Pitcher becomes 4th Taylor baseball player picked in MLB draft as 6th round pick to Houston Astros
Gabel Pentecost's path from homeschool student to NAIA star to professional baseball took another step toward reality Monday. The Houston Astros selected the Taylor University right-handed pitcher 186th overall in the sixth round of the Major League draft. As a junior, Pentecost retains the option of signing or returning to Taylor for a final season. That draft slot carries a bonus value of $341,600, per Pentecost was the first NAIA player selected in this draft, which lasts 20 rounds. However, per NAIA Ball on he is the third NAIA pitcher selected by the Astros in the past two years, following Southeastern's Ramsey David and The Masters' Ryan Mathiesen. Pentecost drew the interest of MLB scouts when his velocity kept climbing to the verge of 96 miles per hour this past season. He repeated as Crossroads League Pitcher of the Year, going 12-2 with 116 strikeouts against 21 walks and a 3.04 ERA. Pentecost was a homeschool student who did not play his first two years of high school. He played two years for the local district, Fremont, but planned to play Division III basketball. Taylor became his only scholarship offer when the coaches saw him pitch the sectional championship game. Pentecost's path: From homeschool to NAIA to MLB Draft? NAIA national title football game to be played this season in Texas
Another college football national championship game will be played in the state of Texas. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) recently announced that it will play its national championship game this December in Fort Worth. It will take place on Dec. 20 at the Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium, which opened in 2022. Among the stadium's tenants is the Texas Wesleyan University football program, which competes in the NAIA. Another team that calls the Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium home is North Crowley High School, which won the UIL 6A Division I state championship last season, going a perfect 16-0. Advertisement 'We couldn't be more excited to bring the NAIA Football National Championship to the Dallas-Fort Worth 'Metroplex,'' said Austin Bennett, NAIA Vice President of Championships, in a news release. 'Crowley ISD Stadium is a premier venue, allowing us to deliver a first-class championship experience to our incredible student-athletes. 'Football fans in Texas are engaged and really know the game, and we can't wait to showcase the very best of NAIA football in this vibrant community.' This season's NAIA title game will be the 70th edition. The NAIA will play postseason games on Nov. 22 and 29, as well as Dec. 6 and 13, all at campus sites, before the championship game on Dec. 20. The selection of Fort Worth is the latest college football championship game to be played in the 'Metroplex.' Since 2010, the NCAA Division I Football Championship, also known as the Football Championship Subdivision title game, has been played at Toyota Stadium in the northern suburb of Frisco, though starting in 2026, the game will be moved to Nashville, Tenn. Advertisement Also, the NCAA Division II championship game is played in another northern 'Metroplex' suburb, McKinney, with the game at McKinney ISD Stadium, which has been the title location since 2018. Last season's NCAA Division III title game took place in Houston at Shell Energy Stadium, but this season's championship contest takes place in Canton, Ohio. Storied HBCU To Join New Athletic Conference
NEW ORLEANS-Xavier University of Louisiana, a prominent NAIA-level HBCU with a century-long history of academic and athletic excellence, announced Monday that it will become a full member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) effective July 1, 2026. The decision follows a unanimous vote by the SSAC Board of Presidents earlier this month, signaling a significant realignment within the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) landscape. The move marks Xavier's fourth full-time conference affiliation since the inception of its athletic programs. The university previously competed in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) from 1935 to 1960, the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) from 1981 to 2021, and most recently, the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC), where it has been a member since 2021. "We are thrilled to welcome Xavier University of Louisiana as a full member of the SSAC," said Mike Hall, conference commissioner. "Their history of academic and athletic achievement strengthens our conference at every level." Hall pointed to Xavier's recent top-25 finish in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings as a testament to the HBCU's broad-based athletic success in NAIA. The Directors' Cup ranks collegiate athletic programs based on their performance across multiple sports. Xavier will not wait until 2026 to compete in the SSAC ecosystem. Three of its programs, competitive cheer, men's indoor track and field, and women's indoor track and field, will participate as affiliate members during the 2025-26 season. The SSAC, founded in 1999, comprises institutions across Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Its current members include Loyola University (New Orleans), William Carey University (Hattiesburg, Miss.), University of Mobile (Mobile, Ala.), and nine others across the Southeast. For Xavier, the move carries both strategic and historical significance. The New Orleans-based HBCU will renew conference rivalries with Loyola, Mobile, and William Carey. Three schools it frequently faced during its tenure in the GCAC, including as recently as the 2009-10 academic year. "We are excited to join the Southern States Athletic Conference," said Xavier Athletic Director Pat Kendrick. "We look forward to the high level of competition and the opportunity to reignite longstanding rivalries." Xavier President Reynold Verret echoed those sentiments, adding, "Joining the Southern States Athletic Conference affirms our commitment to excellence and expands opportunities for our scholar-athletes to thrive both in the classroom and in competition." The transition also signals the end of Xavier's five-year tenure in the RRAC. Before formally exiting, the university plans to compete for at least 12 RRAC championships during the 2025-26 season.
