Gloucester sign versatile Leinster back Russell

BBC News11-06-2025
Gloucester have signed versatile outside back Rob Russell from Leinster Rugby for the 2025-26 season. The 26-year-old has scored 18 tries in 35 appearances for the United Rugby Championship finalists since his debut in 2021. Russell joined Leinster's academy from Dublin's St Michael's College - which has a strong rugby pedigree - and can play on the wing or at full-back.The Cherry and Whites have not disclosed the length of his contract.
"I'll echo what I said when we signed Ross Byrne earlier this year; there aren't many better academies to come through and learn your trade than Leinster," said Gloucester director of rugby George Skivington."Rob has really shown what he can do when given the opportunity. He's got a pretty decent strike rate for Leinster - almost one try every two games - and he's motivated for a new challenge in the Gallagher Premiership."We're delighted with our back-three talent already, but to add someone like Rob, who covers across the three positions and has all the attacking assets we're looking for, is really pleasing."Russell is the sixth back to move to Gloucester for next season with scrum-half Mike Austin, full-back Ben Redshaw, wing Ben Loader, centre Will Joseph and fly-half Byrne already confirmed.

Who are the favourites to be crowned Premier League champions this season? Sky Bet odds revealed

With less than two weeks until the start of the 2025-26 Premier League season kicking off let's take a look at who are the early favourites to be crowned champions, according the Sky Bet. Unsurprisingly it is reigning champions Liverpool who are the shortest-priced in the market with Arne Slot's side priced at 13/8. While the Reds' success in 2024-25 has played a major role in their support in the betting linesm it is also the moves they've made in the transfer window that has punters excited. With signings that include the likes Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, Liverpool look primed to go back-to-back this upcoming season. Meanwhile - if you're anticipating Liverpool to fail in their bid to win consecutive titles, it is Arsenal who are second-favourites at 2/1. Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle round out the five favourites in the market - with the trio priced at 3/1, 17/2 and 28/1 respectively. Lastly, for those after an outsider, Manchester United are sixth-favourites at 33/1. Sky Bet favourites to win the 2025-26 Premier League title: Liverpool 13/8 Arsenal 2/1 Manchester City 3/1 Chelsea 17/2 Newcastle 28/1 Manchester United 33/1 Tottenham 40/1 Aston Villa 50/1 Brighton 175/1 Nottingham Forest 175/1

Australia v British & Irish Lions: third Test

Update: Date: 2025-08-02T08:45:06.000Z Title: Preamble Content: The West Wing's Toby Ziegler once stated: 'They'll like us when we win!' In the show, this was a questionable justification for yet another US war, but the sentiment probably sits well with the Lions head coach. It is oft repeated that Andy Farrell is a winner and this has broadly been true of his career (if you discount Ireland progressing beyond the quarter finals of a World Cup; but you can't expect one man – however impressive – to solve that particular historical psychodrama). With the series is already won hopes were raised of something resembling a banter team selection for Lions in this cherry-on-the-top third test. To expect this is to misunderstand Farrell and his history. His 13 years as a player at Wigan delivered 15 trophies in their continued domination of rugby league from the 1980s. Key to this domination was the culture of his hometown club. Rugby league was never a fully professional sport, with players working to supplement the modest income from the game and Wigan was the first team to change that. Wigan made the move to full professionalism in the middle of Thatcher's decade and ushered the period of their boot relentlessly stamping on the face of the sport for the best part of two decades. No one else had the money, the desire or the sheer bloody-mindedness to pull it off. Was it fair? Debatable. Was it fun for anyone else? I can speak from personal experience as a non-Wiganer it absolutely was not. Was it successful? Hell, yeah! This unyielding approach arrives in Sydney in a few hours, because they'll like us when we win.
