BBC News10-05-2025
Canada's two-time Olympian Gabriela DeBues-Stafford produced an outstanding performance at the Belfast Irish Milers Meet to win the women's 3,000m race in a time of 8:39.35.DeBues-Stafford finished fifth in the 1500m final at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and holds six Canadian national outdoor and indoor records over distances ranging from 1500m to 5000m.The 29-year-old was paced through the first 800m but then had to run on her own the rest of the way and looked full of energy in the closing stages as she opened a gap of almost 200 metres on the battle for second place.Limerick athlete Ide Nic Dhomhnaill finished second in 9:12.63 after a close battle with Cork's Fiona Everand (9:13.38) at the Mary Peters Track. DeBues-Stafford will now set her sights on making her third World Championships in Tokyo later this year hoping to better her finish of sixth in the 2019 1500m final in Doha.
The Belfast Irish Milers Meet is regarded as one of the best in Ireland but many of the regular visitors to the annual event were missing this year because of the clash with the World Relays in China. However, among the other notable performances, Cork's Darragh McElhinney won the men's 1500m in 3:37.86 which was just 0.14 outside of his personal best. Two-time Irish indoor champion, Katie Bergin, took the women's 200m in 24.35 while Sale Harriers runner Tess McHugh set a new personal best of 52.62 in winning the women's 400m.
Ireland qualify for world mixed relay final
A brilliant final leg from Sharlene Mawdsley helped Ireland qualify for the World Championships in Tokyo in August in the 4x400m mixed relay. With two places available in the heats at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, the Irish quartet of Conor Kelly, Rhasidat Adeleke, Cillin Greene and Mawdsley finished second behind the USA.Ireland, who took the bronze medal at these championships a year ago, were also the fourth fastest qualifiers for Sunday's final. The race quickly turned into a battle between the USA, Poland and Ireland with Kelly, Adeleke and Greene putting Mawdsley in a position to challenge for second place. In the home straight she passed the experienced Polish runner Justyna Swiety-Ersetic and comfortably held on to claim second behind the United States.Bangor's Rachel McCann ran the third leg for Ireland in the women's 4x400m relay heats. Along with Sophie Becker, Lauren Cadden and Phil Healy, the Irish were third behind South Africa and Germany.Callum Baird from Antrim was the second leg runner for an Irish men's 4x400m quartet that also included Chris O'Donnell, Marcus Lawler and Jack Raftery. They were sixth and last in their heat. Both 4x400m squads will get a second opportunity to qualify for the World Championships on Sunday.

Conor McGregor shows off bizarre new hair after whisking fiancee Dee Devlin away amid UFC star's kiss with mystery woman

CONOR McGREGOR has blown fans away by revealing his bizarre new mohawk hairdo while on holiday. The UFC star is currently away with his fiancee Dee Devlin and their four children amid a cloud of recent controversies. 8 8 8 8 But the Irishman appears unbothered as he took to Instagram to reveal his shock new hair - shaved sides with a mohawk down the middle. He paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne - who this week passed away aged 76 - by blasting out Black Sabbath's War Pigs. McGregor, 37, captioned the post: "WAR PIG 1. FIRST BLOOD DRAWN OZZY OZ FOREVER, RIP!" And fans compared him to UFC great Chuck Liddell after showing off his new mohawk. Another added: "That's Chuck." A third joked: "Bruh it's over we in the Mohawk McGregor era." McGregor recently whisked his partner away to Sardinia to celebrate his birthday despite a cloud of controversy surrounding him. The Sun first reported how the multimillionaire fighter was caught appearing to kiss a mystery woman on a beach in Florida. Just days later, McGregor was spotted with the same woman enjoying a meal in Fort Lauderdale. To make matters worse, American rapper Azealia Banks accused McGregor of sending her unsolicited nude photos. The alleged naked pictures were then posted online - and later deleted - by the New York performer. Just days later, McGregor was snapped packing on the PDA with Dee -who he proposed to in 2020 but is yet to marry - on a yacht in Italy. And she posted: "Happy Birthday to the person who always keeps Dee entertained and makes her smile." McGregor has not fought since July 2021 - when he brutally broke his leg against Dustin Poirier. A toe injury last June also forced McGregor out of his proposed comeback bout against Michael Chandler in Las Vegas. But McGregor has recently claimed he is back in the UFC's drug testing pool in a bid to set up a return. It's been controversies outside of the cage that have kept the former champion from fighting - with his UFC future in doubt. In December, McGregor was found liable for assault in a civil case against him dating back to 2018. 8 8 The court heard how the professional fighter was said to have "brutally raped and battered" Nikita Hand in a penthouse at the Beacon Hotel. McGregor - who was ordered to pay Ms Hand about £206,000 in damages and pay her legal costs - has since sought an appeal. McGregor also punched a man in an Ibiza nightclub in June - with The Sun capturing the shocking moment. But the man - who works for Wayne Lineker - did not press charges. While away with his fiancee and four kids - Conor Jr, eight, Croia, six, Rian four and Mack, one - McGregor's pub was the target of an arson attack. Detectives believe a person doused the Black Forge Inn with a "flammable liquid" at 3am. It's understood the suspect used a flammable liquid at the front of the premises before setting it on fire and then fleeing the scene. Gardai are examining CCTV from the area in a bid to identify the suspect. It's the second time McGregor's pub has been targeted in an arson attack. In 2022, a petrol bomb was thrown at the bar but it failed to ignite. Following that incident, McGregor also installed bullet proof windows in the pub. 8 8

