India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant steps down from government service
'My New Journey: After 45 years of dedicated government service, I have made the decision to embrace new opportunities and move forward in life,' Kant wrote on X. 'I am incredibly thankful to the Prime Minister of India [Narendra Modi] for accepting my resignation as G20 Sherpa and for having given me the opportunity to drive a range of developmental initiatives and contribute to the growth, development, and progress of India. I am grateful to all my colleagues, peers and friends for their patience, understanding, and support.'
On LinkedIn, Kant wrote he has decided to embrace new opportunities and begin a new chapter. He referred to the trust Modi placed in him to drive developmental initiatives that shaped India's growth trajectory.
Kant thanked finance and external affairs ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, and PK Mishra, the Prime Minister's principal secretary, for their guidance and support. 'I now look forward to India's transformational journey towards Viksit Bharat by supporting free enterprise, Startups, think tanks and academic institutions.'
Kant was named G20 Sherpa in July 2022 and held the position during India's presidency of the grouping in 2023. 'Leading India's G20 Presidency in 2023 was a significant milestone in my career. Despite complex global challenges, we achieved unanimous consensus on the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, and refocused attention on key developmental issues. We also successfully ensured the inclusion of the African Union in the G20, fulfilling India's commitment to global equity and the voice of the Global South,' said Kant, who began his career in 1980 as a Kerala cadre Indian Administrative Service officer.
Kant was NITI Aayog's longest-serving CEO from February 2016 to June 2022. He oversaw the Aspirational Districts Programme, the Atal Innovation Mission, and policy efforts on digital infrastructure, green hydrogen, and advanced chemistry cells. 'We helped lay the foundations for India's digital public infrastructure and pushed policy reforms across sectors—ranging from manufacturing through PLI schemes to innovation through the Atal Innovation Mission and sustainability through the Green Hydrogen Mission and Advanced Chemistry Cells,' he said.
Kant served as department for industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) secretary from 2014 to 2016, and tourism ministry joint secretary from 2001 to 2007. 'We initiated the 'Incredible India' campaign—born from the belief that travel & tourism has the best multiplier impact on jobs and growth,' he said.
Kant reflected on the early years of his career and wrote his journey began in Kerala, where he learned the value of grassroots development. 'From the 'God's Own Country' campaign to rejuvenating Calicut city by reviving Mananchaira Maidan, removing vast encroachments, expanding Calicut Airport and working closely with fishing community — these experiences shaped my career.'
He highlighted initiatives such as Ease of Doing Business, Make in India, and Startup India during his tenure at DIPP and added it helped India improve by 79 ranks in the World Bank's ease of doing business rankings.
Kant said India has always been, and will always be, Incredible. 'Humbled to have played a small role. Thank you for being part of this journey.' He shared a collage of images from his government service, including with Modi, and the Dalai Lama.

Shivraj Chouhan says 5 lakh PMAY beneficiaries in J&K to be provided houses soon
Omar Abdullah and Shivraj Singh Chouhan (ANI photo) SRINAGAR: With chief minister Omar Abdullah sitting next to him, Union minister for agriculture and rural development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday said nearly five lakh people in Jammu and Kashmir did not own a house, and they would be allotted one soon. Addressing a press conference, Chouhan said the allotment of 93% of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in J&K had been completed, and the remaining eligible beneficiaries had been identified. 'In a recent survey, five lakh names have been identified as deserving housing. The allotments will be made soon after the verification process,' he said. Under the LG-led administration earlier, Omar had questioned the criteria for identifying the housing scheme beneficiaries in J&K. 'Before allotting land, govt must clarify whom it considers 'homeless',' he had said in July 2023. He had made it clear that he was opposed to the inclusion of those who came to Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 under this scheme. J&K parties have in the past accused the Centre of attempting to settle 'outsiders' in Kashmir. Chouhan emphasised that a developed J&K was crucial to PM Narendra Modi's vision of a 'Viksit Bharat'. He praised the state's initiative, 'Kisan Khidmat Ghar' — a one-stop centre providing farmers access to all agricultural services under one roof. The minister said farmers in the UT who had received land allotments from govt but lacked official documentation would be considered for inclusion under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. Govt was also planning to launch the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme soon to ensure that horticulture crops were accurately mapped and included under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana, he added. Chouhan expressed satisfaction with the variety of horticulture crops grown in the region, but also raised a critical issue of imported plant materials often turning out to be infected after two or three years. To address this, a Rs 150-crore Clean Plant Centre would be established in Srinagar under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, he said. 'It will focus on clean, disease-free planting material for apples, almonds, walnuts and berries. Private nurseries will also be supported to ensure high-quality, pathogen-free plants are made available to farmers,' he added. Calling 'saffron' a symbol of Kashmir's identity, Chouhan announced that the Centre would establish a tissue culture lab and nursery to boost its production. He said the National Saffron Mission would be revised to suit local conditions, and an expert team of scientists would be formed to improve productivity and reduce losses.

Amitabh Kant joins IndiGo as Non-Executive Director
IndiGo, India's largest airline, has appointed former bureaucrat Amitabh Kant as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of Directors of InterGlobe Aviation Limited (the parent company of Indigo), subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals. Kant, who recently served as India's Sherpa to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 Presidency, was also the Chief Executive Officer of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) for a period of six years. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Kant has held many key positions across various domains of bureaucracy. 'With its scale, efficiency, and international ambition, IndiGo will open up new markets for India, and transform our airports into global hubs of connectivity and commerce—driving tourism, trade, and investment, while linking people, markets, and opportunities across borders. I look forward to contributing to IndiGo's, and India's, next chapter of trade, tourism, and economic growth,' said Kant. Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman of the Board of Directors of IndiGo, said, 'His (Kant) leadership qualities developed over the years by managing and delivering successful projects of global scale will benefit IndiGo immensely, especially in its fast-paced international expansion. IndiGo's team can leverage his broad based experience and knowledge in achieving its vision of becoming a global player by 2030.' Last week, Canadian billionaire Prem Watsa's company Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited had appointed former Kant as a senior advisor.

Rise of Global South shaping new world order, says PM Modi in Ghana
Prime Minister Narendra Modi , addressing Ghana's Parliament on Thursday, said the world order created after WWII is changing rapidly, driven by the rise of the Global South and shifting demographics. "In this changing context, we put emphasis on Africa's rightful place at the global high table," Modi said, noting that during India's G20 presidency, "we worked with the vision-One Earth, One Family, One Future," which helped secure permanent G20 membership for the African Union. Calling India the "mother of democracy," Modi said: "Democracy is not merely a system; it is a part of our fundamental values... India has over 2,500 political parties, 20 different parties governing different states, 22 official languages, thousands of dialects. This is also the reason that people who came to India have always been welcomed with open hearts." He said the shared histories of colonialism bind India and Ghana: "Our spirits have always remained free and fearless... Our friendship is sweeter than your famous Sugar Loaf Pineapple." On global challenges, Modi noted: "The challenges, such as colonial rule, that humanity has faced in earlier centuries still persist in different forms... climate change, pandemics, terrorism, and cybersecurity. Institutions created in the last century are struggling to respond. We need more than slogans. We need action." Thanking President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for conferring on him the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, Modi called it a symbol of "enduring friendship." Quoting Ghana's founding father Kwame Nkrumah-"The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart"-Modi underscored the long-term value of building democratic institutions. India and Ghana elevated bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Partnership during Modi's visit, agreeing to enhance cooperation in defence, food security, pharmaceuticals, and vaccine production. Four MoUs were signed, including on traditional medicine and cultural exchanges.
