Athletic Club's Yeray Lopez blames alopecia medicine for failed drugs test
The 30-year-old failed a doping test after Bilbao's 3-0 loss to Manchester United at the San Mames in the Europa League semi-finals on 1 May.
He said he had been taking medicine as part of treatment against hair loss in the years since overcoming testicular cancer, which he had been diagnosed with in 2016.
In a social media post, he added that he 'could not believe' the result, 'given that I have never consumed prohibited substances in my life'.
'After studying the case, we have established that I tested positive because I unintentionally took a hair loss prevention medicine containing a banned substance,' Alvarez said.
'The disciplinary procedure is currently under investigation and subject to confidentiality, so I am provisionally suspended and am not authorised to make any further public statements.
' very much regret this situation but, with the support of the club, I am working on my defence in the belief that I will be able to return to the field of play as soon as possible.'
Alvarez, who joined the club in 2014 and has made 257 appearances since, was a key part of the Bilbao side that finished fourth in La Liga last season and qualified for the 2025/26 Champions League.
The club released its own statement in response to the news, saying that it is 'not authorised to make any additional statements about this issue'.
'Athletic Club wants to express its full support for Yeray Alvarez at this time and its complete confidence in the bodies charged with resolving the case'.
"Once the proceedings are concluded, Yeray Alvarez and Athletic Club will offer all the pertinent and necessary explanations,' added the statement.

Man on a mission Tom Curry fuelled by a sense of grievance as Lions star answers critics in style with bruising, brilliant display against Australia
Tom Curry was driven by a mood of simmering defiance to inspire the Lions to victory, as England's back-row hit man justified his inclusion in the starting XV in emphatic fashion. The 27-year-old flanker lived up to his billing as a 'machine' by head coach Andy Farrell, with a series of big shots in defence, relentless work-rate and commitment, a close-range try and an assist. He touched down just before half-time, then after the break gave a demonstration of his all-court class, juggling the ball to steal an over-thrown lineout then off-loading, before running hard to be in position to deliver the perfectly-timed, decisive pass to send Dan Sheehan over in the corner. Having smashed himself to a near standstill in the cause, Curry had every right to be elated but he was in a tetchy mood as he gave a post-match interview. It became apparent that within the Lions squad, it was perceived that he had been harshly criticised in the build-up to this series opener — and he did little to hide his irritation. Curry had not appeared to perform as well in the tour matches as other contenders for the No 7 shirt, notably Wales captain Jac Morgan. So when he was selected, it was interpreted as a vote for pedigree over form. Aggrieved Welsh fans bemoaned the inclusion of the Englishman over their sole remaining representative. Of course, as someone with a track record of delivering when it matters most, that is exactly what Curry did. It became apparent that proving a point had been motivation for a man who has credit in the bank, having started all three Lions Tests against South Africa in 2021. This was the initial interview sequence… 'Tom, how do you feel? Did you enjoy that?' 'Yeah, good.' 'What's the mood of the team like after dominating, before Australia fought back?' There were brief flickers of more extensive chat, as Curry discussed how the Wallabies will respond next week in Melbourne, about how the Lions executed their gameplan with 'passion' and how he savoured the support of the vast numbers of Lions fans and his visiting family. But the irritation and the curt answers kept resurfacing. Farrell had already revealed how the Lions had harnessed what is always termed the 'outside noise' to galvanise them — notably Curry and fellow flanker and star performer, Tadhg Beirne. 'I read all that,' said the head coach, in reference to coverage of the pair's selection for the first Test. 'It was interesting, wasn't it?' Giving his verdict on how they played, he added: 'Immense, absolutely immense. 'Tom Curry put in some really nice shots defensively and Tadhg Beirne got a turnover very early doors and set the tone really.' On Curry, he added: 'For those who know him and his character, that was always going to happen.' It will all be different now. It will be wall-to-wall praise and acclaim. Hitting the heights next week will require different motivational tools, but Curry is sure to find them. It wasn't meant to end like this for Marcus Rashford at Man United but Barcelona move could relight the fire, writes CHRIS WHEELER
It has been a rather ridiculous situation at Carrington over the last two weeks. No sooner has Ruben Amorim driven out of Manchester United 's training ground than Marcus Rashford has pulled in. Banished. Ostracised. The biggest name in the so-called 'bomb squad'. It wasn't meant to end like this. Rashford and United. Amorim and Rashford. But it has been clear for some time that there was no way back. When Rashford said in December – five days after his last appearance for United in Plzen – that he was 'ready for a new challenge and the next steps' in his career. And when Amorim astonishingly claimed at Fulham in January that he would rather pick his 63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital than play Rashford. A loan move to Aston Villa until the end of the season suited all parties, but Rashford always had his heart set on Barcelona. No sooner has Amorim driven out of the training ground than Rashford has pulled in After training in Marbella this summer, his return to Carrington was always going to be awkward and so it proved. Within hours of the Rashford camp indicating that he was ready to play a full part in pre-season, United countered by giving him time off to explore a move away from Old Trafford as one of five players who would no longer train with the first-team squad. So it began, the game of peekaboo with Amorim and what was described as a 'co-ordinated' return – code for making sure the boss has gone before coming into work. Rashford has taken up the option to report for training out of hours more than the other outcasts, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. But there is something curious about a club desperate for goals spending £130million on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo while Rashford, Garnacho, Sancho and Antony train in exile; four attackers with a combined value of £330millon at their peak. No story has felt more regrettable than Rashford's. The boyhood United fan who grew up to become a diamond of the academy and the club's second-highest earner on £315,000-a-week. Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that he lost his way at United. Lost his form and, at times it seemed, his love for the game. This should be a period of his career when he is flying, not training on his own, at odds with his coach and looking for an escape from the club that has been his home for nearly two decades except for a few months on loan at Aston Villa. His short spell in the Midlands saw a rejuvenated Rashford. One with a point to prove to Amorim and new England boss Thomas Tuchel, earning an international recall. And this is the good news. Rashford doesn't turn 28 until the end of October. He is still a young man, coming into his prime years as an attacker. There is still time for him to realise his huge potential. Barcelona don't sign mediocre players and if they can relight the fire in Rashford and sign him for £40m next summer, it will be an absolute snip. In trying to take a swipe at Rashford earlier this week, another former United No.10, Teddy Sheringham, actually made a very pertinent point. 'From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that's a step up he hasn't deserved,' said Sheringham rather sniffily. Barca are a step up from United right now. The Nou Camp is a huge stage and Rashford has a massive opportunity to get his career back on track playing alongside the likes of Lamine Yamal and regain his England place on a more regular basis ahead of next year's World Cup. Who knows, if Amorim cannot revive United's fortunes, the next manager might well find use for a player like Rashford next summer. There's everything to play for.
