Chelsea training cut short due to ‘impossible' heat in Philadelphia
Chelsea's head coach had no desire to make his players expend too much energy as they prepared on Monday for their final game in Group D in temperatures of 36C at Subaru Park. The session was shorter than usual and staff tried to cool the squad down by putting fans and water sprays on the pitch.

Yet it remained impossible for Chelsea to do much physical work given that forecasters said the heat index, or 'feels like' temperature, was at 41C (106F) owing to the humidity, with a heatwave covering much of the central and eastern areas of the US expected to become even more testing as the week progresses. Local authorities have urged people to avoid strenuous activity.

'It is almost impossible to train or to make a session because of the weather,' Maresca said on Monday. 'Now we are trying just to save energy for the game. This morning's session has been very, very, very short. It's been just about tomorrow's game, planning for tomorrow, and that's it. We are going to try to do our best. We will try to win tomorrow.'
Predictions that the temperature will drop to 34C when Chelsea and Espérance, the Tunisian champions, kick off at 9pm local time tonight will be counteracted by it expecting to feel like 40C. 'We have the cooling break during the game which helps a little,' Maresca said. 'Tomorrow will be our 60th game of the season. The ones who had international games had even more. We try to give them as much time as possible for recovery.'

Chelsea need to respond after losing against Flamengo last Friday. They need to draw with Espérance to avoid an early exit and know that victory against the Tunisian champions will not be enough to top the group, meaning Maresca's team are likely to face Bayern Munich in the last 16 in Charlotte on Saturday.
Maresca rotated against Flamengo and will make more changes against Espérance. Reece James is a doubt after missing training through illness and Nicolas Jackson is suspended. Maresca said Chelsea are partly using the tournament to experiment with new ideas as they have a shortened pre-season but he insisted that the club's owners have not spoken to him about the potential for the winners of the Club World Cup to earn £97m in prize money.
'The owners just want the best for us and for the players, game by game,' the Italian said. 'They are not talking about the final reward in terms of money.'
Maresca's comments come after critics warned Fifa that they should postpone the fixture on Tuesday between Bayern Munich and Benfica owing to the risks faced by players and spectators from extreme heat.

The heat index when the teams walk out at the Bank of America stadium in Charlotte at 3pm local time is likely to exceed 41C, according to forecasts monitored by the organisation Fossil Free Football.
'Fifa must act to protect players, fans and the future of its flagship summer tournaments,' a Fossil Free Football spokesperson said. 'That means postponing this match but also dropping polluting sponsors, turning away from petrostate partners and stopping the endless expansion of its competitions.'
The expanded Club World Cup has been beset by challenges related to hot weather, with players and coaches complaining about the conditions and fans reporting insufficient shade and access to water at the Paris Saint-Germain v Atlético Madrid match, which was played in the uncovered Pasadena Rose Bowl at noon on the opening Sunday. According to data compiled by the Guardian, 12 of the tournament's 32 teams have averaged gametime temperatures of 30C (85F) or greater, with every team having played two matches at the time of writing.
The Group C match between Bayern and Benfica will be played at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is customarily used by the Carolina Panthers NFL team and offers no cover over the vast majority of its 75,000 seats.

Asked about the prospect of playing in such high temperatures, Bayerns striker Harry Kane said: 'I'm not too bothered by the heat. In football, you have to adapt. For me and the other England boys here, this is really useful. We'll be more used to what we'll face next year, and I'm sure the conditions will be quite similar.'
Fossil Free Football has criticised what it calls Fifa's 'business as usual' approach to the tournament. The governing body has introduced no new measures to deal with the prevalent heat and has not accepted requests by the international players' union Fifpro to increase the number of cooling breaks for players or lower the temperatures at which they can be taken.
A Fifa spokesperson said: 'Fifa's top priority is the health of everyone involved in football, and Fifa's medical experts have been in regular contact with the clubs participating in the Fifa Club World Cup 2025 to address heat management and acclimatisation.
'Fifa will continue to monitor the weather conditions in coordination with the venue teams to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.'

Chelsea boss Maresca will let Neto decide whether to play following Jota tragedy
Enzo Maresca will let Pedro Neto decide if he is in the right frame of mind to play for Chelsea in Friday's Club World Cup quarterfinal clash against Palmeiras, after the tragic death of his international team-mate Diogo Jota. 'He's very sad,' manager Maresca said of Neto at his pre-match press conference in Philadelphia on Thursday. 'More than sad, but we are also close to Pedro to support him in this moment. Advertisement 'It's completely Pedro's decision (if he wants to play). I had a chat this morning with Pedro and we support him. Whatever decision he will take, it is the correct one and we are going to support him in any case, so it doesn't matter if he will be on the pitch. We will see how he is feeling tomorrow.' Liverpool's Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were killed in a car accident in Spain when their vehicle veered off a road and burst into flames near the Spanish city of Zamora, according to police. Jota is succeeded by his wife Rute Cardoso – the pair married just weeks ago – and three children. Elsewhere in the Chelsea squad, Romeo Lavia remains a fitness doubt but Maresca will give every chance to the 21-year old — particularly when considering that fellow midfielder Moises Caicedo is suspended for the clash at Lincoln Financial Field. 'Romeo, we're not sure if he can be fit — we're going to try tomorrow,' Maresca revealed. 'He had small problems at the end of the last game against Benfica, it's just a muscle problem. As I said, tomorrow we'll see if he's fit, but if not we're going to have to find different solutions because Moises is suspended.' New £50million signing Joao Pedro has integrated with the squad well since arriving in the United States, and Maresca did not rule out the possibility of handing minutes to the Brazilian international if the opportunity was there. 'Joao's situation is a bit strange, or different, because he was on holiday,' Maresca said. 'He was working (on holiday), but it's not the same when you work for yourself compared with when you work for the team. But we are really happy with Joao, the last two days he played with us — we will see if we need him. If we have a chance to give him some minutes, we will give him some minutes.' Chelsea will also come up against one of their future players in Palmeiras' teenage starlet Estevao. However, Maresca was keen to ensure that Chelsea remain focused in their preparation against Abel Ferreira's side rather than singling out any particular individual. Advertisement 'When we prepare games, we think about the team, not the players on the other side — and we have done exactly the same for this game,' Maresca said. 'We prepare the game for Palmeiras not against Estevao.' 'In this moment he is a Palmeiras player and he is going to play against Chelsea tomorrow. The only thing we are focused on is doing our best to beat Palmeiras and not beating Estevao.' Chelsea needed extra-time to get past Benfica in a weather-delayed round of 16 contest, but has landed in what can fairly be considered the easier half of the draw. Victory over Palmeiras would set up a semifinal against either Fluminense or Al Hilal on Tuesday.

