July 8, 1985, Forty Years Ago: Kanishka ‘Clues'

Computer analysis of the 'Kanishka' aircraft's digital flight data recorder (DFDR) gave 'definite clues' of a mid-air explosion before it plunged into the Atlantic on June 23. This further confirms the sabotage theory advanced by aviation circles and strengthened by the hearing of the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The analysis of the DFDR tape suggested cracking of the aircraft material seconds after the explosion.
Bhopal Tragedy Probe
Justice N K Singh, who is inquiring into the Bhopal gas disaster, said the Madhya Pradesh government was not cooperating enough to enable him to expedite the inquiry. He said he was 'handicapped' as the government had not appointed sufficient staff to assist the commission, and the technical experts required to assist in the investigation. He also cited instances when government departments objected to the commission's requirements on financial grounds.
Ahmedabad Violence
Five persons were killed and more than 20 injured as large-scale violence erupted anew in the communally sensitive Kalupur and Dariapur areas of the walled city, less than 40 hours after the Army handed over control of the walled city to the police. Indefinite curfew was imposed in these two areas. However, the Director General of Police, J F Ribeiro, ruled out deployment of the Army, saying, 'no chance at all'.
Deadly Collapse
At least 38 persons are feared to have been killed and 42 others injured when an Army building under construction collapsed near Akhnoor, about 34 km from Jammu. Eight bodies have reportedly been recovered and the rest were still buried under the debris. The building collapsed due to the heavy downpour. The victims were labourers from Madhya Pradesh.

DIG recommends suspension of DSP for remarks against top police officers

: After conducting a preliminary inquiry, Ziaul Haque, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Thanjavur Range, has recommended the suspension of M. Sundaresan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW), Mayiladuthurai District, who had made scathing remarks against some top police officers, sources said on Friday. A day after Mr. Sundaresan at a press meet accused senior officers of harassing him, the inquiry was conducted by the DIG, who recorded the statements of Mayiladuthurai Superintendent of Police G. Stalin and a few other police personnel in the district, the sources said. In his statement, Mr. Stalin said the DSP had falsely claimed that he had registered 1,120 cases and arrested more than 700 prohibition offenders, 'though he has not arrested a single person'. By giving a press meet on July 17, 2025, the officer had violated provisions under Tamil Nadu Government Servants' Conduct Rules, 1973, the sources quoted the inquiry officer as saying. Statements were also recorded from other police personnel attached to the PEW, in which they levelled various allegations against Mr. Sundaresan. The inquiry officer said only the Superintendent of Police in District, and Commissioners of Police in Cities were authorised to conduct press meet and issue press notes. Mr. Sundaresan had violated the procedure by addressing journalists without getting permission. 'Violated rules' The sources said the DIG, in his report to the Inspector-General of Police, Central Zone, had stated that the behaviour and conduct of the DSP 'betrayed his loyalty towards the organisation for which he worked'. On many occasions, he had openly displayed disobedience and insubordination of the authority of the SP. Instead of opting to utilise the grievance redress mechanism in the department, he had sought to address the media to make 'baseless allegations against senior officers.' The actions of the DSP not only impacted the morale and discipline of the force, but also tarnished its image, the DIG said in his report, and recommended that in view of the 'violations and transgressions of the rules of conduct prescribed to be followed by an officer of Tamil Nadu Police service, suitable departmental action, preferably suspension, should be initiated against Mr. Sundaresan,' the sources said. Inquiry conducted Asked for his comments, a top police officer at the State police headquarters confirmed that the DIG, Thanjavur, had conducted an inquiry and sent a report to his superior officer. Appropriate action would be taken based on the remarks of the IGP, Central Zone, and other findings. Addressing the media in Mayiladuthurai on Thursday, Mr. Sundaresan levelled serious allegations against senior officers who, he said, were pushing the government to a tight corner. While Chief Minister M.K Stalin was delivering good governance, some officers were causing a bad name to the government. The DSP said he was ready to face suspension.

Gangster shot dead in encounter in UP's Fatehgarh: Police

The Fatehgarh police on Friday gunned down a gangster carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head in an encounter. He was wanted in several cases, including the rape and murder of a minor girl recently, police said. Police identified the slain gangster only as Manu. Superintendent of Police, Fatehgarh, Arti Singh, said Manu had a 'long criminal history', including cases of murder and kidnapping for ransom. Two policemen suffered minor injuries in the shootout, officers said. According to the police, they received a tip-off on Sunday about Manu's location. When the police reached the spot, the accused tried to flee. However, finding himself surrounded, he pulled out a pistol and opened fire. The police retaliated, and Manu was hit by two bullets. Once the firing stopped, officers approached and found him injured. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead during treatment, the SP said. His identity was confirmed through an Aadhaar card found in his pocket. Manu was wanted by the police in connection with the rape and murder of a minor girl, whose body was found in a field on June 28. The girl had gone missing a day earlier, and her parents had lodged a missing complaint. On the basis of the medical report and other evidence, police added charges of rape and murder to the case. Manu's involvement surfaced during the examination of CCTV footage from the area. When he remained absconding, a reward of Rs 1 lakh was announced for information leading to his arrest. The police claim to have recovered a country-made pistol from his possession.

Pune: Two cops held for accepting bribe from lawyer facing dowry harassment case

The Pune unit of the state anti-corruption bureau (ACB) arrested two police personnel for allegedly accepting a bribe from a lawyer. The ACB identified the accused as police havaldar Rajashri Ghode and assistant sub inspector Rakesh Palande, both attached to the Ravet police station of the Pimpri Chinchwad police. A press release issued Friday by Deputy Superintendent of Police Dayanand Gawade of ACB, Pune unit, stated that the complainant in this case is a lawyer against whom a dowry harassment offence was lodged at the Ravet police station under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 498 (a), 323, 504, 506, 34. The case was being investigated by police havaldar Ghode. She allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the lawyer for not arresting him and filing a charge sheet with loopholes that would help him during the trial in the court. But the lawyer filed a complaint with the ACB on Thursday. Accordingly, a team of ACB verified the complaint. ACB sleuths confirmed that Ghode demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000, but after negotiations she agreed to accept Rs 30,000 from the lawyer for helping him in the dowry harassment case. ACB also confirmed that assistant sub inspector Palande provoked Ghode to demand for the bribe. The ACB team then laid a trap and nabbed Ghode red-handed accepting Rs 30,000 from the lawyer on the premises of Ravet police station. ACB further arrested Palande from his house. Deputy Superintendent of Police Satish Walke was investigating the case.
