Barry Hills dies aged 88 as tributes paid to trainer of more than 3,000 winners
Barry Hills had a brilliant career and he won four of the five British Classics at least once, before he handed over the stable's licence to son Charlie in 2011
Tributes have been paid to top horse racing trainer Barry Hills who has died at the age of 88.
Hills sent out more than 3,000 winners during a brilliant career which lasted more than 40 years - and saw him saddle winners of four of the five British Classics at least once.
He set out at South Bank Stables in Lambourn and 1973 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Rheingold, 24-time scorer Further Flight and 2004 Guineas hero Haafhd were among the best horses he trained.
A statement from the British Horseracing Authority said: "All of us at the BHA are saddened to learn of the death of Barry Hills and send our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.
"Barry's contribution to racing was immense and he will rightly be remembered as one of the great figures of our sport."
In a post on his X account, son Charlie Hills said: 'Gone but will never be forgotten #dad.'
Charlie took on the stable's licence in 2011 when his father, who battled serious illnesses including cancer, retired.
He briefly made a return to the sport after the death of his son John in 2014. Hills was also father to Michael and Richard, both successful riders who rode almost 2,000 winners each and George, who has worked in bloodstock.
"Very sorry to hear about the death of Barry Hills. In awe of him, tough as nails," commentator Mike Cattermole wrote on X. "Incredible life which changed after an almighty gamble with Frankincense in the 1968 Lincoln. Arc-winning trainer within five years. Patriarch of an amazing racing family. Thoughts with them all."
Trainer Dylan Cunha said it was "devastating" to hear his former boss had passed away.
"My deepest condolences & sympathies with the Hills family," he said on the social media platform. "Barry Hills was a true legend, a master indeed & I always think back to the best days I ever had working there."
Hills, who prepared Tap On Wood to take the 2,000 Guineas in 1979 and saddled Ghanaati three decades years later, had ten British and Irish Classics on his record.
Starting out as a jockey, one of his more unusual successes came in the 1992 Stayers' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival with Nomadic Way.
The blinkered runner switched between the two codes of racing and he also claimed the 1988 Cesarewitch Handicap. He died in 2012 at the age of 27.
And Further Flight was a real stable favourite, galloping to victory in five editions of the Jockey Club Cup.
A spokesperson for the Racehorse Owners Association said: "Everyone at the ROA is deeply saddened by the passing of Barry Hills, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this time.
"Barry made an extraordinary contribution to racing and will be remembered as one of the sport's true greats."

Scotland star Russell leads Lions to victory in Perth - and Sir Clive insists he MUST start against Wallabies
Finn Russell inspired the British and Irish Lions to victory over Western Force on Saturday - underlining his case to start at fly-half in the Test series against Australia. Russell was at the peak of his powers as the Lions routed their hosts in Perth to get their tour under way with a dominant 54-7 victory. In the first half especially, the Scotland star was pivotal in the creation of two tries for his team and was the best player on the field. After a trophy-laden season with Bath at club level, Russell has carried his form Down Under and Mail Sport columnist Sir Clive Woodward insists he MUST start against the Wallabies if he remains fit. Sir Clive said: 'I've been a big fan of Russell for a long time. He guided the Lions expertly at fly-half, emphasising his place as the leading contender to be the Test playmaker. 'He takes the right options at the right times. He doesn't overplay when he doesn't need to, picking the correct passes. He will take some dislodging. 'I think Russell will be the difference in the Test series. Simply put, the Lions have to have him in their team. Australia, meanwhile, do not have a player of his calibre.' The Lions are on red alert to fly-out a new scrum-half after Tomos Williams suffered a hamstring in the victory over the Western Force. Williams scored twice at the Optus Stadium and must now await medical reports before Andy Farrell decides whether to bring in a replacement. Scotland scrum-half Ben White would be the most likely candidate, given he is currently on tour in New Zealand and could join the squad in Brisbane on Sunday night. 'Tomos has come off holding his hamstring,' said Farrell. 'We will only know in the morning. I don't what the timings are but you have to let these things settle down and give it a little bit of space. 'We need to talk about that and assess that and make the right call for the group. He was playing well and I am sure there is a bit of concern there but you can only deal with the here and now so fingers crossed.' Farrell revealed that fellow scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park is fit to return for Wednesday's match against the Queensland Reds, easing the pressure on his No 9 reserves. Williams' injury marred a high-scoring victory in Perth, where the Lions' contingent of Kiwi, Australian and South African players were mocked by the stadium announcer. Western Force skipper Nic White felt the Lions were refereed on reputation, meaning decisions went in favour of the tourists. 'There was probably a bit of perception that we wouldn't be able to live with them, so we didn't get any reward,' said White. 'That should change after tonight, definitely.' Western Force coach Simon Cron revealed he is happy to share information with other Australian provinces as they plot to bring down the touring side. 'The other franchises will take a few learnings from tonight,' said Cron. You always get a bit more out of the second game. 'In Australia, one of the big things that been changing is that everyone works for the greater good. I think everybody will in turn look at each other's games and ask the odd question. We're really open to talking to all of them, for the country.'

Emma Raducanu issues telling four-word response after being quizzed on Carlos Alcaraz relationship as romance rumours intensify
Emma Raducanu has finally addressed rumours surrounding her off-court connection with Carlos Alcaraz. The pair are due to partner in doubles at the US Open in August, but speculation about a possible bond beyond the tennis court has grown after Raducanu was seen supporting the Spanish star at the Queen's Club Championships earlier this month. Raducanu was seen supporting Alcaraz last Thursday and Saturday, sparking talk around Queen's that there might be 'something going on between them', as the pair were spotted laughing and joking together and arriving at the venue just minutes apart. Their most recent link-up came this week, with Alcaraz being confirmed as the latest global ambassador of Evian ahead of Wimbledon - the tournament's official water supplier since 2008. Raducanu also works with Evian, her collaborative work starting after she became the hottest property in British sport by winning the US Open in 2021, which led to her signing lucrative deals with the likes of Nike and Christian Dior. When asked whether they had discussed tactics for the US Open during the Evian event, the British No 1 said: 'No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with Evian. 'Yeah, we were just getting some volley practicing ahead of New York. Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.' Later in the press conference, Raducanu was inevitably asked about the romance rumours, to which she smiled and said: 'We're just good friends.' The interview moderator then cut off further questions, prompting Raducanu to laugh and remark: 'Way to wrap up!' The two US Open champions - Raducanu won in 2021, Alcaraz a year later - are good friends, growing up together on the tour. 'He's so nice, very happy, amazing values and just a really positive light to be around,' said Raducanu about Alcaraz when asked how their bond began. 'I've known him for years. Wimbledon 2021 was the first time I started getting to know him. He was always playing the day before me, I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too. 'It was really cool to go through that tournament together and then I kept going through the US Open, we were staying in touch for the whole time and, yeah, it's nice. 'We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago.' Alcaraz, also 22, told Mail Sport at Queen's that Raducanu made him wait before agreeing to team up. 'Gotta keep them on their toes!' Raducanu joked. 'I had to ask my team if they thought I should play, but when he asked me, I was going to say yes, I just had to go through the formality of asking my coach.' Ahead of Wimbledon, Alcaraz clinched his second Queen's Club title with a thrilling 7–5, 6–7(5), 6–2 win over Jiri Lehecka last Sunday.
