Waqf tribunal being established in Madurai, says T.N. Minister

The Hindu22-04-2025
The Tamil Nadu government is taking steps to establish a Waqf tribunal in Madurai for the benefit of those in the southern districts of the State, Minister for Minorities and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare S.M. Nasar said in the Assembly on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).
A G.O. was issued in March this year to create 13 posts in the Waqf tribunal in Madurai, the Minister said during the Question Hour in the House, replying to a query by Papanasam MLA M.H. Jawahirullah.
As for Mr. Jawahirullah's request for setting up tribunals in Coimbatore and Tiruchi, the Minister said that if it was found to be a necessity, the Chief Minister would be consulted in this regard.
The Tamil Nadu government constituted Tamil Nadu Waqf Tribunal in 2018 for the determination of any disputes relating to Waqf or Waqf properties, as per Section 83 of the Waqf Act, 1995.
The tribunal consists of a district judge as chairman, an officer from the State Civil Services, equivalent in rank to that of the Additional District Magistrate, as a member, and one person with knowledge in Muslim law and jurisprudence as another member.
To another query by Mr. Jawahirullah, whether the State government would come forward to issue pattas to dargahs, mosques, and madrasaas on Waqf properties, the Minister said that the Revenue Secretary has sought for comments from the Commissioner of Land Administration and the Director of Survey and Settlement in this regard.
Mr. Jawahirullah also requested for a long-term lease for Waqf properties that have been lying unused, so that educational institutions or hospitals could be established there. Though the Board could provide lease for only three years, the government could issue long-term leases, he pointed out.
The Minister said: 'If applications seeking long-term leases of Waqf properties were made, they would be considered, and based on their eligibility, long-term leases would be granted under relevant rules. The issue would be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and he would be consulted for further action.'

BJP hits out at Akhilesh over mosque meeting, clerics object to Dimple Yadav's attire

Lucknow, July 25 (UNI) The controversy surrounding former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav's political meeting inside a mosque refuses to die down, as the BJP and clerics continue their attacks on the Samajwadi Party chief. On the other hand, Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, national president of the All-India Muslim Jamaat, condemned Dimple Yadav's conduct and attire during the meeting, alleging that it violated the sanctity of the mosque. He referred to her as a 'political Hindu woman' and claimed she failed to maintain the appropriate decorum expected within a mosque. 'A mosque is the house of God, and no political party meeting should take place there,' Razvi said. The gathering was reportedly arranged by Maulana Mohibullah Nadvi, the Imam of the mosque at Parliament Street in Delhi. Razvi also alleged that, along with Akhilesh Yadav, SP leaders such as Dharmendra Yadav, Zia Ur Rehman Barq, and several other Hindu individuals were present inside the mosque during the meeting. The presence of two women, he noted, was against Sharia principles. He demanded that Maulana Mohibullah seek forgiveness and apologize to the Muslim community for his actions, accusing him of turning a sacred space into a political platform. 'If he does not seek forgiveness, Muslim organizations will launch protests against him and appeal to the mosque committee to dismiss him from his position as Imam,' he added. The BJP also launched a sharp attack on the Samajwadi Party chief, saying that 'writing slogans on posters does not change one's deeds.' The criticism came in response to a poster displayed outside the SP headquarters, which claimed that Akhilesh Yadav refrains from divisive politics and avoids using religious sites like temples and mosques for political purposes. BJP spokesperson Manish Shukla said, 'Samajwadi Party's politics is deeply entrenched in religion. Akhilesh Yadav's attempts to mix politics with religion are well known. His wife, Dimple Yadav, accompanied him on one such visit, drawing criticism from several clerics.' Shukla said, 'During a meeting near the Parliament complex, Dimple Yadav was questioned by a cleric over her attire and behaviour inside the mosque. The cleric even demanded an apology. Had a Hindu priest made such remarks, SP's online supporters would have erupted in anger against the Hindu community. But since the criticism came from within their vote bank, there has been complete silence.' UNI XC-MBD AAB PRS

Supreme Court Asks Delhi HC To Hear Case Against 'Udaipur Files' On Monday

A petition had been filed against the release of the film "Udaipur Files" for allegedly promoting communalism and vilifying the Muslim community. The Supreme Court on Friday urged the Delhi High Court to hear the petitions challenging the release of the film 'Udaipur Files' – which has been accused of promoting communalism – on Monday (July 28). The movie is based on the murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur who was killed in June 2022. Islamic scholar Arshad Madani and Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the murder case, moved the apex court against the release of the movie, saying it spreads hatred against Muslims and was deeply communal in nature. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymala Bagchi asked the petitioners to approach the Delhi High Court after the Central government allowed the movie release after certain modifications. 'First, go to HC and pursue, and then come here. Now the other side says he [movie producer] is satisfied with the central government order, and he does not want to pursue the case here. So you go to HC now. Why waste our time?" the bench said. This came after a petition seeking the release of the movie was filed by movie producers against a Delhi High Court order that stayed the release of the movie and asked the Central government to review it first. The Supreme Court allowed the government to review the film, and a panel appointed by the government asked producers to make certain changes before release. However, the government on Thursday told the Supreme Court that the film is 'crime-focused" and does not target any specific community. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the dialogues are generic and references to terrorism are context-specific. The movie revolves around the accused in the case, Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous, who allegedly murdered and beheaded Lal over a social media post he shared supporting a former BJP leader. The killing, carried out in broad daylight, had sparked national outrage. However, Madani had argued that the film unfairly extrapolates that crime to project an entire community as complicit or sympathetic to terrorism. The trial continues in the Special NIA Court, with hearings set to resume after the court's summer break. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
