Sligo athletes Lucie Cawley and Erin Walsh in top form at schools championships
A relatively unknown name to most but a super star in the making to everyone close to her.
On Wednesday. Athlone TUS played host to the Connacht schools championships where Sligo kids dominated the day and in particular, Lucie Cawley. She toed the line in the intermediate girls 1500m steeplechase, a gruelling event to some, but for Cawley a match made in heaven. She lead from pillar to post in the gazing sunshine to record a time of 5min 02seconds, a new Connacht record and a time never recorded by an intermediate school girl on Irish soil, all of this by a first year intermediate student, so yes she will be back in this age category again next year.
Cawley, a member of Sligo Athletic Club, then made the trip to Tullamore on Sunday and moved up an age to u18 and distance to 2000m steeplechase in an attempt to qualify for the European Youth Olympic festival this July in North Macedonia.
With no early pace on, Cawley took it on and never looked back, she ran a time of 6mins 48seconds, which was inside the qualifying standard for the EYOF and breaking the Irish u18 record for the event. A new star has landed!!
Lucie's coach Dermot McDermott wasn't short on praise for the Streamstown girl 'genuinely the best I've ever got and I've had some serious good ones, she just needs to stay healthy year on year and the world's her Oyster'.
Back at the Irish schools on Wednesday and Friday, notable performances from Nicole Flanagan winning the intermediate girls long jump and triple jump, Darragh Burke ran like a scalded cat flying home to clinch a brilliant silver in the senior boys 200m in a rapid time of 21.94 seconds and Ruby Cunnane pushed All-Ireland champion from the age above her over the 75m hurdles for junior girls.
Briain Cullinan was a class apart in the inter boys 400m hurdles as he strode to victory.
Someone was shining down on Erin Walsh from St Attracta's, when she took a remarkable gold in the senior girls long jump, she fouled her first 2 jumps and with only one jump remaining, she played safe on the board but still sprouted wings to fly out the pit and claim gold, a very proud day for Erin and her family.
Summerhill boys stole all the relays while the Mercy girls took the top accolade in the Intermediate girls across all events.
The Irish schools Championsips will take place in Tullamore on Friday the 30th and Saturday the 31st of May, the biggest event of the year for bidding stars.

Enzo Maresca: Chelsea's two-hour hold-up against Benfica at Club World Cup a 'joke'
Enzo Maresca labelled the decision to suspend Chelsea's Club World Cup last-16 tie with Benfica for two hours "a joke" even as his side eventually ran out 4-1 winners in Charlotte, North Carolina. The tie took almost five hours to complete after the teams were forced inside, with the Blues 1-0 up with four minutes remaining thanks to Reece James' free-kick, due to "the risk of lightning in the vicinity of Bank of America Stadium". On the resumption, Angel Di Maria equalised with a controversial stoppage-time penalty to take the game to extra time, only for Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to seal Chelsea's win. Maresca, in his press conference, said of the long delay: "I think it's a joke, to be honest. "It's not football, it's completely something new, I struggle to understand. "I can understand if it's security reasons but if you suspend seven or eight games then it's probably not the right place to do the competition. "It's not normal to suspend the game. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero probably. In Europe how many games get suspended? Zero. "We've been here two weeks and they've already suspended six or seven games, there is some problems for me personally. "I'm talking as a manager because when you're two hours inside and you have to try to keep them (the players) in the game, they're speaking to their families outside for safety reasons, they're eating, they're playing, they're laughing, how can you keep them inside focused for two hours? It's a joke." One of Maresca's players at least was able to make light of the delay, which saw the game finish at 1.40am Irish time time, with defender Trevoh Chalobah posting on social media: "Game started Saturday and ended Sunday". Players were pictured riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room during the enforced break and Maresca told broadcaster DAZN: "Especially when it's 85 minutes, five minutes to go, it's very difficult. "But we tried to keep them in the best way we could in that moment and, at the end, we are in the last eight teams here in this competition and we are very happy." Gianluca Prestianni saw red for Bruno Lage's men in extra time for a second yellow card as Chelsea booked their place against Palmeiras in the quarter-finals. The Blues could now come up against Palmeiras' Stamford Bridge-bound Estevao Willian, whose side defeated fellow Brazilian club Botafogo on Saturday.

Dessie Farrell quits as Dublin manager after quarter final defeat to Tyrone
All over for Dublin boss after they are well beaten by Tyrone Dessie Farrell announced his resignation as Dublin senior football manager is over, after his side's All-Ireland quarter final loss to Tyrone in Croke Park. Farrell broke the news in a post match interview on TV and then clarified his decision in a press conference. 'I've had a great innings," he said. "I think between being a player for Dublin underage and a senior player and then as an underage coach and a senior coach, manager, whatever you want to call it, I've the guts of 40 years, you know. "So it's a long time and it's been a privilege every year, every step of the journey. I've met some great people. I've had a ringside seat for some of the best players that ever performed in the arena out there. "Some of the new lads we brought in this year, I was still getting to know them, maybe but a great crop of fellas as well. It augurs very well for Dublin football and then there's an older gang that I would have taken from an under 13 development squad and seen them grow from young boys to young men and to older men if you like, and that's a privilege not many get to do and I'm very grateful for that. 'I'm very grateful for the dedication and commitment of all the players and all the coaches and all the backroom teams that I've worked with along the way. "It's a special sort of involvement being involved with Dublin football and we all know how dear and special the GAA is to all of us and I'm just so grateful that I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to do what I do and now is the time to move away.' Farrell took over from Jim Gavin after Dublin had completed a record five All-Ireland title wins in a row in 2019. In his first year in charge, during the year of the Covid pandemic which severely disrupted training and games, he led Dublin to another title when they defeated Mayo 2-14 to 0-15.
