I was disrespected at temple: Selvaperunthagai
The DMK allies called for action against HR&CE officials while minister P K Sekarbabu visited the Congress leader and assured action. "The minister expressed regret for the incident," Selvaperunthagai said.
The controversy related to the consecration ceremony of the temple, which took place after 17 years. Former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundarajan, Selvaperunthagai, and DMK (Anna Nagar) MLA M K Mohan were among those in attendance.
Selvaperunthagai said he wasn't treated with the respect an elected representative deserved. "It is customary for the elected representatives to flag off the temple consecration ceremony by standing on top of the Temple Vimana, and it happens that way in all temple festivals.
But during this festival, the HR&CE officials flagged it off. Similarly, there was no one to even guide me and take me to the appropriate places.
None of the protocols were followed," he told TOI.
Sources in the HR&CE department said officials concerned submitted a report to the higher-ups saying the Congress leader arrived late and missed the prayers, despite priests waiting for him for 30 minutes. Selvaperunthagai denied these accusations. "I was asked to come at 8.30am, and I reached the temple at 8.15am. I was waiting in the temple storeroom to participate in the prayers, but there was no one there to accompany me because of which I had to leave.
Some have an ancient mindset."

DMK allies including CPI, CPM, and VCK condemned the treatment, and demanded action against the officials. CPI state secretary R Mutharasan said, "This is against social justice, and stringent action should be taken against officials who are responsible for the incident." CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said Selvaperunthagai's caste (SC), was the reason for the alleged discrimination. VCK MP D Ravikumar called for abolition of discrimination in temples.

Tamil Nadu HR&CE minister defends use of temple funds for education amid EPS criticism
CHENNAI: Hitting back at AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) for criticising the use of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department funds to build educational institutions, Tamil Nadu HR&CE Minister P. K. Sekarbabu on Tuesday accused the opposition leader of being "steeped in ignorance" and lacking awareness of historical precedents. Sekarbabu's sharp response came after Palaniswami, while addressing a public meeting in Coimbatore during his ongoing state-wide campaign 'Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom', questioned the DMK government's move to construct colleges using temple donations. "There is nothing wrong in building colleges," Palaniswami said from his campaign vehicle, "but the AIADMK government did it using its own funds, not the offerings of devotees." Countering this, Sekarbabu stated that several educational institutions have already been successfully established using HR&CE funds. "What is wrong with building colleges for the welfare of students?" he asked, defending the initiative and ridiculing Palaniswami's comments. "His remarks only expose his ignorance about the functioning of the HR&CE department and its long-standing tradition of using temple resources for public good." The HR&CE Minister also pointed out that temples under the department's control have always been central to community development, including in the areas of education and healthcare. Meanwhile, parents of students from Arulmigu Sri Kapaleeswarar Arts and Science College in Chief Minister M. K. Stalin's Kolathur constituency staged a protest condemning Palaniswami's criticism. Holding placards that read "It is not wrong to build colleges using temple funds," the parents gathered on the college premises and raised slogans expressing support for the government's initiative. The Kolathur-based college, one of several institutions built using HR&CE funds, currently has over 750 students enrolled across five academic streams. The HR&CE minister also said that the protest from the parent community reflects a growing public endorsement of the HR&CE department's efforts to utilise temple resources for expanding educational access, especially in areas where more institutions were required. South Indians run dance bars, they should not be awarded food supply contracts in Maharashtra, says controversial Shiv Sena MLA
MUMBAI: Shiv Sena MLA representing Buldhana assembly segment, Sanjay Gaikwad has stirred a fresh controversy, this time, by targeting South Indians. He said on Thursday that South Indians "run dance bars and ladies bars" hence they should not be awarded food supply contracts in Maharashtra. "Why was a contractor named Shetty given the contract? Give it to a Marathi person. They know what we eat and will give us good quality food. South Indians run dance bars, ladies bars and spoil Maharashtra's culture. They have corrupted our children. How will they serve good food?" Gaikwad, the Maharahtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena MLA said. On Tuesday evening, furious at being served "rotten" dal and rice, Sanjay Gaikwad assaulted a canteen staffer at the MLAs' hostel in Colaba and manhandled another. A video of Gaikwad hitting and punching the canteen staffer had gone viral on Wednesday drawing condemnation from the opposition. Sanjay Gaikwad is second time MLA from Buldhan state assembly constituency in Maharashtra. Gaikwad got elected in 2019 against the Congress candidate Harshvardhan Sapkal who is presently president of Maharashtra Congress party. In 2024, Gaikwad won the state assembly elections against Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Jayshree Shelke by 841 votes in Buldhana where Prakash Ambedkar led Vanchit Aghadi candidate bagged 7146 votes. In the past too, Gaikwad had stoked several controversies. In September 2024, he announced a reward of Rs 11 lakh for chopping Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's tongue for comments made during his US visit on reservation system. An FIR was registered against Gaikwad following his announcement.

