Grand Canyon fire that was left to burn swells 50% after destroying historic lodge

Daily Maverick15-07-2025
The so-called Dragon Bravo Fire swelled to 8,570 acres (3,468 hectares) after burning the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and 70 other structures, including tourist cabins and park staff housing over the weekend, a spokesperson for the incident team said.
Local media reported around 280 National Park Service workers lost their housing in the blaze sparked by lightning on July 4.
'It's just like perfect tinder-dry for a fire,' said spokesperson Stefan La-Sky of record-low tree moisture in ponderosa pine and fir forest on the North Rim.
Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has demanded an independent investigation into why National Park Service staff let the fire burn during the driest time of the summer in a botched attempt to reduce wildfire risks and improve forest health.
The National Park Service said it initially treated the fire with a 'confine and contain' strategy to allow for the natural role of fire to reduce fuel accumulations, stimulate new plant growth and help regulate insects and disease.
It switched to an 'aggressive full suppression strategy' after strong northwest winds on July 11, uncommon to the area, drove the fire towards park buildings on the edge of the canyon, according to the InciWeb U.S. government wildfire site.
The blaze was the second so-called managed wildfire on the North Rim in as many decades to have raged out of control.
The Warm Fire in 2006 was allowed to burn for weeks following a lightning strike before high winds sent it out of control, briefly trapping hundreds of tourists and park workers before they were evacuated. It went on to burn 59,000 acres (24,000 hectares), much of it severely.
The North Rim of the park will remain closed for the rest of the 2025 season, which runs to October, and inner canyon trails and campgrounds are closed until further notice, the National Park Service said. The South Rim of the park, which attracts around 5 million visitors annually, remains open.

Another legend calls it a day - Tamiya, the man who brought perfection to plastic race car models, dies at 90

Under the leadership of Shunsaku Tamiya, Tamiya Inc. gained worldwide popularity for producing kits that excelled in quality and historical accuracy. -- PHOTOS: TAMIYAUSA/FACEBOOK SHIZUOKA (Japan): Chairman of the Japanese plastic model kit maker Tamiya Inc., Shunsaku Tamiya, known for its radio-controlled cars and Mini 4WD models, has died, the company has announced. He was 90, Kyodo News reported. Tamiya, who died of undisclosed causes, was credited with raising the global profile of the Shizuoka-based toy maker. While the funeral was held privately by close relatives, the company plans to hold a memorial event. The Shizuoka native long served as the company's president, helping raise his hometown's standing in the plastic model industry through trade and hobby shows, according to the maker. After graduating from Waseda University in Tokyo in 1958, he joined Tamiya Shoji & Co., which was then operated by his father, Yoshio. Tamiya became president of the company in 1984 and was named chairman in 2008. For the record, Tamiya led the company that bore his family's name for more than four decades, turning it into one of the world's largest makers of build-it-yourself plastic model kits of race cars and military vehicles. Since producing its first such kit in 1960, of the Japanese World War II battleship Yamato, Tamiya Inc has become a globally known brand that also produces remote-controlled cars. Under the leadership of Tamiya, who replaced his father as the company's president, Tamiya Inc won popularity worldwide for making kits that excelled in quality and historical detail. In 1967, one of its miniature models so faithfully reproduced a Formula One racing car, down to the location of a starter battery beneath the driver's seat, that the maker of the original vehicle, Honda Motor, wondered if he had access to trade secrets but decided to let it pass. His pursuit of accuracy also once took him to the embassy of the Soviet Union in Tokyo, where he sought details about Warsaw Pact tanks. This drew the attention of Japan's public security bureau, which placed him under surveillance for a time. Tamiya was serving as the company's chair at the time of his death. According to the company, he still enjoyed standing at the entrance to an annual trade show near Tamiya's headquarters in Shizuoka, a city south of Tokyo, to watch the children come in. Although the company continues to produce model kits in Shizuoka, it also opened a factory in the Philippines in 1994. -- Agencies

Hajiji's choice: Sabah PKR ready for any decision by Gabungan Rakyat president on electoral pact

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah PKR is open to any decision by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as he is expected to set the direction of the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition for the upcoming state election. Hajiji, who is Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah president, is set to announce the party's and - in extension - the coalition's stance on continued cooperation with Pakatan Harapan. Sabah PKR chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said that Hajiji is expected to make the announcement at Gagasan Rakyat's AGM on Sunday (July 27). "I expect the Chief Minister and Gagasan Rakyat president to announce a decision on whether to continue cooperation with Pakatan Harapan or not. "As a Pakatan component party, we are ready to face any possibility," he said when contacted on Saturday (Jul 26). Chief Minister Hajiji told reporters that his policy speech at Sunday's Gagasan Rakyat general assembly would reflect the political direction of Gagasan Rakyat with its local coalition GRS in the coming state election due by Nov 11. However, Mustapha stressed that his party would leave it entirely to the people of Sabah to determine the political direction of the state. "We have full faith in the wisdom of the voters and the people of Sabah in determining the political direction of the state for the next five years," he added. Sabah Pakatan forged a coalition government with GRS in January 2023 after Sabah Barisan Nasional, led by Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, withdrew their support for Hajiji. Hajiji survived the political coup with the support of Pakatan and defected Umno assemblymen. Hajiji himself has in recent months voiced his support for forging an electoral pact with Sabah Pakatan but is facing pressure from some partners within his GRS coalition who want to go solo in the state election. At the joint opening of the Gabungan Rakyat's youth, women and Beliawanis wings annual meeting earlier on Saturday, Gagasan Rakyat deputy president Datuk Masidi Manjun said that any electoral pact with any party should be led by GRS. "We want allies on our own terms. We don't want to be dictated to by others,' said the GRS secretary-general. Sabah Pakatan and Barisan Nasional have been in discussion on seat-sharing in line with their federal unity government framework. Both state Barisan and GRS have rejected any move for an electoral pact between themselves. Political speculation has been rife that Hajiji might call for the dissolution of the state assembly by next week but others speculate that he might go for the full term, calling it in October, weeks before the automatic Nov 11 dissolution of the 16th state assembly.

Soccer-Xavi application for India coaching job was a hoax, AIFF says

Soccer Football - LaLiga - FC Barcelona Training - Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, Barcelona, Spain - November 3, 2023 Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez with players during training REUTERS/Albert Gea/File Photo (Reuters) -The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed on Saturday that a job application attributed to former Barcelona manager and Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez for the India head coaching role was a hoax. The AIFF's national team director told The Times of India on Thursday that Xavi's name was on the list of applicants. The report also quoted an AIFF technical committee member saying the his candidacy was deemed too expensive to pursue. "The AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine," the AIFF said in a statement. It had not been previously reported that the AIFF had also received an application purporting to be from Manchester City manager Guardiola. The AIFF Technical Committee said it had reviewed 170 applications for the Indian men's head coach role, narrowing the list to 10 before short-listing three candidates. The AIFF sacked former India manger Igor Stimac in June last year before appointing Spaniard Manolo Marquez, who left the job this month and returned to his role as coach of Indian Super League team FC Goa.
