The Banished review – cultish terrors lurk in the Australian outback

The Guardian4 days ago
Weirdos in animal masks, summary executions, rituals that envelop you in a strange sense of predestination; thanks to the folk-horror crowd, you can't go for a country walk these days without expecting to stumble into some uncanny pagan savagery. This Australian thriller subscribes unquestioningly to all of the above tropes, but its delicately splintered narrative and feel for outback disorientation and dismay mark out a distinctive trail – until it disintegrates to the point the film can only turn in circles.
Prodigal city girl Grace (Meg Eloise-Clarke) comes back to her home town in the bush to search for her missing brother David (Gautier de Fontaine), who saved her from their abusive father. Nosing around this depressing outpost, she hears rumours of a mysterious commune out in the wilderness drawing in local vagrants and drifters. Her uncle (Tony Hughes) warns her off investigating – but of course she ignores him, as well as the pile of keepsakes hinting at her family's long involvement in cultist shenanigans. So she slings a few grand to her shady former geography teacher Mr Green (Leighton Cardno) to escort her out into the scrub.
Intercutting Grace's forlorn interrogations with her panicky isolation in the countryside, director Joseph Sims-Dennett initially has one narrative chase another's tail; they dovetail into a first half whose general oppressiveness grinds us down, while the fragmentation prickles us into alertness. It's heightened by a sharp and impatient visual sense keen to root out grim outback picturesque as well as broken bones and toxic microbes inside Grace's beleaguered body, and meting out action in abbreviated, comic-book-style beats.
Once Grace makes first contact, and comes back once more within the family embrace, the film tries to go full-on phantasmagoric. But the highly allusive storytelling style ultimately leaves insufficient meaning at the core of this quasi-psychedelic breakdown and too much generic pagan cavorting and leering. Even so, it's a credible enough attempt at launching an Aussie branch of the global folk-horror brotherhood.
The Banished is on digital platforms from 28 July.

Bachelorette star Lee Elliott seen moving out of marital home he shared with ex Georgia Love - as he's seen gathering belongings after split

Lee Elliott was all business on Saturday as he moved out of the Melbourne home he once shared with ex Georgia Love. The couple, who fell in love on the 2016 season of The Bachelorette, announced their split in May following months of speculation. But things were made official over the weekend as Lee, 43, arrived at their marital home in his work ute while wearing moving clothes. Rugging up against a chilly Melbourne morning, Lee wore a navy-blue hooded jacket over a similarly coloured T-shirt. He also wore a pair of mauve shorts and sensible white sneakers with matching socks. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. While Georgia, 35, was nowhere to be seen, Lee wasn't taking on the task solo, with a large moving van seen in the driveway. Lee was spotted carrying armfuls of collared shirts and jackets, still on their hangers, to his car. While Lee appeared in a relatively chipper mood as he gathered his belongings, it seems he became emotional at one point. He was seen accepting a consoling embrace from a pal who had shown up to help the former reality star move. It's certainly the end of an era, with the former couple's four-bedroom home in Hampton East going under the hammer in June. Their property passed in at $1.53 million after being listed with $1.5 million to $1.58 million price expectations. However, post-auction negotiations ended with the sale of the home for an undisclosed amount. Lee and Georgia, who first met on the 2016 season of The Bachelorette, announced their separation with identical posts to Instagram in May. While Georgia was nowhere to be seen, Lee wasn't taking on the task solo, with a large moving van seen in the driveway 'After nine wonderful years together, including four as husband and wife, [we] have made the incredibly difficult decision to lovingly part ways,' they wrote. 'Our relationship has been so special, and we will always cherish the memories, love, and laughter we've shared. 'There is no drama, no bad blood. Just two people who have grown in different directions while still holding deep respect and care for each other. 'We remain friends, and we'd really appreciate our privacy as we navigate this next stage. Thank you.'

