Ex-Hamilton Accies star looks to next chapter after relegation causes exit

Reghan Tumilty is on the lookout for a new club after two-and-a-half seasons at Accies
Reghan Tumilty admits it was difficult to leave Hamilton Accies, but he's got to do what's best for him and his family.
The defender announced his departure after two-and-a-half seasons on social media, and Tumilty's looking for his next chapter after a holiday in Portugal.

Hamilton would have ended last season seventh in the Championship but for a 15-point deduction for off-field offences, and Tumilty has made the decision to move on.

But he thanked boss John Rankin for rescuing him from a miserable spell at Hartlepool United in 2023
Tumilty said: 'It was bad the way it ended, really, sad, really. Us as players, we felt like we did the best we could, that was all we could really do.
'It was about being professional and finishing it, and whatever happens happens.
'It was frustrating to be relegated, but we did our jobs. We had to be professional about it and do our side.
'We were hopeful that we would get some points back [in an appeal], but we got zero and there was no hope in the end.
'We had to be professional and I think we proved that in the last game against Falkirk.

'I know we got beat in the end, but we put on a good show, considering the amount that was going on in the background, and we were trying to play at the same time.
'I'm proud of my team-mates, to be fair.'

Tumilty added: 'It's not ideal but it's good for me now to move on and start somewhere else.
'There have been ups and downs, and I have enjoyed it.
'I do thank them a lot for bringing me in, the manager bringing me in, because it was at a point where I was hating football, so it made me like it again.

'Winning the SPFL Trust Trophy was a good moment, there have been a few 1-0, Tumilty games in the last couple of seasons, and those are my favourite ones.'
Tumilty doesn't have a club lined up, but hopes he can find a new one ahead of next season.

He said: 'I don't know what comes next, I'm just enjoying my holiday, I'm heading to Portugal.
'It has been good to switch off and enjoy my holidays, because you don't get it very often.
'You get this month a year, but your friends and family are at work, so you're just kind of hanging about.
'It will be good to get away and not really think about it.
'Hopefully I won't be short of offers.
'I've played a lot of games, so it's getting to that stage where hopefully something comes and it's the right fit, because I have things to pay for these days, I have bills to pay for.'

Hamilton 2 Montrose 0: Accies shrug off fan protests to start life in League One with win

Fans made their feelings known ahead of kick-off as Accies eased to victory in their league opener Hamilton Accies began life in League One with a comfortable victory over Montrose, on a day when angry fans made their feelings clear to the club's under-fire board. ‌ A band of supporters led a demonstration before the game, with fans protesting the club's move out of Hamilton to Broadwood and demanding the exits of director of football Gerry Strain and club owner Seref Zengin. ‌ Fans blame the duo for the club's mismanagement over recent months, which has led to multiple sanctions from the SPFL, including a 15-point deduction last season and this season's year-long transfer embargo after the club failed to fulfil tax obligations to HMRC. ‌ Supporters Association chief David Equi led the protest amid fears more punishment awaits the club and he voiced his concerns about administration. After making their voices heard, a few hundred fans still made their way through the turnstiles to back their team and witness what was a much more comfortable win than the scoreline suggested as a first-half Oli Shaw strike and a second half effort from trialist Charlie Telfer earned the points. Ahead of kick-off, Accies announced the signing of three new players on amateur contracts to get around their transfer embargo. The club welcomed English midfielder Mikey Stone, Nigerian winger Idris Munir and Canadian defender Cale Loughrey, who was the only one of the trio to start the game. Within 23 seconds Accies should have been in front when Oli Shaw was sent clean through in the first attack, but he sclaffed his finish one-on-one with Montrose keeper Cammy Gill and the ball drifted wide. ‌ Another golden opportunity presented itself in six minutes when a free-kick into the box from a trialist fell kindly for newly-appointed club captain Scott Robinson. Gill was caught out of position and Robinson couldn't get the ball under his control quickly enough to find the huge gap in the left-hand corner, allowing the Montrose defence to clear his effort off the line. Accies kept passing up the chances in 12 minutes when Shaw again went clean through. This time he pounced on a slip by his marker and when he tried to round Gill, the Gable Endies' No.1 did well to grab the ball as Shaw tried to skip around him. ‌ On the half hour mark Shaw dragged an effort wide from six-yards as he tried to find the far corner, and it seemed like only a matter of time before the hosts opened the scoring. It took Montrose until 33 minutes to create their first real opening. But when the ball was teed-up 20 yards out for Terry Mason to fire at goal, he sliced his effort high and wide. ‌ Steven Bradley then spurned a huge chance for Accies five minutes before the break when Robinson picked him out superbly at the front post. He looked destined to score, but he fired straight at Gill and Bradley sunk to his knees in disbelief. It almost came back to haunt Accies seconds later as Montrose went straight down the pitch and Aidan Quinn's fierce drive flashed just past the post. But Montrose's resolve was broken with the final kick of the half when Kyle MacDonald's cross from the right picked out Shaw in the centre of the box, and he made no mistake this time to tap home. ‌ Two minutes into the second half, MacDonald fizzed a strike just wide of the far post from an acute angle, as Accies looked to turn the screw. And the second goal did arrive in 62 minutes with a neat passage of play. Accies hit Montrose on the counter attack with Robinson darting forward and feeding Bradley on the edge of the box. The winger cut inside and slipped a neat pass inside for Telfer, who fired a fierce strike across the keeper and into the bottom corner to all but seal the points. ‌ With the game essentially over, Rankin turned to his bench in 77 minutes to hand Idris his debut as he replaced Bradley and Stuart McKinstry came on for goal hero Shaw. Montrose almost grabbed a consolation in 85 minutes when space opened up for substitute Ali Shrive inside the box, but Jamie Smith battered his fierce strike away to keep his clean sheet intact. ‌ Blair Lyons rattled the bar in stoppage time for Montrose, while McKinstry should have added a third in the final seconds but his weak shot was comfortably saved. Accies will now face their first away trip of the league campaign next Saturday when they travel to Dumfries to take on Queen of the South. HAMILTON: J Smith, MacDonald, Loughrey, Kilday, Hendrie, Robinson (Stone 90), C Smith, Telfer (Maguire 90), O'Hara, Bradley (Idris 77), Shaw (McKinstry 77). ‌ Scorers: Shaw 45, Telfer 62 Bookings: Kilday Subs not used: Eadie, Gallacher, Marks, Morgan.

