'Next cab off the rank': Origin winner tipped to take Des Hasler's job at Titans
Slater was widely hailed for his tactics and bold selection calls as the Maroons bounced back from defeat at home in Game 1 to become the first Queensland side to win the remaining two games on the road and claim the Origin shield. Slater is contracted until the end of next year, which will be his fifth series in charge of the Maroons, but Ikin says the QRL are keen to tie him down 'for as long as we can'.
'It won't be a negotiation that looks similar to what happens in NRL land. I have great trust when we hand him the reins to take this team through a series and that trust has only increased every year he's had the job," Ikin told News Corp. 'It's for him to decide what he wants to do beyond next year and clearly if Billy wants to keep coaching the Queensland State of Origin team then he's probably going to keep the job.'
Ikin's comments come amid reports that Slater's Maroons assistant Josh Hannay has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed under-fire Gold Coast head coach, Hasler. The veteran mentor reportedly has a clause in his contract meaning the Titans can sack him if they fail to finish the season inside the top-eight.
That could happen after this weekend if Gold Coast fail to beat the Broncos on Sunday evening, with another loss meaning the Titans are mathematically out of finals contention. There have been suggestions that Hasler could retire at the end of the season anyway, despite being contracted until the end of 2026.
Either way, Hasler's tenure has been 'an absolute disaster' according to league reporter Michael Caryannis. The former premiership-winning Manly coach was signed to the Titans on a big-money deal to replace Justin Holbrook, and tasked to deliver a harder edge to the Gold Coast and deliver finals footy to the club. But the Titans are rooted to the bottom of the ladder after just four wins in 15 games and Hasler's position is under fire.
"It has been an absolute disaster," Caryannis said about Hasler's reign. "He's on a one million dollar contract and he was supposed to come in and really give this Titans side some clout. And it hasn't worked... the questions that we've had about the Titans for the last 24 months to three years still linger.
"Can they unlock David Fifita and what's their best halves combination? And we still don't have those answers. And if you can't have those answers 18 months into your tenure... you're never going to have them." The Titans will also be without veteran playmaker Kieran Foran next year after he announced on Friday that he was retiring at the end of the season.

And with Hasler's exit seemingly edging closer, Maroons assistant Hannay has emerged as his potential successor. The former Cowboys and Sharks assistant was part of Slater's coaching staff for Queensland's Origin series win and Caryannis says it's understood he is 'the next cab off the rank' as far as the Gold Coast coaching job goes.
"When you look at assistant coaches he's had a bit of experience with the Cowboys and Sharks... He's been in the Queensland Maroons set-up and went very close to getting the Parramatta job last year," Caryannis said about Hannay. "So if he wants the job, he'll be among the next cohort of coaches that don't have proper NRL experience (as a head coach)." Matt King, Ben Hornby and Dean Young have also been mentioned as potential candidates to succeed Hasler.

The Thunderbirds had some issues early, a lopsided 20-7 penalty count and a flurry of late goals from Cara Koenen giving the Lightning a 15-13 quarter-time cushion. Adelaide turned the tables emphatically in the second term. Aiken-George buried 15 goals, captain Hannah Petty subdued Liz Watson in the centre, and Sunshine Coast coughed up seven turnovers while chalking up an identical 20-7 penalty count to see the Thunderbirds motor ahead 32-25 at halftime. Tayla Williams, unused in the first half, subbed on for Petty midway through the third stanza and had an influence through the middle as the home side stayed in the driver's seat. Roosters roll as Sharks, Knights enjoy first NRLW wins
The Sydney Roosters had to subdue a determined St George Illawarra Dragons outfit to keep their NRLW season blemish-free, while Cronulla and Newcastle enjoyed healthy wins to open their 2025 campaigns. The Roosters prevailed 24-10 at Jubilee Stadium in Sydney for back-to-back wins to start their year, while the Sharks overwhelmed the Raiders 56-6 in Canberra. In Townsville, the Cowboys came crashing back to earth as the Knights scored a 26-6 win after leading 14-0 at the break. The lead changed three times in the top-four clash between the Dragons and Roosters until Hannah Southwell was sin-binned in the 55th minute for a late tackle on Sydney half Jocelyn Kelleher to open the floodgates. Olivia Kernick and Keeley Davis ran in quick tries to take the spoils. But coach John Strange wasn't pleased with 15 errors, compared with nine by the Dragons, and a poor completion rate of just 64 per cent. "I was disappointed in how we played, but the good thing is it's only round two and there's so much improvement in this team, and that gets me excited," he said. Much was made before the game of the clash in the centres between rookie Indie Bostock and Jillaroo Isabelle Kelly, with the pair giving as good they got, although Kelly scored the Roosters' opening try. "Obviously Izzy is a really good player, but Bossie did a great job on her, and who knows, with a few more years' experience she (might) be the next Isabelle Kelly," Dragons captain Raecene McGregor said. Roosters win but star half faces more time on sidelines
Sam Walker could face even more time on the sidelines after the Sydney Roosters superstar was sin-binned for an ugly shot in his comeback game, a tense 31-24 defeat of St George Illawarra. In his first game for 314 days, injury-stricken halfback Walker struck David Klemmer in a cannonball tackle, bringing the prop to the turf by entering the fray late and targeting his legs. The dangerous first-half shot put a damper on an otherwise strong return from Walker, who gave the Roosters the halftime lead with a field goal and then laid on a crucial try in the second half. But Walker will face suspension if he receives anything more severe than a grade-one charge, with the last man cited for a cannonball tackle, Karl Lawton, rubbed out for two games. A ban would be a tough pill to swallow for Walker after last month's broken thumb delayed his return from the anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered in September. The two sides scored a staggering five tries between them in a frantic first 17 minutes. Walker's edge put Daniel Tupou over for two tries as the veteran feasted on Tyrell Sloan, but Saints' Sione Finau gave his own opposite man, rugby convert Mark Nawaqanitawase, the same treatment. But after coming back from the sin bin, Walker put the Roosters up by a point with a field goal from 12 metres out in the final minute of the first half. His beautiful flat ball to Billy Smith gave the visitors their fourth try just after the break and reminded the NRL world just what they'd missed while the skilful 23-year-old was out injured. After some good chances, including a Jacob Liddle knock-on over the line, the Dragons finally had second-half points through a lovely Kyle Flanagan short pass to Jaydn Su'A on the right. But as in last week's loss to Canberra, they had to settle for gallant defeat and are set to finish the weekend four competition points out of the top eight.
