UFC Fight Night: Whittaker, De Ridder out on statement missions in Abu Dhabi

KUUMAR SHYAM (ABU DHABI)UFC Fight Night returns to Abu Dhabi with a compelling main event between former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and decorated Dutch grappler Reinier de Ridder when they clash this Saturday. The co-main event will see former bantamweight titleholder Petr Yan go up against a surging Marcus McGhee.
Whittaker enters the main event with renewed focus after a period of recovery and reflection following his submission loss to Khamzat Chimaev in late 2024. That bout left him with a damaged jaw and a long dental rehabilitation, but he returns with fresh determination and a well-tested resolve. 'Better than ever, and all paid for by Dana [White, the UFC President] as it was a work injury,' said Whittaker with a wry smile before the open workouts on Thursday. Robert Whittaker
In his way is a man who has been lapping up every opportunity in the past year, having competed in the UAE Warriors around this time when he got the UFC call-up. 'It has been a crazy ride, but I am happy ... also that whoever the UFC put in front of me, I have won even though I wasn't expected to. Even now, Whittaker may have lost but he is a legend of the game and been here so long, but I fancy my chances,' the Dutchman said, referring to his opponent's loss to Chimaev.Whittaker clarified that his jaw wasn't broken as reported earlier. 'My teeth got moved in ... they were crappy teeth, so I just got rid of them,' he said. Reflecting on his recovery, he added: 'I spent some time with the family… focused on some other projects… and worked on some new skills.' Those skills will have been honed for De Ridder, said a tough-talking Whittaker. 'He hasn't fought anyone like me. I will be landing my mitts on him with my striking.'Three of the biggest bouts over the next two months are in the middleweight division and it all kicks off with De Ridder's main event with Whittaker. And De Ridder recognises that he's in a good position because the only fighters to beat Whittaker in the past decade have gone onto either win championships or immediately fight for the title.
De Ridder earlier said his strategy will not be based on Whittaker's fight with Chimaev: 'I won't change my approach or pace – I think that's just kind of what I do. I'll put it all on him.' Reinier de Ridder
The co-main fight between Yan and McGhee is also a statement fight of sorts, which will either reaffirm Yan's comeback or fuel McGhee's surprise ascent like De Ridder.Though less experienced in five-round fights, McGhee has shown he can maintain output and composure over three intense rounds. This fight will test the American's ability, though, to adjust to Yan's pace and potentially deal with an underused but highly effective wrestling style if the striking exchanges do not favour the Russian.Yan said he was confident. 'I am hoping for that… with a competent win this Saturday, I'll make sure to cement my place as the next contender. I think it's the right thing to do.'A humble McGhee, meanwhile, admitted to the underdog status. 'How could you not be surprised?' he said when offered the fight against Yan on short notice, adding: 'Honestly anything can happen in this game.'The undercard also features several matchups with divisional implications. Undefeated featherweight contender Movsar Evloev takes on Aaron Pico in what could be a breakout fight for the winner.Shara Magomedov returns in a middleweight clash against Marc-André Barriault, aiming to rebound from a rare defeat earlier this year. Fan-favourite Bryce Mitchell debuts at bantamweight against Said Nurmagomedov, promising an unpredictable stylistic clash between wrestling-heavy approaches and Dagestani precision.