John Farnham's son James shares adorable first photos of his first child with partner Tessa Effendi

James Farnham has shared the first adorable images of his newborn son, Jett. The son of iconic singer John Farnham welcomed his first child with partner Dr Tessa Effendi in June. Taking to Instagram on Friday, James shared a series of adorable photos of the precious newborn dressed in an array of cute costumes. In a nod to Jett's musical lineage, one photo showed the bub fast asleep, wearing headphones in front of a toy piano, ukulele and miniature Marshall amplifier. Another black and white photo showed Jett's tiny feet being lovingly cupped by mum and dad's hands. Jett looked cute as a button in subsequent shots, dressed as a dinosaur, a snake, and swaddled snugly in a small wicker basket as a bear. Captioning the images, James shared a gushing tribute to Tessa's strength and bravery. 'Our Beautiful Baby Boy, Jett. Born 18th June 2025 at 5:26pm,' he wrote. 'Tessa, I can't thank you enough for bringing the most beautiful boy into the world. Thank you for giving your body, your mind, and your heart to start our little family. 'I thought I understood love—but watching you go through labour and bring our son into the world took that love and admiration to a whole new level. 'You are unbelievably strong, incredibly brave and already the most amazing mother. You mean the world to both me and Jett.' James rounded out the post by thanking Tessa's doctor and midwife for making the experience as smooth as possible. 'Your experience and calm meant we had the birth we hoped for, with minimal intervention and every decision made with Tessa's comfort and clarity in mind,' he added. Jett looked cute as a button in subsequent shots, dressed as a dinosaur, a snake, and swaddled snugly in a small wicker basket as a bear 'Things could've gone very differently, and we'll forever be grateful.' The post was met with a flurry of congratulations from friends and followers. 'These words from a partner/dad would be amazing for a wife/mum to hear,' one offered. 'Loved hearing your admiration for her strength in labour. You are blessed to find one another in this life.' Another chimed in with a similar: 'Oh, Jett is just divine! Congratulations to James and Tessa on this little bundle of pure joy.' Another offered: 'Jett is Gorgeous. Congratulations to you both, thank you for sharing these moments with us.' Summing up the sentiment of many, a fourth added: So adorable, a little ray of sunshine to add to your amazing family.' James revealed, in a statement shared to Instagram earlier this month, that his bundle of joy arrived earlier than expected on June 18 at St Vincent's Private Hospital in Melbourne. 'We thought we were excited to meet him—but turns out he was even more excited to meet us, arriving a little ahead of schedule,' they wrote. Jett John Farnham—whose middle name is a touching tribute to James' dad—weighed in at 3.176kg, with new parents James and Tessa revealing they were both 'smitten' and 'sleep-deprived'—and wouldn't change it for the world. James has been in a relationship with Tessa, who is a registered Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, for several years. Jett is the first grandchild for the legendary You're the Voice singer, whose eldest son Robert married his long-term girlfriend Melissa Kelly in 2024.

Bec Judd reveals how she cheated death is SHOCKING incident with husband Chris: 'This is where it ends'

Rebecca 'Bec' Judd has revealed the terrifying moment she narrowly escaped amid a harrowing mid-air incident. The AFL WAG, 42, recounted the shocking tale during an interview with SAFM's Bernie & Emma G with Bel Sloane show on Friday. Bec said she and husband Chris, 41, went on an adventurous date early on in their relationship, when tragedy struck and she found herself plummeting through the sky. 'We secretly went and did a skydive together in Perth when he was playing for West Coast and my parachute didn't open,' she told hosts Bernie Vince and Bel Sloane. Bec said that while Chris' jump went off without a hitch, the mother-of-four almost saw her life flash before her eyes when things went horribly wrong on her jump. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Juddy jumped out, felt the parachute and he's all good. So, we're strapped to someone, I jump out, we're falling through the sky,' she said. 'My tandem guy pulled the parachute—the parachute opened and tore off. It ripped off and went flying through the sky, and we started falling to the ground again.' She said Chris witnessed the shocking scene unfold, convinced it would end badly. 'Chris is watching, and we'd only been dating for a couple of months, and his tandem guy who he was strapped to went, "Oh, there goes your friend,"' she recounted. 'And we started dropping to the ground, and he went, "This is where it ends."' Bec said it was her skydiving partner's quick thinking that ultimately saved her life. 'Luckily, just before we got to the ground, he found the little emergency parachute—a dinky little kind of BS emergency parachute opened and saved us,' Bec explained. 'We landed pretty quickly after that.' 'So, my free fall, you know, that's all you get, 60 seconds of free fall—I pretty much free fell almost all the way to the ground,' she continued. Bec went on to say Chris told her he watched as she plummeted to the ground, with the WAG adding she landed long before her partner. 'Chris just said he just saw us just go boom, all the way down. I jumped after him, but I think I ended up landing about five minutes before him,' she said. 'Thank God the emergency parachute worked.' Luckily, the crisis was averted and Bec went on to tie the knot with Chris in a lavish Melbourne ceremony on New Year's Eve in 2010. They now share four children—Oscar, 13, Billie, 10, and twins Darcy and Tom, eight.
