Kinahan cartel leaders 'should be worried' after extradition of senior lieutenant
Drew Harris urged members, both junior and senior, in the cartel — who are either at large or in jail — to think about whether or not to help gardaí in their efforts to bring the leaders to justice.
Mr Harris was commenting on the transfer over a week ago of McGovern — seen as the right-hand man of cartel leader Daniel Kinahan — by gardaí and military pilots from Dubai. He was brought to the Criminal Courts of Justice to be charged with directing and facilitating an organised crime group and with a Kinahan-Hutch feud murder.
Speaking in Garda Headquarters in Phoenix Park, Mr Harris said the leaders, who are still in Dubai, should be in fear they will be next.
'Yes, they should be worried," he said. "They should have been worried now for a number of years because there's huge investigative effort and international investigative effort has gone into the Kinahan organised crime gang.'
He said a lot of comments of what 'couldn't be done have been done' and a legal extradition had happened.
Mr Harris said because of the cooperation of police in Dubai and legal authorities in the UAE, 'we've seen an individual extradited back to Ireland to face justice here'.
Mr Harris reminded other members of the cartel they are in a bind, but there are options for them, in terms of cooperating with gardaí.
He said: 'I'd also like to point out too, the other senior lieutenants in the Kinahan organised crime group, who are now facing justice or who are now imprisoned, the sanctions and the rewards still stand — there's $15m there of reward money through the federal law enforcement authorities of the US, so that is still in play.
I just want to remind other members of the Kinahan organised crime gang the perilous position they are now in, that ourselves and other law enforcement are fixed on them and are fixed on bringing them, all of them, to justice.
'So, all of them should be worried and thinking about the choices, the serious life choices that are now ahead of them in respect of what to do over the coming months.'
Deputy Commissioner, Security, Governance and Strategy, Justin Kelly said a couple of years ago, when he was Assistant Commissioner, Operations and Security, both he and the commissioner had said gardaí would be 'relentless', and the extradition of McGovern was 'absolute evidence' of that.
He said the 'exact same' applied to other transnational crime gangs.
Referring to the Kinahan cartel, he said at one point there were 47 members of it in jail.
Mr Kelly also called on Kinahan lieutenants to have a 'really good think' about what choices they make in the coming months.

Gardaí in Galway investigating multiple thefts from parked vehicles
In an appeal for witnesses, a garda spokesperson explained officers are investigating two separate incidents of theft from vehicles, as well as a burglary. The first incident occurred at approximately 5.40pm on Thursday, July 31 at Applegreen Petrol Station on the Tuam Road, Galway city. A grey BMW X3 jeep was broken into while parked outside the station and a black suitcase was taken from the vehicle. Anyone who may have seen anyone interfering with the vehicle or anyone who may know the whereabouts of the black suitcase is asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091-538000 The second incident occurred between 1.30pm and 1.45pm on Friday, August 1, outside the AIB in Oranmore village. A white Peugeot Partner van, which was outside the bank, had the passenger side window smashed and a quantity of cash was taken from the passenger's seat of the vehicle. Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed any person acting suspiciously in the area or any person interfering with this van to contact Oranmore Garda Station 091-388030 or the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111. A further incident of burglary occurred at Kilkerrin Road, Glenamaddy, Co Galway at approximately 3.15pm on Friday, August 1. 'Intensive' efforts underway to secure release of kidnapped Irish aid worker in Haiti
EFFORTS ARE CONTINUING to secure the release of Irish aid worker Gena Heraty, who was kidnapped along with several people from an orphanage in Haiti. Gena was abducted along with seven others, including a three-year-old child, from the Sainte-Hélène orphanage in Kenscoff, Haiti, over the weekend. Tánaiste and foreign affairs minister Simon Harris has described the situation as 'extremely sensitive' and said 'intensive and ongoing efforts' are underway involving Irish diplomatic teams in Dublin, Washington and London. In a statement issued last night, Harris reiterated that efforts are ongoing to ensure that 'everything possible is done to bring about the release of Gena, her co-workers and indeed the three-year-old child at the centre of this case.' Gena, a native of Westport, Co Mayo, oversees the Sainte-Helene orphanage in Kenscoff, 10km southeast of Port-au-Prince. The facility is operated by humanitarian organisation Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs (Our Little Brothers and Sisters). 'Gena is a deeply courageous and kind-hearted person who has given so much of her life to the humanitarian work that she cares so much about,' Harris said. 'As Tánaiste, I treat the safety and well-being of all our citizens with seriousness and sensitivity.' He confirmed that both he and his officials have been in constant contact with Gena's family, as well as local authorities and Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs in Haiti. The Heraty family have said they are 'devastated' but are working closely with the charity and the Irish Government to secure her release. NPH International, which supports the orphanage, said it is 'doing all we can to help bring them home safely' and described the situation as 'under assessment'. The UN has warned that gang violence in Haiti has reached critical levels, with more than 3,100 people killed in the first half of this year. Kenscoff, once considered a safer area, has recently become a target for gangs. Harris said that 'no stone will be left unturned' in the efforts to bring Gena and the other hostages home safely. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is providing consular assistance to Gena's family and will issue further updates as they become available.
