Lululemon sues Costco for selling alleged dupes of its products
A lawsuit filed in a California court recently alleges Costco sells dupes of Lululemon's Scuba hoodies and sweatshirts, Define jackets and ABC pants.
Some of the alleged fakes Vancouver-based Lululemon identified are sold under Costco's private label Kirkland, but others are made by manufacturers Danskin, Jockey and Spyder.
"Some customers incorrectly believe these infringing products are authentic Lululemon apparel while still other customers specifically purchase the infringing products because they are difficult to distinguish from authentic Lululemon products, particularly for downstream purchasers or observers," the lawsuit says.
Lululemon alleges these scenarios take advantage of patents it holds, as well as the reputation and goodwill it has built with customers.
In its 49-page court filing, Lululemon says it tried to address the dupes by sending Costco cease and desist letters but is now asking a court to step in.
Lululemon has requested the matter be heard by a jury trial, which it wants to order Costco to cease manufacturing, importing, marketing and selling the alleged dupes.
It also wants the Washington-based retailer to remove any instances where it was advertising alleged dupes online or in print and is asking the court to require Costco to cover any lost profits Lululemon incurred from the products.
Costco did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It has yet to file a response to Lululemon's lawsuit.
Dupes have become incredibly popular in recent years as shoppers looked to cope with inflation and a global trade war by seeking products mimicking the originals made by name brands.
The phenomenon has gained traction online in particular, with social media accounts sharing the best dupes they've found.
While knock-off cosmetics are especially popular, Lululemon has also become a target because it sells its athletic wear at higher prices, which some customers find unattainable.
The lawsuit comes weeks after Lululemon said it would try to weather new and possibly incoming tariffs with price increases that will be "modest in nature" and applied only to a "small" portion of its products.
The brand has been working to bounce back from a lack of newness that disappointed consumers last year and earlier this year.
Newness — how fresh a brand's products and styles appear to consumers — is one of the key ways retailers draw in customers.

B.C. is easing rules on upfront costs for homebuilders to spur project construction
The British Columbia government is loosening the rules for payment of development fees in a bid to jump start home construction that has been hampered by upfront costs. Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon says among the biggest changes will be more flexible and extended payment timelines for homebuilders, so instead of paying development fees up front, they will pay 25 per cent at permit approval and 75 per cent when the building is occupied. Developers will also have four years, rather than two, to pay the charges, in rule changes that Kahlon says are needed because the current market conditions have stalled projects in the province. While some municipalities want letters of credit from a bank as a promise the work will be done, that can restrict a developer's access to credit, so the government will also change the regulations provincewide to allow for the financial guarantee of on-demand surety bonds. Kahlon says the rule changes could mean the difference between some housing projects moving ahead or not happening at all, due to high construction costs and interest rates that create financial burden for builders. Anne McMullin, president of the Urban Development Institute, says the requirement to pay development fees upfront has become increasingly onerous for builders, especially as fees rise and access to capital tightens. 'By shifting payment to occupancy, the provincial government is enabling more projects to move forward,' she told a news conference on Wednesday. In June, Vancouver-based Wesgroup Properties president Beau Jarvis said in a post on social media that the company had to lay off employees in what was a reflection of the broader realities facing the industry, with housing projects across the country being cancelled or delayed because they are no longer viable. Jarvis said they were also delivering homes that people couldn't afford to purchase. 'I will say it again — This is a cost-of-delivery crisis,' he said on LinkedIn. Kahlon said those were exactly the type of concerns for homebuilding that the B.C. government is trying to address. 'It means housing will be built faster and cheaper in our communities,' Kahlon said. 'And these kind of solutions sound maybe not as grand, but they are significant in the sense that they will make the difference between projects happening and projects not happening.' Carbon Credits What They Are, Who's Buying, And Why You Should Care
The concept of carbon credits. carbon credit trading etc. getty Carbon credits have become a buzzword in the fight against climate change but behind the jargon lies a multi-billion-dollar mechanism which is reshaping how companies, individuals and countries account for emissions. At its simplest, one carbon credit equals one metric ton of carbon dioxide that is either removed from the atmosphere or prevented from being emitted. Companies, especially those with net-zero targets often purchase these credits to offset emissions that they are unable to eliminate internally. When it comes to carbon credits, there are two main markets, the compliance market and the voluntary markets. Compliance markets are regulated systems where governments require companies to cap or offset their emissions. The most prominent example is the European Union's Emissions Trading System, the world's largest carbon market. While the United States does not have a national carbon credit system system, several state-level compliance markets exist, most notably California's Cap-and-Trade Program and the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which includes 11 northeastern states. These markets place legally binding limits on emissions and allow companies to trade allowances or buy approved carbon credits to stay within regulatory thresholds. As it relates to voluntary carbon markets, they allow companies and individuals to buy carbon credits outside of legal requirements, often to meet net-zero goals or enhance ESG credentials. Unlike compliance markets, participation is optional, but interest is growing. Credits are issued by independent registries but the market has faced criticism for inconsistent standards, greenwashing, and questionable impact. Integrity is now the currency of trust. According to a 2023 report by Boston Consulting Group, the voluntary carbon market surged past $2 billion in 2021, four times its 2020 value, and could grow to $10 to $40 billion by 2030 as demand accelerates. A 2025 Carbon Market Watch report highlighted that, Shell was the largest buyer of carbon credits in 2024, a year when fossil fuel companies dominated the voluntary market. Among the top 10 buyers with disclosed data, eight came from high-emission industries such as energy, aviation and automotive, raising concerns that offsets are being used to project climate leadership while core operations remain unchanged. Carbon credits are generated from a range of climate projects, but not all deliver the same environmental value. Some remove carbon already in the atmosphere, while others aim to prevent new emissions. The effectiveness, permanence, and co-benefits of each project type can vary widely, which is why understanding the source of a credit is critical. Offsets may stem from: Renewable energy investments Reforestation and avoided deforestation Soil carbon and regenerative agriculture Methane capture from landfills or livestock Efficient cookstove distribution in developing regions Among these, projects like clean cookstove distribution, biochar, and mangrove restoration are increasingly recognized for their strong climate impact, verifiability, and co-benefits, while others such as certain large-scale forestry or legacy renewable projects require closer scrutiny. Registries such as Verra, Gold Standard, and the American Carbon Registry certify these projects, but the market has also faced criticism, particularly over phantom credits where some offsets do not deliver any real climate benefit. When it comes to the Caribbean, islands like Jamaica, must engage in this market strategically. With forestry potential and renewable energy expansion goals, the region stands to benefit both environmentally and economically if proper governance and community inclusion are prioritized. As the carbon credit market expands, so does the responsibility to ensure that climate action is both credible and effective. For companies, governments, the path forward requires transparency, strong verification, and a focus on projects that deliver measurable environmental and social value. Offsets alone will not solve the climate crisis, but when backed by integrity and paired with real emissions reductions, they can play a meaningful role.
