Yahoo12-04-2025
The Writers Guild of America West on Friday publicly announced disciplinary action against six members for alleged unauthorized work during the union's 2023 strike, as well as one additional member for an alleged violation of the guild's constitution.
Four of those disciplined, which the WGAW named in a memo to members today, are appealing the decision.

Julie Bush, Tim Doyle, Edward Drake and Roma Roth are all pushing back against the union board's disciplinary rulings, which were determined via hearings before five-member trial juries. Bush, Drake and Roth are accused of writing during the strike.
Bush, whose credited as a consulting producer on Manhunt, has been suspended from the guild until next year and has been barred for life from holding non-elected guild office after being found guilty of violating Working Rule 8 and writing for a non-signatory company during the strike. Drake was expelled for allegedly writing during the strike and 'failing to cooperate' with the Strike Rules Compliance Committee. Roth, an executive producer of Sullivan's Crossing and Virgin River, has also been expelled for writing for a non-signatory company during the strike.
Last Man Standing showrunner Doyle's discipline is in regards to a Facebook post that the union called 'racist and offensive depiction of a lynching.' Deadline previously reported on this matter, when Doyle was censured last year.
Deadline has reached out to Bush, Drake and Roth for comment. Representatives for Doyle could not be reached.
Under guild rules, disciplined members are offered the opportunity to appeal the board's decision to the membership at large. Members in good standing will vote to decide whether to uphold the disciplinary action or adopt 'an alternative action proposed by the appellant,' as the guild states.
WGAW members will be able to vote on the four appeals online from 10 a.m. PT on May 6 until 2 p.m. PT on May 9.

Song Young-kyu, South Korean movie and TV star, found dead at 55: Reports

Song Young-kyu, a South Korean actor best known for his role as Chief Choi in 2019's South Korean box office hit "Extreme Job," has reportedly died. He was 55. An acquaintance found Young-kyu unresponsive inside a parked car the morning of Aug. 4, Variety and South Korean publication Yonhap News report. South Korean authorities do not suspect foul play and no suicide note was found, according to the outlets. Young-kyu, who was found south of Seoul in the city of Yongin, had recently been the subject of scandal when he was caught in a drunk driving incident in the same city in June, Deadline and Variety reported. The incident led to his removal from several mid-project stage and television productions. A staple in South Korean cinema, Young-kyu made his acting debut in 1994, launching a robust career that spanned both film and TV. Appearing in popular series like 2022's "Narco-Saints," a popular Korean Netflix original series, and Disney+'s "Big Bet," he was a reliable supporting actor, bringing both experience and consistency. Young-kyu was best known, though, for his role as Chief Choi in the action-comedy blockbuster "Extreme Job." In it, he appears as the head of a detective squad investigating narcotics on the low and running a fried chicken restaurant as a front. He appeared in the film alongside actors Ryu Seung-ryong, Lee Hanee and Jin Seon-kyu. It was a major box office success in the country and introduced a wider set of audiences to Youn-kyu's steady and masterful onscreen presence.

Nancy Meyers blindsided by news of The Holiday limited series

On Friday, editors at Deadline reported that producers at Apple TV+ are working on a TV show inspired by the 2006 romantic comedy. Meyers wrote, produced, and directed the film. Following the announcement, the filmmaker took to Instagram Stories to share her reaction. "News to me," she wrote, adding a thinking face emoji. "Imagine my surprise when I opened Instagram and this was the first post I saw." Meyers didn't elaborate further. Representatives for Apple TV+ have not yet responded to the 75-year-old's comments. The Holiday follows Iris (Kate Winslet), a London-based columnist, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), a movie trailer editor in Los Angeles.
