Spencer Schwellenbach fractures elbow as nightmare Braves season continues

New York Post3 days ago
The Braves lost another starting pitcher to injury.
Spencer Schwellenbach felt some discomfort in his right elbow after he pitched against the Phillies on Saturday, and it was discovered by the Braves that he suffered a fractured elbow.
Atlanta will shut down the righty for four weeks, adding him to the 15-day injured list on Wednesday.

Though a return date is unknown, the club hopes to have him back in the majors by September, according to MLB.com.
Losing Schwellenbach is a significant loss for a struggling Braves team this season, as he was one of their bright spots with a 7-4 record, 3.09 ERA and 0.99 WHIP.
In his place, Atlanta called up left-hander Austin Cox.

The already struggling Braves (38-46) have lost three starting pitchers to the IL, Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale (rib), Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) and AJ Smith-Shawver (Tommy John surgery), who will miss the rest of the year.
Wednesday was a busy day of roster moves for the Braves as outfielder Jurickson Profar was reinstated from the restricted list after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs and getting suspended for 80 games.

With Profar returning, Alex Verdugo was designated for assignment.
The Braves sit seven games out of a wild-card spot and 11.5 games back from the top of the NL East.
Now, with the Braves losing one of their best starters, the climb back up has just gotten even more challenging.

MLB Insider Makes Major Aroldis Chapman Prediction Before Trade Deadline

MLB Insider Makes Major Aroldis Chapman Prediction Before Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. If MLB insider Ken Rosenthal is correct, then Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman is headed to Atlanta. Advertisement No, the Red Sox aren't trading Chapman to the Braves—at least, not to our knowledge. Instead, Rosenthal predicted that Chapman would make his eighth All-Star Game and first since 2021. Rosenthal listed Chapman and starting pitcher Garrett Crochet as Boston's two representatives. Every team must have at least one player named to the All-Star Game. Chapman is quietly having his best season in years, posting a 1.32 ERA and 14 saves for the fourth-place Red Sox. The veteran closer owns 14 saves and a 50-10 K-BB ratio in 34 innings, and he's on pace for his first sub-2 ERA campaign since 2016. Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Aroldis ChapmanJay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images The 37-year-old Chapman hasn't had an ERA under 3.00 since 2019, and he's already matched last season's 14 saves. Advertisement Chapman hasn't allowed an earned run since May 27, and he's recorded a fantastic 22-2 K-BB ratio in his last 13 innings. Although the 42-44 Red Sox haven't officially waved the white flag yet, Chapman is expected to be among the more high-profile relievers available this deadline. He's only on a one-year, $10.75 million contract, and his 2.6 walks per nine is easily a career-best. Don't be surprised to see teams like the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros pursue Chapman, who also owns a 2.37 ERA and 68-21 K-BB ratio in 49 1/3 career postseason innings.
