Gennaro Gattuso Convinced Italy Can Reach FIFA World Cup 2026
"I believe that we have good players available to us. We have four or five who are among the top 10 in the world in their position," added Gattuso.
"We have a good team, but I do mean team, I'm not thinking about individuals. I'm convinced that the team has quality and I'm convinced that we can achieve our goal."
Gattuso has a tough job on his hands with only top spot in the group giving automatic qualification to the World Cup, even with Italy having played two fewer games than Norway.
As well as the significant points gap Italy have a goal difference which is 12 goals worse than Norway, who hammered Italy 3-0 earlier in June.
That leaves Italy with the play-offs, from which they failed to reach the last two tournaments, as their only realistic shot at qualification.
"We need to bring back the enthusiasm and not think negatively. My goal is to make sure that the players that come to (Italy's training centre) Coverciano do so with great enthusiasm, and to create a family," said Gattuso.
"After formations, technique and tactics the priority is to recreate that mentality that in the past has made us stand out."
Gattuso, a World Cup winner in 2006, was not the Italian Football Federation's first choice to replace Spalletti.
Claudio Ranieri eventually turned down an appeal to come out of retirement, for a second time, to save his country's footballing fortunes.
But Italy icon Gianluigi Buffon, now head of the national team delegation, said he believes Gattuso is capable of defying those who doubt his capabilities after an up-and-down coaching career.
Gattuso, 47, was recently sacked by Hadjuk Split but has also managed AC Milan and Napoli, winning the Italian Cup with the latter club five years ago.
"I had a long playing career and every time I faced once of Rino's teams with Juventus they gave us a hard time, you had the idea that his teams had a precise identity, and that there was a lot of work and thought behind them," said Buffon.
"It's very simple, when you're on the pitch you can tell straight away if behind the other team there is a good coach or not. And I every time I faced his Milan or Napoli team I could tell that was the case."
Gattuso will be in the dugout for the first time in September when Italy host Estonia in Bergamo before travelling to Hungary to take on Israel.

ACC meet: No official word yet on India's Asia Cup in UAE
Mumbai: The build up to Thursday's Asian Cricket Council (ACC) AGM in Dhaka was marked by simmering tensions between the Indian and Pakistani cricket board and concluded with no official announcement of the 2026 T20 Asia Cup, slated to begin in the second week of September. The election of the ACC Vice President was also not taken up and the meeting was adjourned. Representational image: A logo of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). (REUTERS) It is understood further deliberations are required for the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup to come into force for which the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have the hosting rights . 'We are in consultations with the BCCI and hopefully we will resolve the (issues) very soon,' Mohsin Naqvi, Chairman, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and ACC told reporters after the meeting. For the tournament to remain commercially attractive, retaining the current structure where both India and Pakistan start in the same group to facilitate a return clash of the arch rivals in the next round and a possible third clash in the final is important. While many ACC members say, the Indian board is on board with the idea in principle, all BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia would say after the meet is 'an announcement will be made in the coming days'. The revenue generated from the men's Asia Cup is insignificant for the well-placed BCCI, but it matters more to all the other ACC member boards. In May, when reports emerged that India would say no to playing Pakistan in the Asia Cup, Saikia had rubbished those reports and said they had not had any discussions on the matter. After the brief armed conflict between Indian and Pakistan in May, dark clouds circled around the possibility of any cricket between the two neighbouring nations. Following a ceasefire, as time passed, the previously agreed understanding of India-Pak contests in multinational tournaments at a neutral venue was back in discussions. Pakistan will be playing their matches of the upcoming ICC women's World Cup to be hosted by India in Colombo. For the upcoming men's Asia Cup, the entire tournament is likely to be moved to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in UAE. While the ACC in its press release reaffirmed members' commitment of 'putting cricket first', that was hardly evident based on events that led up to the meeting. Geo politics writ large over proceedings. First, Naqvi scheduled the meeting in Dhaka against BCCI's wishes. As the Indian cricket officials were unwilling to travel to Dhaka because of strained India-Bangladesh political relations, they made failed attempts to outlaw the meeting. Ultimately, India attended the AGM virtually, with BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla logging in. Cricket in 2026 Asian Games The ACC announced the inclusion of cricket in the upcoming Asian Games 2026 to be held in Japan, which will see ten men's and eight women's teams participating from across the continent, to be chosen based on their rankings. Previously, cricket has been a medal discipline in three editions - 2010, 2014 and 2023. Among other outcomes, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, and the Philippines were added to the 25-member ACC.

