One travel expert on how to plan the perfect trip to Japan

Japan is a country of contrasts. From ancient temples steeped in centuries of legends, to modern vending machines dropping everything from hot corn soup to the delights of yakitori in a can, this country of calm chaos is one of the safest and easiest countries to travel around. While many of us carry postcards in our minds of iconic snapshots of Tokyo's neon lights, snowcapped Mount Fuji or Kyoto's geishas gliding past wooden teahouses, Japan offers a layered tapestry that blends tradition with innovation. Whether you're planning to check that dream cherry blossom trip off your bucket list, taking the road less travelled during shoulder season, or exploring the countryside to savour cups of tea with monks, Japan is home to experiences unlike anywhere else. Image: Andrew Marty With a variety of flight options from the UAE, Japan is accessible, and once there, it is very easy to navigate around for groups, families or solo adventure seekers. The Japan Rail Pass is essential when travelling between cities and must be purchased before arriving in Japan. This pass allows you hop on and off most Japan Rail trains, including the Shinkansen (bullet train), allowing you to go from seeing the green blur of rice paddies through passing train windows, to the popular swirl of a cup of matcha being whisked in one of the back alleys of Tokyo – hassle free and in the blink of an eye. Image: Andrew Marty Japan thrives on contradictions – it's a country that is incredibly progressive and modern, while remaining fiercely traditional, frenetic and serene. Taking in the must-see sights, particularly on a first-time visit, will feed an Instagram fuelled appetite, but don't be afraid to step off the regular tourist path – spend a night in a capsule hotel, belt out karaoke until the early hours of the morning, taste the strangest items on the menu, and learn to love a convenience food store (trust me, they are life-changing)! Image: Andrew Marty One word of advice on any trip to Japan, is to not rush. Embrace the quirks and lean into the whispers of locals, wander through the quirky villages, and if you stay here long enough or surrender to the current that will inevitably draw you back, you'll notice the choreography in the rituals of the tea ceremony that match the falling drops on a commuters umbrella on a rainy morning. Every corner of the country offers unique theatre, and you will find yourself with a front row seat. Paris unveils mural of Josephine Baker to honour her legacy

Paris is reviving the spirit of U.S.-French entertainer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker with a new mural. Fifty years after her death, Baker now gazes out over a diverse neighborhood of northeast Paris, thanks to urban artist FKDL and a street art festival aimed at promoting community spirit. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker became a megastar in the 1930s, especially in France, where she moved in 1925 as she sought to flee racism and segregation in the United States. In addition to her stage fame, Baker also spied on the Nazis for the French Resistance and marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr. in Washington. She died in Paris in 1975. ''I feel moved and I feel happy, because this is part of a memory of my mother," her son Brian Baker told the Associated Press at the unveiling of the mural Saturday. He was one of 12 children Josephine Baker adopted from around the world that she called her ″rainbow tribe″ and what her son called ''a little United Nations.″ The mural of Baker, meant to symbolize freedom and resistance, is among several painted in recent days in the neighborhood and organized by the association Paris Colors Ourq. The artist FKDL said he focuses on ''bringing women back into the urban landscape." Brian Baker, son of US-French entertainer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker, stands in front of a new mural of his mother painted by artist Franck Duval, aka FKDL, in Paris, on Saturday. AP "Josephine Baker has always been, for me, a somewhat iconic figure of that era. Both wild and free-spirited, but also deeply connected to music, musicals, and dance,″ he said. ''She was an extraordinary character, an incredible woman." Baker was the first Black woman inducted into France's Pantheon, joining such luminaries as philosopher Voltaire, scientist Marie Curie and writer Victor Hugo. ''My mother wouldn't have liked words like iconic, star, or celebrity. She would have said, no, no let's keep it simple,″ her son said. Associated Press

5 reasons to visit Louvre Abu Dhabi this summer

If you're looking for an exciting (and blissfully) air-conditioned thing to do this summer, why not head to Louvre Abu Dhabi? Tucked away on Saadiyat Island and topped with that iconic dome that plays with sunlight like a dream, the museum has lined up some brilliant experiences over the sunny months. From VR time-travel to seeing a historic painting and cosmic fun for the kids, this season is packed with reasons to swing by. Here's why you should book your next outing at Louvre Abu Dhabi. Cheaper tickets for UAE residents First off, there's a handy 30 percent off on online bookings for UAE residents, so tickets worth Dhs65 are now available for Dhs45. That's a decent little bonus for planning ahead. And if you're visiting with kids under 18, even better, there's a cosmic exhibition at the Children's Museum that's completely free for them. VR takes you back in time One of the biggest highlights this summer is the new Quantum Dome Project – a collective VR experience that's like a time machine. This 40-minute adventure lets you journey through Imperial Rome, medieval Baghdad and Mughal India in a race across centuries. Tickets are Dhs95 for Louvre Abu Dhabi's admission tickets holders. It's family-friendly, accessible by wheelchair users and available in Arabic, English and French. On weekdays, the last session kicks off at 6pm, while on weekends, it runs until 8pm. See Una Bulaqueña for the first time in the UAE Art lovers will want to make time for Una Bulaqueña, now on display for a year. Painted by the famed Filipino artist Juan Luna in 1895, this rare masterpiece is on loan from the Philippines and hasn't often been seen outside the country. There are some exciting new arrivals worth checking out as well. From a striking portrait of Kosa Pan, Siam's first ambassador to France, to a dreamy Venetian scene by Canaletto, the latest additions span continents and centuries. There's also a self-portrait by 19th-century French artist Antoinette Haudebourt-Lescot, a bold abstract work by Kandinsky, and a limestone head of a youth from ancient Cyprus. Whatever age of history you want to travel back to, there's plenty to admire on your next visit. Take kids to see a space-themed experience at the Children's Museum There's a must-see space-themed experience called Picturing the Cosmos at Louvre Abu Dhabi's Children's Museum. Spread across three floors, the exhibition invites young minds to think about how different cultures throughout time have viewed the stars, planets and universe. There are plenty of hands-on games and activities to keep them entertained while learning something new (bonus points for that). Go on a Family Treasure Hunt And if you've got young adventurers in tow, don't miss the Family Treasure Hunt. It's a mobile game available in five languages – Arabic, English, French, Chinese and Russian – designed to keep curious minds busy. All you need is your phone. Scan the code, follow the clues, and explore the permanent galleries in a fresh, puzzle-solving way. From Dhs45. Open Tue-Thu, 10am-6.30pm (exhibition), Fri-Sun, 10am-8.30pm. Closed on Mon. Saadiyat Cultural District, Saadiyat Island, .
