Liverpool say Diogo Jota's No 20 shirt will be ‘immortalised'
Liverpool have said Diogo Jota 's number 20 shirt will be 'rightly immortalised' after the 28-year-old's death in a car accident in Spain. Jota was travelling with his brother, Andre Silva, when their car veered off the road and caught fire following what police suspect was a tyre blowout. They had been travelling to Santander ahead of a ferry crossing to the UK. A tribute to the Portuguese on the Liverpool website called Jota a 'respected and much-loved teammate' both on and off the pitch, adding that 'the No 20 will be rightly immortalised for his contributions'. 'What cruelly has proved to be his final flourish in football saw Jota become a Premier League champion and a UEFA Nations League winner,' said the statement. 'The No 20 will be rightly immortalised for his contributions as part of Liverpool's 2024-25 title-winners – the club's 20th – with his trademark shimmy and strike in front of the Kop to seal victory in April's Merseyside derby a poignant last goal of his life,' it added. Though the statement suggests the nature of the incident means that his number will be 'immortalised', it is unknown whether the club have any formal plans to retire the shirt, though some fans have called for that to happen. Liverpool have never retired a number before, though other clubs have done so following similar incidents. Following Liverpool's title win, Jota remarked at the time: 'To arrive at this particular season with the title that I've been chasing for a lot of years and in the best league in the world – for me where I dreamed to play as a kid – it's a moment I will cherish forever. 'It is a remarkable achievement for a small guy that came from Gondomar, where I had this dream. To arrive at this moment was outstanding,' he said. A vigil will be held at the Chapel of Resurrection in Gondomar, Jota and Silva's hometown on the outskirts of Porto, before the funeral takes place on Saturday, 5 July.

10:09:04 Crowds in Portugal gather for the saddest of homecomings By Rob Harris, Sports correspondent, in Gondomar On a quiet side street by Capela da Ressurreicao, on the outskirts of Porto, the crowd had been building through the night. Waiting for the saddest of homecomings. And at 11.30pm last night, the tranquillity of the night was broken by dozens applauding as the hearse carrying the coffins of two footballing sons of Gondomar arrived. The tragedy has resonated around the world. But their loss is felt most painfully here in their hometowns. A few minutes' drive away at Gondomar Sport Club, the collection of flowers, scarves, jerseys and candles was growing outside the academy named after Jota. It's there I encountered a former teammate of the 28-year-old who went on to win every major English trophy with Liverpool. Miguel Rocha was wearing one of Jota's Number 20 Liverpool shirts and clutching a jersey from previous club, Wolves, gifted by his friend. They played together here for a decade, through the youth ranks. "Back then, every child dreams of going professional," Rocha told Sky News. "But at the same time, we know it's very difficult, but he got it. "Me and my colleagues who played together back then, we were all very proud. "This community of Gondomar, as well as Portugal, every time we saw Diogo Jota on the pitch, we felt very proud. Nothing but pride." Licínio Ribeiro Correia watched both brothers growing up at Gondomar and continued to spend time with them. "We could see right away in Diogo that he was hungry for the ball," he recalled. "When he played, the goals were a spectacle. "Then he left here and went to Paços de Ferreira, he went to a bigger club and oh well, we lost Diogo." But Jota never forgot his roots, sending a shirt back from England to Correia. The forward's last act in a Portugal shirt was helping his country to a second Nations League title. He left Liverpool after a Premier League trophy parade and so many at the vigil came in the club's red shirts. One of them was Afonso Gama who has just completed the season playing for Gondomar's under-19s. Through the sadness, Gama reflected on seeing a player rise from such a modest, low-level club to the heights of the sport. "He made us believe that's possible," Gama told Sky News. Rocha also spoke of his pride at seeing Jota go on to win some of football's biggest prizes. "I was very proud of every goal he achieves, like playing in the Premier League and then winning the Premier League. "Every child dreams of becoming professional but we know it's very difficult, but me and my colleagues who we played with back then are all very proud. "Every time we see Jota on the pitch we feel nothing but proud." Cole Palmer stars in ‘possibly greatest thing I've watched' as Chelsea star helps rivals he has ‘skinned' in Nike ad
COLE PALMER has left fans speechless after starring in a new advert. The Chelsea star appeared in the new Nike ad, which shows him as the head of a legal firm offering help for players who have been "skinned" by him. 8 8 8 8 8 8 Palmer himself has a limited appearance in the video, but his arrival is perfectly timed. The video starts out with a man in a suit and a haircut identical to Palmer's asking if the viewer knows anyone who has been "skinned" by the England international. In a reference to other TV ads like InjuryLawyers4U, the man says: "Have you or someone you love been skinned by Cole Palmer? Worried Cole's highlight reel will be your legacy?" After showing some highlights of Palmer skinning some rivals with his dribbling, the man reveals the fictional firm is called "Reputational Damage Specialists". He goes on to explain how the firm will create a "recovery plan to get you back on the pitch," with a number of "victims" of Palmer's skills shown to be in distress over their traumatic experience. Part of the recovery process includes surgery from an "expert reconstruction team" to help players start afresh, including a new identity, a new kit and a new life. The man then walks into a room with a large wooden table which has four people standing behind it while a central chair is shown with its back to the camera. Each of the people behind the table are shown to have a Palmer haircut identical to the first man, before the chair turns around to reveal company boss Palmer wearing a sharp suit with his fingers touching together. The video then moves back to a widepan shot with Palmer now showing off a devious smile while his underlings perform his signature rubbing shoulders celebration. This final scene has a sinister laughing track playing along with a phone number: +44-800-skinned. Chelsea vs Tottenham fan battle - 'Kane's better than Drogba at EVERYTHING' | Stoppage Time Pictures were later shared on Palmer's Instagram of him wearing his suit and having his feet up, while another showed him with a mischievous smile and holding a phone to his ear. Reacting to the video, one fan said: "That ad was cold." A second said: " haircut... approved." A third added: "Nike brought back the goods." Another said: "Possibly the greatest thing I have ever watched." 8 8 A fifth said: "Palmer single-handedly just saved Nike ads, the game's so back." Palmer has a number of Premier League rivals to count among his victims. Some of the most memorable - or humiliating, depending on your point of view - include Manchester United's Manuel Ugarte and Everton 's Jarrad Branthwaite. Team-mates aren't safe either, with videos from Blues training showing the attacking midfielder nutmegging Noni Madueke. Palmer has thus far helped Chelsea make the Club World Cup quarter-finals. They are now up against Palmeiras to book a spot in the final four. That match will commence at 2am on Saturday.
