It is probably unimaginable to most of us to learn that there was a time only 5,000 years ago, when the Sahara was not a desert at all. Instead, it was a green and fertile woodland and vast grassy savannah that hosted a plethora of lakes and rivers, and home to countless dinosaurs that roamed freely across the land. Later, prehistoric hunters and farmers lived in the Sahara alongside a veritable zoo of iconic African wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, hippos, a variety of gazelles, Nile perch, crocodiles, aurochs, Neolithic cattle, turtles, and an enormous collection of large trees and plants.
All this, according to earth scientist Martin Williams, an Emeritus Professor at the University of Adelaide and a world authority on climatic and environmental change. In his captivating memoir, When the Sahara Was Green: How Our Greatest Desert Came to Be (Princeton University Press; 2023/2024), Professor Williams shares stories from his lifetime devoted to researching and exploring the Sahara Desert to provide us with a fascinating and readable overview of the surprisingly complex climate and geography of the Sahara. Professor Williams discusses the evidence that supports the answers that scientists know to some very basic questions, including; why was the Sahara previously much wetter than it is now, and will it become wetter again? ('Not for a long time,' p. 180). Did humans contribute to the Sahara's desertification? ('NO!' Pp. 143; 144-145). And where does all that sand come from? (Chapters 5 & 6).

Professor Williams points out that the Sahara Desert isn't actually all sand. Contrary to popular belief, sandy areas comprise only about 20% of the Sahara. Much of the Sahara consists of gravel along with extensive plateaus and – yes – rocky mountains.
Divided into three parts, this readable history begins when the supercontinent Gondwana first appeared 7 million years ago, and follows its journey as it broke apart into major land masses: South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Zealandia, Arabia, and the Indian subcontinent. Professor Williams also explores and explains ancient glaciations, historic sea level fluctuations, the geological and climatological reasons for why the Green Sahara dried out and became a desert, and how the very old basement rock underlying Africa still influences what happens on the surface today.
Compelling writing and profound knowledge are carefully combined with deep history, decades of field work, personal observations and experiences. In this meticulously researched book, Professor Williams explores a wide variety of topics from the geological and climatic changes that influenced human evolution and created the Sahara as we know it, to modern environmental and political issues that confront us today. Throughout the entire book, Professor Williams' fundamental knowledge of the region's geology, archaeology and ecology makes this book rewarding and fascinating reading.
The book includes lots of maps, photographs, drawings and diagrams to illustrate the regions and concepts that Professor Williams discusses in the text. One piece of advice I have is to use sticky notes as bookmarkers for maps 1, 2 and 3 because you will be referring to these maps many times as you read the book.
I was perhaps most surprised by all the ancient human artifacts, pottery – some packed with fossilized fruits – arrowheads and other stone tools, and even some fossilized bones from ancient humans as well as the animals they interacted with, just lying on the surface of the sand or gravel. Mind-boggling. The anecdotes and first-hand experiences described herein make for tremendously compelling storytelling, and could only come from someone who has spent his life researching and working in the region.
Professor Williams exhibits an astonishing depth and breadth of knowledge throughout the entire book, and is generous with his explanations of the scientific evidence to the reader. The Sahara Desert is a powerful warning of what the entire world is facing and the conclusions the author reaches have far-reaching implications beyond north Africa, especially as climate change progresses ever more rapidly. This important book is highly recommended for everyone interested in environmental history or law, or prehistory, and students of any of the sciences will learn a lot from reading it.

FEMA's flood maps often miss dangerous flash flood risks, leaving homeowners unprepared
The deadly flash flooding in Texas on July 4, 2025, and destructive flash floods a week later in states including New Mexico, Vermont and Iowa are raising questions about the nation's flood maps and their ability to ensure that communities and homeowners can prepare for rising risks. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency's flood maps are intended to be the nation's primary tool for identifying flood risks. Originally developed in the 1970s to support the National Flood Insurance Program, these maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps, or FIRMs, are used to determine where flood insurance is required for federally backed mortgages, to inform local building codes and land-use decisions, and to guide flood plain management strategies. In theory, the maps enable homeowners, businesses and local officials to understand their flood risk and take appropriate steps to prepare and mitigate potential losses. But while FEMA has improved the accuracy and accessibility of the maps over time with better data, digital tools and community input, the maps still don't capture everything – including the changing climate. There are areas of the country that flood, some regularly, that don't show up on the maps as at risk. I study flood-risk mapping as a university-based researcher and at First Street, an organization created to quantify and communicate climate risk. In a 2023 assessment using newly modeled flood zones with climate-adjusted precipitation records, we found that more than twice as many properties across the country were at risk of a 100-year flood than the FEMA maps identified. Even in places where the FEMA maps identified a flood risk, we found that the federal mapping process, its overreliance on historical data, and political influence over the updating of maps can lead to maps that don't fully represent an area's risk. FEMA's maps are essential tools for identifying flood risks, but they have significant gaps that limit their effectiveness. One major limitation is that they don't consider flooding driven by intense bursts of rain. The maps primarily focus on river channels and coastal flooding, largely excluding the risk of flash flooding, particularly along smaller waterways such as streams, creeks and tributaries. This limitation has become more important in recent years due to climate change. Rising global temperatures can result in more frequent extreme downpours, leaving more areas vulnerable to flooding, yet unmapped by FEMA. For example, when flooding from Hurricane Helene hit unmapped areas around Asheville, North Carolina, in 2024, it caused a huge amount of uninsured damage to properties. Even in areas that are mapped, like the Camp Mystic site in Kerr County, Texas, that was hit by a deadly flash flood on July 4, 2025, the maps may underestimate their risk because of a reliance on historic data and outdated risk assessments. Additionally, FEMA's mapping process is often shaped by political pressures. Local governments and developers sometimes fight to avoid high-risk designations to avoid insurance mandates or restrictions on development, leading to maps that may understate actual risks and leave residents unaware of their true exposure. An example