Alabama picks up transfer portal commitment from in-state foe
Alabama baseball picked up its fourth offseason commitment from the transfer portal on Monday.
Former South Alabama infielder Brennan Holt, who spent a year at LSU and a year at Oklahoma State, announced his decision to transfer to the Crimson Tide in a post to social media.
Holt joins pitchers Matthew Tippie (Texas State) and Kaden Humphrey (North Florida) and infielder Justin Osterhouse (Purdue-Fort Wayne) as players Alabama has added via the portal since its season ended with a 6-5 loss to Southern Miss at the Hattiesburg Regional of the NCAA Tournament on May 31.
A product of Parkview Baptist School in Baton Rouge, Holt spent the past two seasons at South Alabama after committing to LSU in 2020. He was rated the No. 5 overall recruit in Louisiana by Perfect Game coming out of high school.
Holt spent one season with the Tigers in 2022 and appeared in five games before obtaining a medical redshirt due to injury and transferring to Oklahoma State for his sophomore season in 2023. He played in 34 games for the Cowboys and batted .173 (11-for-52).
As a redshirt sophomore in 2024, Holt started all 56 games for South Alabama and batted .266 with three home runs, 15 doubles and 24 RBIs. His average rose to .303 as a junior this past season, clubbing six home runs to go with 14 doubles. Holt primarily played second base and was the Jags' leadoff hitter.
He stole 29 bases over two seasons with South Alabama, which finished 23-28 overall in the Sun Belt conference this year.
Alabama capped the 2025 season at 41-18 overall and were 16-14 in SEC play during the regular season in coach Rob Vaughn's second year in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide's 40 victories in the regular season marked the first time since 2002 that Alabama had posted 40 or more wins in a regular season.
Alabama was the No. 2 seed at the Hattiesburg Regional and was ranked No. 20 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll entering the NCAA Tournament.

Nation's No. 2 WR Commits to Alabama
Nation's No. 2 WR Commits to Alabama originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide added another jewel to their 2026 recruiting class on Wednesday. They didn't even have to leave the state to do so. Cederian Morgan, the No. 2 wideout in his class — according to 247Sports — and the top player in Alabama — chose to join Ryan Williams in Tuscaloosa. Advertisement The Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Colorado Buffaloes, Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers were also in play for Morgan, who picked Alabama live on the 247Sports YouTube channel and CBS Sports HQ. "Evaluation echoes that of a luxury sports car: big, smooth, and powerful," 247Sports scouting analyst Gabe Brooks wrote in a May scouting report. "Plays with obvious horsepower, accompanied by some encouraging physical refinement and nuance in regards to fluidity and locomotion. ... Size and track speed suggests that another top-end gear in pads exists, and therefore consistent downfield separation ability." Alexander City (Ala.) Benjamin Russell Wide Receiver Cederian MorganBrian Smith-Auburn Daily Morgan finished his junior season on the gridiron at Benjamin Russell High School with 70 receptions for 1,162 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also competes in the high jump and 100- and 200-meter dashes on the track. Advertisement Morgan joins three On3 five-stars in the Crimson Tide's stacked haul — cornerback Jorden Edmonds, linebacker Xavier Griffin and running back Ezavier Crowell. Prior to Morgan's pledge, DeBoer's class ranked No. 7 in the country for 2026. SEC foes Georgia (No. 2) and Texas A&M (No. 4) were listed ahead of it, per 247Sports. Morgan joins recent receiver commits Brian Williams and Owen Cabell, both three-star prospects. Four-star quarterback Jett Thomalla, an Iowa State flip, is also part of the package. SEC Rival Hands Florida Massive Recruiting Loss on Wednesday
SEC Rival Hands Florida Massive Recruiting Loss on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As we enter the month of July, commitments from high-value recruits will come more frequently and sooner. For the Florida Gators and head coach Billy Napier, after a very successful June on the recruiting trail, the next few weeks will be enormous for the future of the program. Advertisement One huge domino fell in the recruiting cycle Wednesday afternoon, as 2026 five-star wide receiver Cederian Morgan committed to the University of Alabama, reported by Rivals' Hayes Fawcett. Morgan, the No. 2 wideout in the country in his class according to Rivals, was one of the Gators' top targets, but chose to stay in his home state with Kalen DeBoer's Crimson Tide. Napier and Florida must now turn their attention to numerous other 2026 recruits, especially at the wide receiver position. With phenom quarterback DJ Lagway entering his sophomore season in 2025, the clock is ticking on Florida's offensive future. Advertisement UF currently has two receivers committed to the program in the 2026 class in Marquez Daniel and Justin Williams, both of whom are four-star recruits. Daniel is the No. 13 wideout in the Top 247 rankings while Williams is ranked as the 28th best at the position in On3's Industry Rankings. The highest-rated receiver Florida is going after now is five-star Calvin Russell, who falls just one place behind Morgan at No. 3 in the Top 247 wideout rankings. Russell listed UF as one of his final eight schools he will choose between when he announces his commitment this Saturday. Another target at the position for the Gators is four-star Somourian Wingo. The St. Augustine, Florida, native is ranked as the 22nd-best receiver in the 2026 class in the Top 247. While he doesn't have an official commitment date set, he is expected to decide on his future in late July or early August. While Florida missed on Morgan, allowing him to commit to an SEC rival, there are still plenty of options in the class of 2026 at the wide receiver position for Napier and his staff. Encarnacion-Strand hits his 1st career grand slam to power Reds' rally to beat Red Sox 8-4
Associated Press BOSTON (AP) — Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit his first career grand slam during a five-run seventh inning and the Cincinnati Reds rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 8-4 on Wednesday night. Elly De La Cruz, TJ Friedl and Santiago Espinal added RBIs for the Reds. Nick Martinez (6-8) pitched 6 2/3 innings, yielding four runs off nine hits to help Cincinnati avoid being swept in the three-game interleague series. Wilyer Abreu hit a two-run home run for the Red Sox. Romy Gonzalez drove in two runs, including an RBI double in the seventh to pull Boston within 5-4. Brennan Bernardino opened for Boston, pitching 1 1/3 innings before handing off to Jorge Alcala and then Chris Murphy. That trio held Cincinnati to three hits and no runs over 5 2/3 innings before Greg Weissert took over. Weissert (2-3) got the final out of the sixth. But things fell apart in the seventh when Stephenson led off with a single, followed by Rece Hinds reaching on a fielder's choice and Gavin Lux walking to load the bases for Encarnacion-Strand. Weissert was pulled after surrendering five runs off four hits. Earlier Wednesday, Abreu hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth to help Boston earn a 5-3 win in the completion of a game suspended by rain on Tuesday. Key moment Abreu jumped on Martinez's changeup in the sixth, driving it over the right-field wall and into the Reds' bullpen beyond the reach of Hinds. It came after Hinds had made a catch against the same wall in the fifth, robbing Jarren Duran of an extra-base hit. Key stat Encarnacion-Strand's grand slam was Cincinnati's sixth of the season. Up next LHP Andrew Abbott (7-1, 1.79 ERA) will start for Cincinnati when it opens its three-game series at Philadelphia on Friday. RHP Lucas Giolito (4-1, 3.99) is scheduled to start for Boston at Washington. ___ AP MLB: recommended
