Ludhiana: Inspections across the city, health dept says zero-tolerance for adulteration
'All 47 samples have been sent to the state food testing laboratory, and action will be taken strictly as per the results,' said Amarjit Kaur, district health officer.
The health department has issued a stern warning to wholesalers and retailers, urging them to refrain from stocking or selling banned and substandard food items. Public cooperation is also being sought to report any suspected adulteration or sale of prohibited items in their localities.
'This is a zero-tolerance issue. Ensuring food safety is not just a legal obligation but a moral one,' Kaur emphasised. 'Such inspections will continue on a regular basis to protect consumers from adulterated and harmful products.'
Earlier, on April 26, 2025, the health team had conducted a targeted inspection during which 14 bags of Kesari Dal, each weighing 30 kg (total 420 kg) were seized. The test results, which were reported by the department on Wednesday, state that the samples have been found to be non-compliant with food safety standards..
Kesari Dal (Lathyrus sativus) is prohibited for sale and consumption in India under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, due to its possible neurotoxic effects which can lead to lathyrism, a serious neurological disorder.
The department has said that a legal action is being initiated as per the provisions of the FSSAI Act.
'Selling Kesari Dal is a punishable offence under Sections 59 and 63 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and we are committed to taking strict action against offenders endangering public health,' said Amarjit Kaur.

Uttarakhand Makes It Mandatory For Eateries On Kanwar Yatra Route To Display Food Licenses

Ahead of the Kanwar Yatra, the Uttarakhand government has mandated for all the eateries and food businesses along the yatra route to prominently display their food licences or registration certificates. CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the move was to enforce a 'stringent and dedicated action plan to ensure that devotees receive hygienic and safe food". Owners of hotels, dhabas, food carts and stalls along the pilgrimage route will have to display a clean copy of their license or registration certificate prominently so that consumers can easily see it, Health Secretary and Commissioner Food Safety and Drug Administration R Rajesh Kumar said. 'Food Safety Display Board' should also be installed in hotels, eateries, dhabas and restaurants at a clearly visible place, so that the customer can know who is responsible for the quality of food. The certificates include the name, photo and other details of the holder. An official communication added, 'Uttarakhand govt urges all religious institutions and vendors to respect devotees' faith by serving safe, pure and quality food. The aim is to balance faith and health on this sacred journey." The yatra is scheduled to start on July 11. In 2024 also, after the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments had mandated that vendors must display their nameplates outside their shops, however, the Supreme Court intervened and stayed the move. The apex court noted that there was no government order empowering the police to give directions in this case. In its order, the court observed that such directions could be issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 or the Street Vendors Act, 2014, to ensure 'shudh shakahari" (strictly vegetarian) food is served to the Kanwar Yatris. Health Secretary Dr R Rajesh Kumar told the media that the licence needs to be exhibited prominently. 'The photograph and the application with which the vendor applied for the licence is to be pasted outside. There should be no confusion over the issue. We have not asked eatery owners to display their names," he said as quoted by the The Indian Express. The health department has formed a strict action plan to ensure safe and pure food through extensive monitoring. Kumar said all food businesses along the route have been given essential instructions that must be followed. 'There will be no compromise on food quality at tents, food centres and other locations during the yatra. Immediate legal action will be taken against those involved in adulteration or standard violations. Pilgrims' health is our top priority," he said. Special teams of food safety officers have been deployed in Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri and Uttarkashi districts who will regularly collect samples of milk, sweets, oil, spices and beverages, etc. from the pandals and send them to laboratories for testing. Uttarakhand's diktat for eateries on Kanwar Yatra route: Display licence, registration or face closure
Ahead of the Kanwar Yatra, the Uttarakhand government has mandated that food vendors display their licence or registration certificates for shops on the yatra route. The Chief Minister's Office said that shops without this display would be shut down. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Health Minister Dhan Singh Rawat on Tuesday announced that the move was to enforce a 'stringent and dedicated action plan to ensure that lakhs of devotees receive clean and safe food'. The government will also launch an extensive surveillance campaign to monitor food safety, the communication said. Secretary of Health and Commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Administration, Dr R Rajesh Kumar, said that all hotels, dhabas, food stalls, and vendors along the yatra route have been issued mandatory guidelines. 'Every food vendor must prominently display a clean copy of their licence or registration certificate on their premises for consumers to see. Small vendors and hawkers must also carry and display a photo identity card and registration certificate. Hotels, eateries, dhabas, and restaurants must install a clearly visible 'Food Safety Display Board' so that customers know who is responsible for food quality,' said a government statement. Those failing to comply will face action under section 55 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which includes a fine of up to Rs 2 lakh. The yatra is scheduled to start on July 11. In such a case, law and order are of utmost importance, and the Food Department is taking the relevant measures,' he said. Submit report on food security by July 30: HC to Centre, Raj
1 2 Jaipur: Taking suo motu cognisance of the poor implementation of National Food Security Act and the Food Safety and Standards Act , a single judge bench of the Rajasthan High Court issued notices to several ministries and state govt officials. The court asked the officers of the central and state govt to submit a report by July 30 and explain what action was taken by them in the matter. Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand said, "The implementation of the National Food Security Act and the Food Safety and Standards Act is very poor.