is New York City's appeal of a 2015 FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps update. The delay in resolving the city's concerns has left it with maps that are roughly 20 years old, and the current mapping project is tied up in legal red tape. On average, it takes five to seven years to develop and implement a new FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map. As a result, many maps across the U.S. are significantly out of date, often failing to reflect current land use, urban development or evolving flood risks from extreme weather. This delay directly affects building codes and infrastructure planning, as local governments rely on these maps to guide construction standards, development approvals and flood mitigation projects. Ultimately, outdated maps can lead to underestimating flood risks and allowing vulnerable structures to be built in areas that face growing flood threats. New advances in satellite imaging, rainfall modeling and high-resolution lidar, which is similar to radar but uses light, make it possible to create faster, more accurate flood maps that capture risks from extreme rainfall and flash flooding. However, fully integrating these tools requires significant federal investment. Congress controls FEMA's mapping budget and sets the legal framework for how maps are created. For years, updating the flood maps has been an unpopular topic among many publicly elected officials, because new flood designations can trigger stricter building codes, higher insurance costs and development restrictions. In recent years, the rise of climate risk analytics models and private flood risk data have allowed the real estate, finance and insurance industries to rely less on FEMA's maps. These new models incorporate forward-looking climate data, including projections of extreme rainfall, sea-level rise and changing storm patterns – factors FEMA's maps generally exclude. Real estate portals like Zillow, Redfin, and now provide property-level flood risk scores that consider both historical flooding and future climate projections. The models they use identify risks for many properties that FEMA maps don't, highlighting hidden vulnerabilities in communities across the United States. Research shows that the availability, and accessibility, of climate data on these sites has started driving property-buying decisions that increasingly take climate change into account. As homebuyers understand more about a property's flood risks, that may shift the desirability of some locations over time. Those shifts will have implications for property valuations, community tax-revenue assessments, population migration patterns and a slew of other considerations. However, while these may feel like changes being brought on by new data, the risk was already there. What is changing is people's awareness. The federal government has an important role to play in ensuring that accurate risk assessments are available to communities and Americans everywhere. As better tools and models evolve for assessing risk evolve, FEMA's risk maps need to evolve, too. New report spotlights 'transformative' farming method to grow more with less: 'The results are significant'
A unique approach that combines solar energy with traditional farming practices is delivering remarkable results that might help to reshape agriculture forever. Off-grid solar technology now powers everything from irrigation pumps to grain mills on small farms, creating dual income streams that also boost food production, according to an article in ESI Africa. This dual innovation is helping to tackle one of the world's biggest challenges: feeding a growing population while protecting the planet's health. Global food demand could surge by over 50% by 2050, according to research published in Nature Food, straining already limited water and energy resources. Traditional farming often relies on expensive diesel generators and struggles without reliable power resources, especially in remote areas in Africa, where 240 million people face daily hunger, according to ESI Africa. With solar-powered energy, farmers install panels that generate clean electricity for things like pumping water, cooling crops, and processing grains — maximizing every acre's potential and creating multiple revenue resources along the way. The breakthrough came about from extensive collaboration between GOGLA and Water and Energy for Food across 15 African countries. Between November 2021 and July 2023, researchers worked directly with small farms to deploy solar irrigation systems, refrigeration units, and processing equipment. Organizations implemented a pay-as-you-go structure that allows farmers to purchase solar technology via small monthly payments. "The results are significant and indicative of the transformative effects off-grid energy could have on agriculture," according to the piece. The initiative benefited 3.6 million people and helped grow 6.8 million tons of food. Farmers saved 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours of energy, reducing water consumption by 10.8 billion liters. The initiative also prevented 1.5 million tons of harmful carbon pollution from entering the atmosphere. Every participating company increased its revenue, with eight businesses expanding distribution to serve new regions. $13.7 million was also raised in additional funding. Researcher discovers rare ocean phenomenon serving as unlikely ally to reefs: 'Could offer a blueprint'
A Queensland University of Technology researcher in Australia discovered an ocean phenomenon that could save coral reefs despite the changing climate, the university shared via Marine scientist Dr. Catherine Kim documented Pyrosoma atlanticum — pyrosomes, a strange sea creature made up of a colony of tiny plankton — moving in swarms along the northern Australian coast, where coral can actively feed on them. She published the study in the journal Ecology to share a mechanism that could make coral reefs more resistant to climate change. Dr. Kim studied the Coral Triangle within the young nation of Timor-Leste, a Southeast Asia/Pacific biodiversity hot spot. She found that corals can be more opportunistic than vulnerable and digest large plankton when given the opportunity. She observed a pyrosome bloom driven by a major ocean current transporting large amounts of water through the Indonesian seas from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian. This flow provides extensive water movement to regulate water temperatures and deliver cooler waters filled with nutrients during critical coral growth times. "Timor-Leste's reefs could offer a blueprint for coral resilience in a warming world," Dr. Kim said. This research finding is encouraging because it offers hope for coral reefs struggling because of our extreme weather patterns and our steadily warming planet. Coral reefs face many environmental challenges because of the prevalence of microplastics and the impacts of human drilling for dirty energy sources. Fortunately, many scientists have been studying the issues affecting our world's coral reefs and finding ways to save future coral populations. Satellite mapping, for example, can be useful for monitoring coral reefs and protecting these fragile marine ecosystems. From this Australian study, scientists can gain a better understanding of how ocean currents and food availability create coral reef refuges. High-energy prey help offset the stress coral reefs face in order to survive and grow faster with more efficient photosynthesis. Observing these effects can help researchers identify which reefs have more readily available food and which need more attention because of poor resilience.
