he always is, Howard was gracious and engaging in talking about a six-month whirlwind that will undoubtedly be unlike any other in his life. He reflected on his transfer to Ohio State, making a run to the national championship, and what it means to be mentored by Rodgers. You can catch all of his comments below, thanks to the ESPN College Football "X" account. It's unlikely that Howard will get much time under center in Pittsburgh this season, but as Rodgers moves on, if he can learn and make the most of the opportunity he has, maybe we can see him doing some of the same things he did for Ohio State for the Steelers in the near future. I wouldn't bet against him at this point. Contact/Follow us @BuckeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Ohio State news, notes and opinion. MSU target, PG Carlos Medlock Jr. is becoming one of fastest risers on recruiting trail

A prospect Michigan State basketball identified early in the recruiting process is becoming one of the fastest risers this summer. Carlos Medlock Jr. of Branson, Mo. picked up an offer from the Spartans in mid-June and has quickly risen up the recruiting boards with strong summer play on the circuits. Medlock -- who is originally from Michigan but recently transferred to Link Academy in Missouri -- shot up the recruiting rankings recently, now sitting as a four-star prospect. When Michigan State offered him last month, Medlock was a three-star prospect. Medlock now ranks as the No. 9 point guard and No. 104 player in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2026 class. For some perspective, on June 16 when he picked up his Spartans offer, he ranked as the No. 26 point guard in the class. Michigan State was Medlock's first power conference offer, with Michigan and Oklahoma State following the Spartans' suit since then, per 247Sports. It should come as no surprise that Tom Izzo and his staff was able to identify a top talent before others did, and hopefully that will give Michigan State an edge in this now heated battle for a premier talent in the 2026 class. Michigan State is one of a few Big Ten schools with top 25 QB commitment in 2026 class

Michigan State is one of only a few Big Ten teams that currently holds a commitment from a top 25 quarterback prospect in the 2026 class. All of the Rivals' top 25 quarterback prospects in the 2026 class are now committed, and Michigan State is fortunate enough to have one of the commits in Kayd Coffman. He ranks as the No. 23 quarterback in the Rivals Industry Rankings for the 2026 class, which is fifth among Big Ten commitments in the position. Coffman has been committed to Michigan State since early February and ranks as one of the top commitments in the Spartans' 2026 class. On rivals, he is listed as a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 6 player from Michigan and No. 237 overall prospect in the class. Coffman has long been considered a centerpiece of the Spartans' 2026 class so it's no surprise to see him among the top 25 quarterbacks in the class. Should Michigan State hold onto his commitment throughout this fall and sign him in December, he will surely be a big part of the Spartans' future on the gridiron.