MLA In 'Slap' Video Compared Voters, Prostitutes, Claimed He Killed Tiger
Mumbai: Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad, who made headlines for a viral video of him slapping and punching a canteen staff in Mumbai over food quality, has a knack for making controversial remarks. The MLA from Buldhana in Maharashtra has earlier offered an award for chopping off Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's tongue. He has also claimed that he killed a tiger and wears its tooth around his neck. In January this year, he compared voters and prostitutes. On January 5, a month after his second Assembly poll victory by a slim margin, Mr Gaikwad alleged that people were selling their votes for alcohol, mutton and cash. "Voters selling out for daru (liquor), mutton and two thousand (rupees) are worse than prostitutes," he said. The video went viral and the lawmaker was criticised on social media, but the Eknath Shinde-led party took no action. Earlier, in September last year, the Sena MLA offered a reward of Rs 11 lakh to anyone who chops off Mr Gandhi's tongue. This came amid the row over Rahul Gandhi's comments on the reservation system. During an interaction at a US university, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha was asked about the reservation system. "We will think of scrapping reservations when India is a fair place and India is not a fair place," he had said. Speaking to the media soon after, Mr Gaikwad said, "While he was abroad, Rahul Gandhi said that he wanted to finish off the reservation system in India. This has exposed the true face of the Congress. I will reward anyone who cuts off Rahul Gandhi's tongue with Rs 11 lakh." This is not all. The legislator was the talking point after a video showing a policeman washing his car went viral. Sanjay Gaikwad later claimed that the policeman cleaned the vehicle voluntarily after he vomited inside it. In February last year, the MLA claimed he had hunted a tiger in 1987 and wears its tooth around his neck. Thereafter, he was charged under the Wildlife Protection Act. In his latest show of highhandedness, Sanjay Gaikwad assaulted a staff member at the MLA canteen in Mumbai's Churchgate, hitting him on the face and punching him so hard that he fell on the floor. The MLA was upset over the quality of Dal served to him. When NDTV approached the MLA, he said the dal was "rotten". "I had asked for dal, rice and two chapatis. I started eating and threw up after a few morsels. I started feeling unwell. I went to the canteen. I did not even change. I went to the canteen and asked them to smell it and then said it's very bad. I called the manager, and he said it was not fit to eat. Over the past several years, I have told them to give me fresh food. Their chicken and egg stocks are days old. They are playing with the health of thousands of people every day. And when people complain, they don't listen," he said. The MLA's assault of the canteen staff has drawn criticism from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The MLA is, however, unapologetic. He has now drawn a language connection to justify his actions, saying Marathis would have never shown laxity in serving fresh food if they were allowed to run the canteen at the MLAs' hostel in Mumbai. "These Shettys have been playing with our lives for a long time. Today, they tried to play with my life. My stomach isn't good and I have been disturbed over it for the last 20 years. The slightest mistake can land me up with a stomach ache," he said in remarks that are significant against the backdrop of the raging language row in Maharashtra.