Lewis Hamilton declares himself 'useless' in tough to watch interview at Hungarian GP

Lewis Hamilton declared himself "useless" and said Ferrari "probably need to change driver" in a gut-wrenching interview after qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. He had failed to make the top 10 after a disappointing Q2 exit and is set to start Sunday's race 12th on the grid. Charles Leclerc sparked jubilant scenes in the Ferrari garage by securing the team's first Grand Prix pole of the season. But in the other red car, Hamilton had a wretched time and was visibly emotional as he spoke to Sky Sports and made it clear he feels he is the problem. The Brit said: "It's just me, every time. I'm useless, absolutely useless. The team has no problem – the other car is on pole. They probably need to change driver." Hamilton had put in some decent times in practice on Friday. But still he had been complaining about a lack of balance and had told reporters that he had not felt as comfortable in the cars as his lap times had suggested, and those problems came back to haunt him in qualifying. In contrast, it was a joyous day for Leclerc who, earlier in the weekend, had declared the Hungaroring his "worst circuit of the season". But he produced one of his very best qualifying laps to see off both the McLaren cars which had dominated all three practice sessions but could deny the Monegasque when it mattered. ---

Barry Bannan commits to crisis-hit Sheffield Wednesday: ‘This club is part of me'

The Sheffield Wednesday captain, Barry Bannan, has signed a new contract with the crisis-hit Championship club after his previous deal had expired at the end of last season. The 35-year-old midfielder has been at Wednesday since 2015 and, despite the expiration of his previous contract in June, has been training with the first-team squad during pre-season. Wednesday did not say how long Bannan's new contract is. The club, who finished 12th in the Championship last season, are mired in financial difficulties and are under transfer restrictions imposed by the Football League after failures to pay the wages of their players and staff. In the past few days, Wednesday have seen their manager, Danny Röhl, leave the club and the North Stand of Hillsborough close due to safety concerns. The owner, the Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, is being urged to sell the club to preserve its future. Bannan's commitment to Wednesday comes as he revealed his daughter became upset when he told her that he might have to leave amid interest from other teams. 'This club is a big part of me and my family, who are with me here today as I'm signing,' Bannan told the Sheffield Wednesday website. 'They will always stand by me with whatever decision I make and I've decided to stay. 'We had a lot of conversations as a family and when I told my daughter Elsie that I might be leaving she started crying. Then last night when I told her I was staying she started crying again. I asked her why and she said they are just happy tears.' The Scot has been at Hillsborough for a decade, joining from Crystal Palace in 2015 and playing in the Championship playoff final defeat to Hull in his first season. He was handed the captain's armband by the then manager Garry Monk as Wednesday were relegated to League One. Promotion back to the Championship came when Bannan lifted the League One playoff trophy at Wembley in 2023. He has made 447 appearances. Wednesday are under a transfer embargo and subject to EFL fee restrictions until the end of the summer window following a previous failure to pay transfer fees on time. There is concern whether they will be able to fulfil their opening fixture of the Championship season at Leicester on 10 August. A pre-season friendly against Burnley, scheduled to take place behind closed doors on Saturday, was cancelled after Wednesday players reportedly refused to play.
