Grand Canyon fire that was left to burn swells 50% after destroying historic lodge
Local media reported around 280 National Park Service workers lost their housing in the blaze sparked by lightning on July 4.
'It's just like perfect tinder-dry for a fire,' said spokesperson Stefan La-Sky of record-low tree moisture in ponderosa pine and fir forest on the North Rim.
Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has demanded an independent investigation into why National Park Service staff let the fire burn during the driest time of the summer in a botched attempt to reduce wildfire risks and improve forest health.
The National Park Service said it initially treated the fire with a 'confine and contain' strategy to allow for the natural role of fire to reduce fuel accumulations, stimulate new plant growth and help regulate insects and disease.
It switched to an 'aggressive full suppression strategy' after strong northwest winds on July 11, uncommon to the area, drove the fire towards park buildings on the edge of the canyon, according to the InciWeb U.S. government wildfire site.
The blaze was the second so-called managed wildfire on the North Rim in as many decades to have raged out of control.
The Warm Fire in 2006 was allowed to burn for weeks following a lightning strike before high winds sent it out of control, briefly trapping hundreds of tourists and park workers before they were evacuated. It went on to burn 59,000 acres (24,000 hectares), much of it severely.
The North Rim of the park will remain closed for the rest of the 2025 season, which runs to October, and inner canyon trails and campgrounds are closed until further notice, the National Park Service said. The South Rim of the park, which attracts around 5 million visitors annually, remains open.

Hajiji's choice: Sabah PKR ready for any decision by Gabungan Rakyat president on electoral pact
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah PKR is open to any decision by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as he is expected to set the direction of the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition for the upcoming state election. Hajiji, who is Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah president, is set to announce the party's and - in extension - the coalition's stance on continued cooperation with Pakatan Harapan. Sabah PKR chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said that Hajiji is expected to make the announcement at Gagasan Rakyat's AGM on Sunday (July 27). "I expect the Chief Minister and Gagasan Rakyat president to announce a decision on whether to continue cooperation with Pakatan Harapan or not. "As a Pakatan component party, we are ready to face any possibility," he said when contacted on Saturday (Jul 26). Chief Minister Hajiji told reporters that his policy speech at Sunday's Gagasan Rakyat general assembly would reflect the political direction of Gagasan Rakyat with its local coalition GRS in the coming state election due by Nov 11. However, Mustapha stressed that his party would leave it entirely to the people of Sabah to determine the political direction of the state. "We have full faith in the wisdom of the voters and the people of Sabah in determining the political direction of the state for the next five years," he added. Sabah Pakatan forged a coalition government with GRS in January 2023 after Sabah Barisan Nasional, led by Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, withdrew their support for Hajiji. Hajiji survived the political coup with the support of Pakatan and defected Umno assemblymen. The AIFF's national team director told The Times of India on Thursday that Xavi's name was on the list of applicants. The report also quoted an AIFF technical committee member saying the his candidacy was deemed too expensive to pursue. "The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine," the AIFF said in a statement. It had not been previously reported that the AIFF had also received an application purporting to be from Manchester City manager Guardiola. The AIFF Technical Committee said it had reviewed 170 applications for the Indian men's head coach role, narrowing the list to 10 before short-listing three candidates. The AIFF sacked former India manger Igor Stimac in June last year before appointing Spaniard Manolo Marquez, who left the job this month and returned to his role as coach of Indian Super League team FC Goa.
