Even after rising 72% this past week, BIT Mining (NYSE:BTCM) shareholders are still down 88% over the past five years
It is a pleasure to report that the BIT Mining Limited (NYSE:BTCM) is up 188% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been stomach churning. Five years have seen the share price descend precipitously, down a full 88%. While the recent increase might be a green shoot, we're certainly hesitant to rejoice. The important question is if the business itself justifies a higher share price in the long term. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway. On a more encouraging note the company has added US$26m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. Given that BIT Mining didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth. In the last five years BIT Mining saw its revenue shrink by 7.3% per year. While far from catastrophic that is not good. The share price fall of 13% (per year, over five years) is a stern reminder that money-losing companies are expected to grow revenue. It takes a certain kind of mental fortitude (or recklessness) to buy shares in a company that loses money and doesn't grow revenue. Fear of becoming a 'bagholder' may be keeping people away from this stock. The image below shows how earnings and revenue have tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail). Take a more thorough look at BIT Mining's financial health with this free report on its balance sheet. It's nice to see that BIT Mining shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 34% over the last year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 13% per year over five years. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 5 warning signs for BIT Mining (3 are significant!) that you should be aware of before investing here. But note: BIT Mining may not be the best stock to buy. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies with past earnings growth (and further growth forecast).