Pegula sent packing, Swiatek through at Canadian Open

Twice defending champion Jessica Pegula crashed out of the Canadian Open after losing to Anastasija Sevastova 3-6 6-4 6-1 in the third round on Friday, while six-times major winner Iga Swiatek marched on with a dominant 6-2 6-2 win over Eva Lys. The 35-year-old Sevastova, ranked 386 in the world, will next face four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, who took out Latvian 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-2 6-4. "I don't know," Sevastova said after upsetting third seed Pegula. "Somehow, I was down 2-0 in the second set and started to play better and better. Third set, I played really good. Just trying to stay on the court as long as possible." Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova, seeded fifth in Montreal, carved out a comfortable win over Emma Raducanu, beating the 2021 U.S. Open champion 6-2 6-1. Anisimova's win over Raducanu is her first, having lost their previous two encounters. She will next face Ukrainian 10th seed Elina Svitolina. In the men's draw, American second seed Taylor Fritz made light work of local hope Gabriel Diallo, beating the 27th seed 6-4 6-2. Fritz, who is eyeing a third title of the season after triumphs in Eastbourne and Stuttgart, will next take on Czech 19th seed Jiri Lehecka. "Even the games that I didn't serve my best in, I felt like I backed it up really well from the baseline, so I'm happy with that," Fritz said. American fourth seed Ben Shelton, however, was made to work hard by countryman Brandon Nakashima before managing a 6-7(8) 6-2 7-6(5) win. "It was back and forth," Shelton said. "There were a lot of huge moments, like being able to break back after getting broken in my first service game of the third set. I feel like I showed a lot of perseverance tonight." Next up for Shelton is Italian 13th seed Flavio Cobolli.

McLaren's Norris completes ‘double top' at Hungarian GP practice

Lando Norris completed a commanding 'double top' on Friday with the fastest times ahead of McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in practice at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The 25-year-old Briton, who is 16 points behind Piastri in the drivers' title race, clocked a best lap in one minute and 15.624 seconds to outpace the Australian by 0.291 seconds after a tense second session at the Hungaroring circuit. Charles Leclerc was third for Ferrari, adrift by nearly four-tenths, ahead of the Aston Martins of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso, and Lewis Hamilton in the second Ferrari. George Russell was seventh for Mercedes ahead of Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar, Yuki Tsunoda of Red Bull and Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes. All this left four-time champion Max Verstappen, grumbling throughout about his car's poor balance and performance, down in 14th place, 1.167 seconds off the pace and three tenths adrift of his team-mate. Lando Norris of Britain prepares for the second free practice. AP To make matters worse for the Dutchman, who described his car as 'undriveable', he faced a likely investigation into his disposal of a cloth towel from his cockpit during the session. From the start, it was clear that the duelling McLaren title protagonists were in no mood to take the session lightly as they traded best laps and, in a final late incident, ran close to making contact as Norris locked up and Piastri swept past him around Turn One. On a bright, dry afternoon, Nico Hulkenberg - who had missed the first session to give reserve driver Paul Aron an outing for Sauber - was first out and within five minutes ran wide and scattered gravel across the track. As Norris and Piastri dominated, endorsing the clear impression that a McLaren intra-team duel was in prospect for Sunday's race, Verstappen was down in 10th, adrift by a second, and reported, when asked about his car's balance, that it was like 'driving on ice'. His teammate Tsunoda was a tenth faster in ninth. Verstappen's pedestrian session was punctuated by an unusual late incident when he was filmed throwing a cloth, or towel, from his cockpit. He was expected to face a stewards' investigation. Lando Norris steers during the second practice in Mogyorod. AFP And showing signs that he was feeling the pressure, Norris endured 'a moment' when he slid wide on the grass at the final corner and recovered with 15 minutes remaining on used softs. Like Piastri, the winner here 12 months ago, he switched back to mediums signalling the fight for fastest lap was over. Piastri has developed into a genuine title contender over the last year. 'I have a lot of confidence in myself that I can do it,' the Australian said of his title chances Thursday. 'The pace in the last few weekends, especially (Belgium), I've been very confident in and very proud of. I'm more than capable of continuing that for the rest of the year.' McLaren can reach some milestones this weekend, with a potential 200th win in F1 for the team. It could also be Piastri and Norris' fourth one-two finish in a row, a feat McLaren last managed in 1988. Piastri took the win last year in Hungary, but only after McLaren had to plead over the radio with Norris to 'do the right thing' and let Piastri past, something the British driver was reluctant to do. Piastri had been leading but McLaren's pit strategy - which would normally favor the leader - had put Norris ahead. Piastri thinks the team can still take positives from that situation. 'I think it underlined the good nature in the team. It was obviously a slightly awkward situation, but it highlighted that we will do the right thing in all circumstances -- well, ideally all circumstances -- when we're on track,' Piastri said.