Swimming worlds: Summer McIntosh wins 200 IM for second gold in as many days

Two days. Two gold medals. Summer McIntosh is off to a perfect start at the swimming world championships in her attempt to win five individual gold medals, a feat only achieved by American legend Michael Phelps. The 18-year-old Canadian took the 200-meter individual medley on Monday, clocking 2:06.69. The victory matched the gold she won Sunday in the 400 freestyle. Alex Walsh of the United States claimed the silver in 2:08.58 with bronze going to Mary-Sophie Harvey of Canada in 2:09.15. The winning time trailed McIntosh's world record of 2:05.70. And she was not content. 'Going in tonight, my goal was to get my hand on the wall first,' McIntosh said. 'So to get that done is good. I'm not super happy with my time. But honestly, at a world championships, my goal is just to go as fast as I can against my competitors. Still happy with the gold and hoping to keep up my streak next time.' Yu Zidi, a Chinese 12-year-old, finished fourth in 2:09.21, just missing a medal as she astounds the swim world with her times. She is also due to compete in the 400 IM and 200 butterfly, probably her strongest events. McIntosh will chase three more golds in the 400 IM, 800 free and the 200 butterfly over the next six days in Singapore. Gretchen Walsh broke through on Monday with the first gold in Singapore for the United States, taking the 100 butterfly in 54.73. The silver medalist a year ago in Paris, Walsh was just off her world-record time of 54.60 set earlier this year. Roos Vanotterdijk of Belgium took silver in 55.84 and Alexandria Perkins of Australia claimed bronze in 56.33. Walsh acknowledged in a post-race interview at poolside that the American team had been hit with a bout of what team officials called 'acute gastroenteritis.' It was picked up at a training camp in Thailand prior to arrival in Singapore. U.S. officials have confirmed the outbreak but have given few details and did not name swimmer nor say how many were affected. 'With the illness that's been going on – I faced it back the last couple days – my body has just been fragile, and I think that I've needed to give myself grace,' Walsh said. 'Luckily, I had the morning to recover and rest, and I used that, and that helped me enormously going into tonight, so I tried to make the most of it. 'It was not easy, and I'm just really proud of myself,' Walsh added, thrilled to be under 55 seconds. 'It took a lot of guts. I just wanted to go out there and do it for my team, just represent the flag well. It came out of somewhere, but I'm really, really happy.' Walsh's older sister Alex was almost even with McIntosh after 150 meters, swimming a strong breaststroke leg to make it a race. 'I was really excited on the breaststroke leg,' she said. 'I could see her and I knew I was kind of gaining on her because breaststroke is my best stroke. I was really excited and, obviously coming home on the freestyle, that's definitely where my biggest weakness (is).' Two other finals wrapped up Monday's schedule. Qin Haiyang, the world champion in 2023, defeated Paris Olympic winner Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy in the 100 breaststroke. Qin clocked 58.23 to give China its first gold in Singapore with the Italian swimmer finishing in 58.58. Denis Petrashov of Kyrgyzstan took bronze in 58.88. 'I've been injured and it's not been easy to get back to my best,' Haiyang said. 'I'm at best at 70%. I'm probably lucky. This definitely helps with my confidence.' In the men's 50 butterfly, Maxime Grousset of France edged Noe Ponti of Switzerland. Grousset clocked 22.48 with Ponti finishing in 22.51. Thomas Ceccon of Italy took bronze in 22.67. In the four semi-finals, Paris Olympics bronze medalist Luke Hobson of the United States led 200 free qualifying (1:44.80), with Paris champion David Popovici of Romania in fourth (1:45.02). Hubert Kós of Hungary headed a very fast men's 100 backstroke in 52.21. American Regan Smith led the women's 100 backstroke (58.21) ahead of two-time Australian Olympic champion Kaylee McKeown (58.44). Kate Douglass of the United States swam a personal best in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.49) and will be the top seed in Tuesday's final.
