After enjoying smooth sailing early in the season, the Vancouver Whitecaps are experiencing some rough seas.
The team fashioned a 10-2-8 record across all competitions through its first 20 matches — one of the best starts in franchise history. Vancouver also held the best record in Major League Soccer and advanced to the final of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Things turned after a 5-0 loss to Liga MX club Cruz Azul in the final. Since then, Vancouver has gone 2-3-0 in MLS play but remains second in the Western Conference at 11-4-5 and fifth overall.
Head coach Jesper Sorensen said the Champions Cup run still brought value despite the result.
'It was an amazing experience for us, gave us a lot of good moments and also developed the team a lot,' he said. 'We have to do everything to get into that tournament. We have high aspirations and hope we can take it to the final (again) and maybe win it.'
Injuries and absences have tested Vancouver's depth in recent weeks. Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter and forward Brian White — both 2025 MLS All-Stars — have returned from international duty with the United States at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
White leads Vancouver with 15 goals across all competitions, just one shy of his total from last season, while Berhalter has recorded a career-high 10-goal contributions across all competitions.
'That's going to be great to have them back,' said Sorensen.
'We haven't been together in more than a month.'
Vancouver now faces a gruelling stretch, beginning a run of four games in 11 days. After Wednesday's Canadian Championship quarterfinal match against Valour FC at B.C. Place Stadium, the Whitecaps hit the road to face the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, Houston on July 16 and San Diego on July 19.
Goaltender Isaac Boehmer said the team is focused on Valour.
'I'm not really focused on those (MLS) games,' he said. 'I'm focused on this one coming up. Everyone says it's the hardest to defend the trophy. That's what we're going to do and that's the plan.'
Wednesday's match gives Vancouver a chance to regroup and continue its pursuit of a fourth straight Telus Canadian Championship.
The Whitecaps were favoured in the opening leg of the quarterfinal on May 20 but needed a goal from Ali Ahmed in the 80th minute to secure a 2-2 draw against the Canadian Premier League side from Winnipeg.
Sorensen said Valour will be motivated after that result.
'(They will) bring all the physicality they brought in the first leg. That's what they should do. Why hold back?,' he said.
Valour (2-8-2) sits seventh in the CPL standings and has lost three straight games, but midfielder Ralph Priso said the Whitecaps were reminded not to overlook anyone.
'It's no secret we're the favourites but we can't go into the game overlooking them,' said the Toronto native. 'We have to go in and take care of business.
'Any time you're toward the top of the standings and the team that has won three (Canadian championships) in a row, you're going to get everyone's best shot. We just have to be ready for that.'
The winner of the two-leg series advances to a semifinal in August.

Halifax senior hockey player logs 4,000 hockey games

When Mike Fougere retired from the Halifax Dockyard 17 years ago, he began filling his time with hockey and kept track of the games he played. Mike Fougere does not have his driver's license. He takes a cab everywhere, even when he goes to the rink, which is sometimes daily. When Fougere retired from the Halifax Dockyard 17 years ago, he began filling his time with hockey and kept track of the games he played. 'I wrote them down and I put them in the calendar,' said Fougere, who is now 67 years old and has reached a milestone for number of games played. 'Tonight is 4,000,' he said earlier this week at Centennial Arena in Hallifax. His personal record for games in one year is a staggering 305. 'I love the challenge, and it keeps me in shape,' said Fougere, who added playing hockey is also good for his mental health, and he enjoys playing alongside his friends. At age 67, with thousands of games under his belt, he knows what makes him a good goalie. 'I'm competitive, and I don't give up on the puck,' said Fougere. 'That's what they say.' Fougere's said his wife supports his never-ending hockey schedule which keeps getting busier. 'Once on Monday, then I play two times in a row on Tuesday, and then the summer league at the Halifax Civic Arena, then two shinny games on Thursday and then a game on Friday,' he said. It is a source of amazement for his teammates. 'It's unbelievable how much of an inspiration Mike is, just showing up in the rink four or five times a week to play hockey,' said his teammate, Matt Jardine. 'I hope at Mike's age I'll be the same way.' Fougere wants to keep playing if his body holds up and would like to play another 25 years, which would take him into his 90's. Fougere thinks it is possible, and he hopes other seniors follow his example to always stay active. 'All you got to do is move,' said Fougere. 'I walk every day and keep moving. People my age need to find something they like to do.' In Mike Fougere's case, he likes playing hockey, four thousand times over a 17-year period.

Windsor Spitfires sign first-round pick

The Windsor Spitfires have signed their first-round draft pick. Forward John McLaughlin was drafted 21st overall by the Spitfires in the 2025 OHL Draft back in April. The Spitfires announced Wednesday that McLaughlin, 15, has signed the scholarship and development agreement to join the Windsor club. McLaughlin hails from Corunna, Ont. and stands at 5 feet 10 inches and weighs 165 pounds. McLaughlin played for his hometown Lambton Jr Sting Team for the past three seasons. In the 2023-24 season, McLaughlin played a year up and scored 16 goals and had 17 assists for 33 points in 24 games. In the playoffs, McLaughlin had one goal and two assists for three points in four games. In the 2024-25 season, McLaughlin's season was cut short after an injury, he played in two games and scored two goals for the Sting. McLaughlin was called up by the Strathroy Rockets (GOJHL) and played in one game and had a goal and an assist. 'It feels incredible (to sign),' McLaughlin said. 'This is something I have worked toward for a long time and to sign with a team like Windsor is a huge honour. I am proud to be part of such a great organization and I am really excited to get started and put in the work,' he added. 'Johnny is a well-rounded player with an elite compete level,' said Spitfires general manager Bill Bowler. 'His work ethic and dedication on and off the ice will benefit both Johnny and our hockey club. We were thrilled to get him so late in the first round.' - Written by Dustin Coffman/AM800 News.
