Exclusive: Walmart dives into Summerween with early Halloween push

Walmart is diving into the rising Summerween trend — where Halloween meets the summer heat — with new "Summer Frights" sections in select stores, the retailer shared exclusively with Axios.
Why it matters: Halloween fans aren't waiting for fall to shop for the holiday, which is big money for retailers.
Last year's sales were projected to reach $11.6 billion, according to the National Retail Federation's annual holiday survey.
The NRF has seen the percent of consumers shopping for Halloween before October increase from 32% in 2014 to 47% in 2024.
The big picture: The world's largest retailer tells Axios that around 1,000 of its stores nationwide have added the early Halloween displays, which are quickly gaining a following on TikTok. The products range from $1 to $10.
Walmart views Summerween as a chance to lean into popular trends"in fun and affordable ways," Marlena Bond, the company's vice president of seasonal, told Axios.
Some products like the Summerween Velvet Plush Throw are already out of stock online in some designs.
State of play: Halloween is one of the seasonal events most affected by tariffs, with shortages possible.
The Halloween and Costume Association warned in April that tariffs are threatening to "wipe out Halloween and severely disrupt Christmas unless urgent action is taken."
Michele Boylstein, the association's executive director, previously told Axios that members reported "a wave of order cancellations, and it's creating serious concern about whether shelves will be stocked in time for Halloween."
Flashback: The Summerween concept originated with a 2012 episode of Disney Channel's "Gravity Falls," but has grown in recent years because of social media.
What's next: Walmart told Axios that a new DIY pumpkin head figure will debut during its upcoming July Deals event, which is held July 8-11, with Walmart+ members getting early access.
In the fall, the company says it will have textured terracotta and paper mâché pumpkins and the return of 5' and 7' skeletons.
Zoom out: Walmart isn't alone with its early start. Michaels launched two of its five Halloween collections June 13 and has two planned for July.

Instagram's rolling out the ability to actually listen to a preview of a song that you've shared from Spotify in IG Stories, as opposed to just providing a Spotify link, further refining its music engagement elements. So now, when you share a Spotify music sticker within your IG Stories, viewers will be able to listen to it in-stream. Up till now, you've been able to share Spotify music stickers, but that only provided a link back to the Spotify track. The updated sticker now also includes audio, which is a big improvement. Yet, at the same time, functionally, it's not really new, as you've been able to post music in Stories since forever. But you haven't been able to combine Spotify song sharing within Stories in the same way, to it builds on that functionality. Though you have been able to share songs to your Stories via 'Add Yours' music stickers, while you can also now share songs from Spotify to your IG Notes, a feature that Instagram added last month. And now, you can also share what you're listening to on Spotify direct to Stories as well, adding another music engagement option in the app. WhatsApp added the same for its version of Stories, in WhatsApp Status, last month. The option adds another means to counter the rising influence of TikTok, and potentially replace TikTok's presence in this respect, if TikTok ever ends up getting banned in the U.S. TikTok has become a key platform for music promotion, with music publishers now focusing on the app as an essential connector, with some even changing their artists' song names to better align with TikTok trends. But if TikTok goes bye-bye, as a result of the 'Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,' then all that music engagement will have to go elsewhere, and IG seems to be setting itself up as the best alternative in this respect. Though YouTube is also adding music features to tap into the same opportunity, and with TikTok continuing to get extensions from Trump, it doesn't look like it's going anywhere either way. But still, it's another music engagement option, which will provide more ways for IG users to share their favorite tracks. One woman posted on her dating app profile asking potential suitors to give her their best impersonation of actor Tim Allen's grunts from the show 'Home Improvement.' Advertisement The popular sitcom ran for eight seasons in the early 1990s. Allen's character, Tim 'The Tool Man' Taylor, was known for expressing himself through a very specific grunt sound. Allen's character had a famous grunt — that is clearly still being thought about today. Let me see what you got,' earlier this year. Advertisement To give context to viewers, she wrote in overlay text on her video: 'My version of the 4B movement includes making men on Hinge do an impression of Tim Allen before they're allowed to speak to me.' She played each hilarious impression one by one — and that was only the beginning. The responses to this prompt are hilarious. TikTok / @kathenn25 Advertisement Several other videos of grunting impressions followed, and the most recent one, captioned: 'They're baaaaaaaack (they never left they literally do not stop coming in),' has gone viral — garnering almost 500,000 views. Over 500 people commented on the humorous clip. One curious person asked: 'Is this a kink thing?' Advertisement Another person couldn't believe how well some of the contenders sounded like Allen: 'i refuse to believe that the first one was not sampled directly from the tv show.' One honest commenter gave a bit of an explanation as to why Kathenn is getting a ton of action on this prompt: 'I have no idea why but the tim Allen grunt is the REAL Roman empire for men. I've been doing this shit since I was a kid.' Someone else thought the journey was better than the destination in this situation: 'This is better than dating.' 'Absolute cinema,' another one chimed in. The video even made its way to X (formerly Twitter) where one user shared the video, writing, 'I'm absolutely losing it.' The Tweet received over 1 million views. In a YouTube short clip while on stage at the famous Laugh Factory comedy club, Allen explained that the inspiration for his famous grunt came from a time he was performing a show to a predominantly male audience. While Allen was trying to do his bits on stage, the men were all grunting as they ate their meal, barely paying attention to the comedian. 'I couldn't get their attention. All I was doing on stage, I hear men [grunting]. So I started doing that [grunting]. And these men actually went, 'Huh?' and a career was built,' Allen jokingly explained.
