I know where my car shines on fast rallies... now it's up to me to commit more and lift bar: Josh McErlean
A solid weekend's work was capped off by Kilrea man McErlean once again getting the better of the more experienced Gregoire Munster in the second of the three works-supported Pumas.
The only blot in his copybook came on Saturday's 10.9-mile 'Kanepi' test when the 26-year-old failed to scrub off enough speed as he approached a junction and went off the road into a ditch. Thankfully, quick-thinking – and a heavy right foot – spared his blushes.
'It was a super-fast rally and really enjoyable to drive, and okay, although we were cleaning the road for most of it on the Saturday and Sunday, we now have our brain dialled into these fast roads, how the car works and how and where we can commit,' said McErlean, who now turns his attention to Rally Finland, which will run from July 31 to August 3.
'I think overall, we can be happy with our pace compared to Gregoire, and we now have a quick turnaround for the next round in Finland where we hope we can step it up again.
'We have the experience now – we have done a fast rally in a Rally1 car – so it is all good preparation.
'We did not make any big mistakes, which is good, and that will only help our confidence going to Finland – a place where, if you are low on confidence, it is not ideal. The feeling is okay. Now, we just have to start committing more and trusting the process.'
McErlean hopes his performance in the Baltic state over the course of the gravel test is a sign he has got his maiden Rally1 campaign back on track after consecutive opening-day retirements at Rally Italia Sardegna and Acropolis Rally Greece respectively.
'It was nice to settle down a bit after the last two rallies where a couple of mistakes kept us out of the points. It is definitely nice to make it to the finish here in Estonia,' he added.
Oliver Solberg, on his Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 debut, stunned the WRC with a sensational victory.
Despite only being notified of the drive a fortnight previously – and having had the benefit of limited pre-event testing – the 23-year-old secured a breakthrough win by 25.2 seconds.

Star Wars-style FLYING ‘speeder bike' can zoom around skies at over 60mph – and you can pre-order your own in days

The company also stresses that no CGI or artificial intelligence (AI) has been used to enhance the footage. That means the days of bikes and cars zooming above our heads is nearly here - with heavy emphasis on the 'nearly'. The flying bike, from Poland-based startup Volonaut, uses redundant jet turbines to beam a solo passenger through the sky at up to 63mph (102kmph). Riders can fly through tight areas with ease due to its lack of spinning propellers, according to Volonaut. Thanks to carbon fiber materials and 3D printing, the Airbike is seven times lighter than a typical motorcycle, Volonaut added. The video shows a test pilot heavily cladded in protective gear riding a bike that has so far only existed in sci-fi movies. The aircraft is the brainchild of Polish inventor Tomasz Patan, who is also behind the Jetson One - a type of futuristic air buggy. 5 While Patan's company Jetson continues works on a £68,000 flying car, his second firm Volonaut is working on a separate hoverbike. The flight was "exceptionally smooth", according to the startup, "with no vibrations and great degree of control". Volonaut has said the bike will be available for pre-order on 1 August. However, the company has not mentioned a manufacturing or distribution timeline. It has also remained tight-lipped as to the price tag. Therefore, it's unclear just how much money Airbike hopefuls will have to part with - or when the aircraft will arrive at their doorstep if they do. While Volonaut's Airbike has definitely captured interest in personal VTOL innovations, it is interesting to note that, as of this writing, the company has not filed patents.

Jalmaro Calvin signs for St Mirren with more new faces on cards
The Jamaican winger, who played with Richard King at Cavalier, has joined his countryman in Paisley after he put pen to paper on a two-year deal. The welcome mat has been rolled out at St Mirren for Jalmaro Calvin as he became the club's ninth summer signing. The Jamaican international is reunited with team-mate Richard King just weeks after he departed the island's Premier League outfit Cavalier. The pacy winger has penned a two-year deal at the SMiSA Stadium with the club holding an option to extend terms for a further year. While at the Kingston-based club, Calvin notched 39 goals in 101 appearances and also featured in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Saints boss Stephen Robinson insists Calvin was someone that always caught the club's eye every time they were scouting King. He said: 'Jalmaro was a player that kept coming up every time we looked at Richard. We've built up a really good relationship with Cavalier and their owner Rudolph Speid. 'Jalmaro has real pace and energy. He can play wide and he can play through the middle.' The Northern Irishman has outlined his vision for Calvin while comparing him to a former Saints favourite. He added: 'We need to build him up. He's a project for us in terms of getting him used to the Scottish game and the physicality but his electric pace will give us something that we don't have in the squad at this time. He reminds me of Toyosi Olusanya in terms of that raw pace that he can offer us in the wide areas.' Calvin's capture is the latest addition and follows Ryan Mullen, Liam Donnelly, Jayden Richardson, Richard King, Tunmise Sobowale and Malik Dijksteel signing on. Killian Phillips and Roland Idowu turned loan deals from Crystal Palace and Shrewsbury Town, respectively, into permanent moves. Jalmaro will wear the number 17 shirt this season while fellow new signing Sobowale has been assigned number 19. And it doesn't look like business is done for Saints with former Livingston and current Wycombe Wanderers keeper Shamal George a target. The 27-year-old custodian has only made five appearances for the Chairboys since joining in August 2024 and may be brought in to challenge Peter Urminsky and Mullen for the No 1 jersey.