Toronto FC beaten 3-1 by New York City FC in first game since buying out Italian DPs
NEW YORK - Toronto FC, in its first outing since buying out the contacts of Italian designated players Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, was beaten 3-1 by New York City FC in the lone MLS game Thursday. Hannes Wolf, Mitja Ilenic and Kevin O'Toole scored for New York (9-7-4). Eight of NYCFC's wins have come at home (8-3-0). The win moved NYCFC up three places to sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, seven places and 14 points above Toronto. While Toronto (4-11-5) was competitive at Yankee Stadium, its offence was stagnant in the first half. There wasn't much offence until Ola Brynhildsen and Theo Corbeanu both tested New York 'keeper Tomas Romero around the hour mark. At the other end it too often allowed NYCFC attackers too clear a path to TFC's goal. '(It's) disappointing because I thought we more than started well,' said Toronto coach Robin Fraser. 'I thought for a lot of the game we were really good. And really solid. 'Mistakes. Mistakes did us in. We're disappointed in the result, partially because we know how badly we need results. But really I'm proud of the effort. The effort was great. There were a couple of mental lapses that ended up costing us too much. But so many guys played so well and put in a real honest shift. It's just disappointing when you do so many things well and you still come out on this side of it.' New York outshot Toronto 10-8 (5-2 in shots on target). Toronto started brightly but found itself trailing 1-0 in the 20th minute when, after a NYCFC free kick, a cross found Wolf and the Austrian midfielder's stylish left-footed volley went in after beating Sean Johnson and hitting both goalposts. It was the ninth goal of the season for Wolf and his sixth in his last six games. Ilenic doubled the lead in the 49th minute, sticking out a leg to deflect in Agustín Ojeda's cross after the Argentine winger had been allowed to race towards the Toronto goal without challenge. Ilenic, a 20-year-old Slovenian international fullback, marked his second goal of the season with Cristiano Ronaldo's trademark celebration. Toronto cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 70th minute via an own goal. Corbeanu beat a defender down the right flank, reached the byline and sent in a cross that deflected off defender Justin Haak and then Romero into the goal. O'Toole restored New York's two-goal lead in the 74th minute. Kosi Thompson was dispossessed and Maxi Moralez passed the ball to Wolf, who found O'Toole unchecked in the Toronto penalty box. The substitute dribbled towards goal and beat Johnson with a low shot. Fraser went with the same lineup that beat visiting Portland 3-0 Saturday in what was TFC's best performance of the season. Toronto moved the ball around but showed little in front of goal in a first half that saw both teams attempt four shots with NYCFC holding a 2-0 edge in shots on target. TFC defender Kevin Long was shown a yellow card in the second minute with midfielder Matty Longstaff following him into referee Fotis Bazakos' book in the 20th minute. Defender Richie Laryea, back from Gold Cup duty with Canada, came on in the 57th minute. Maxime Dominguez became the third TFC player to be cautioned after a tussle with Ilenic in the 67th minute. Thompson made his 100th appearance for TFC in all competitions. New York forward Alonso Martínez returned from international duty with Costa Rica but goalkeeper Matt Freese, the hero of the American penalty shootout quarterfinal win over Honduras, remains at the Gold Cup. Romero, an El Salvador international and former Toronto player, started in goal for NYCFC. Canadian Greg Ranjitsingh, his backup, also had a stint with TFC. Toronto defenders Nicksoen Gomis, Zane Monlouis and Henry Wingo remain long-term casualties. Captain Jonathan Osorio was also out, recovering from a lower-body injury suffered with Canada, while midfielder Deybi Flores played in Honduras's 2-1 loss to Mexico in the Gold Cup semifinal Wednesday in California. Toronto signed TFC 2 defender Reid Fisher and midfielder Malik Henry to MLS short-term agreements for the game. Originally drafted by CF Montreal in the second round (39 overall) in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, Henry's promotion cost Toronto a third-round draft pick in 2026 with US$75,000 in conditional general allocation money, given Montreal had retained his MLS priority rights. Henry came on in the 70th minute, picking up a yellow soon after. Toronto has had little success at NYCFC with a 1-6-5 regular-season record there. The lone win was a 1-0 decision on Sept. 23, 2020, thanks to a 90th-minute Alejandro Pozuelo penalty in a game played at Red Bull Arena. TFC has won two playoff games at NYCFC. Up next, Toronto hosts Atlanta United on July 12 while NYCFC visits Charlotte FC. —- This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 3, 2025