Pakistan Unsure Of Participation In Next Hockey Pro League Due To Cash Crunch
Karachi: The Pakistan hockey team's participation in the 2025-26 FIH Pro League lies in jeopardy because of financial crunch, derailing the three-time Olympic champions' much-anticipated comeback at the international stage. The Pakistan men's hockey team, which has won the World Cup four times, has been invited to compete in the FIH Pro League 2025-26 after New Zealand, who had earned direct qualification by winning the 2024-25 Nations Cup, decided not to participate in the upcoming season. The International Hockey Federation (FIH), the game's governing body, formally extended the invitation to Pakistan on Wednesday and had given them a deadline till August 12 to inform their confirmation. Pakistan, which has failed to qualify for the last three Olympics and also World Cup, has been given an opportunity by the FIH to compete against top tier teams Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, India, Netherlands and Spain in the competition that will be held from December, 2025 till June, 2026. But the problem is that the cash-strapped Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) doesn't have funds to send the team for the Pro League. The PHF have now requested the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) to release 700 million rupees (around USD 2.5 million) for the entire campaign. The state run PSB, at its recent annual meeting, made it clear that it doesn't have the funds to ensure Pakistan's participation in the Pro League. The PSB, in fact, has already directed the PHF to submit detailed accounts of the funds allocated to them since last year and have flatly refused to release more funds to the national federation to pay daily and travel allowances of players and officials, who went to the recent FIH Nations Cup. Pakistan lost in the final of the FIH Nations Cup to New Zealand, who automatically qualified for the Pro League. But New Zealand have informed the FIH that they wouldn't be sending their team, as a result of which second-best Pakistan have got a chance to compete against the top tier teams. "But whether this will be possible has to be seen as the PSB will send a summary to the Prime Minister for allocation of special funds to allow the PHF to send the team to the Pro League," an official in the PSB said. He made it clear that because of the failure of the PHF to update the PSB on how they had spent funds released to them since last year the Prime Minister, who is patron-in-chief of the PHF might opt for a change in the top leadership of the federation before approving special funds of 700 million rupees. Rasheedul Hassan, an Olympic gold medallist who has launched a campaign against the PHF, said unfortunately the officials who had managed the federation affairs for last many years had failed to keep a clean image. When the inaugural Pro League was held, the PHF had initially confirmed participation in the event but later backed out citing lack of funds as a result it ended up paying a fine of 170,000 euros to the FIH. For record, Pakistan is the most successful national team in the Asian Games history, with eight gold medals -- 1958, 1962, 1970, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1990, and 2010, the highest number of times a country has become Asian Champion. Pakistan is also the only Asian team to have won the prestigious Champions Trophy thrice -- 1978, 1980 and 1994.

From hospital bed to EURO 2025 hero: Aitana Bonmati back to her decisive best for Spain
'You could write a book about this,' said Aitana Bonmati on Wednesday as she reflected on the last few weeks in her life after scoring the goal which took Spain into the final of the Women's Euro 2025. At the end of June the world's leading women's footballer was lying in hospital with viral meningitis and it looked like she might not be able to play for Spain at the tournament in Switzerland. Now she is preparing to lead her team into Sunday's final against England in Basel, in a rematch of the 2023 World Cup decider which Spain won, after converting the only goal of the last-four clash with Germany late in extra time. 'When the ball went in I started running around like a crazy person. I didn't know where to go,' a smiling Bonmati said as she spoke to media at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich after collecting the trophy for player of the match. Barcelona midfielder Bonmati, who has won the Ballon d'Or in each of the last two years, was taken into hospital at the end of June after reporting feeling unwell. Tests confirmed that she was suffering from a bout of viral meningitis and Bonmati could only watch from bed as her teammates beat Japan in a friendly. Viral meningitis is less serious than the rarer bacterial variant, which can lead to death within 24 hours, but it still seemed like a long shot for her to recover in time for the Euros. Growing rivalry Yet she did recover, and appeared as a late substitute in Spain's opening game at the tournament, a 5-0 win over Portugal in Bern on July 3. The 27-year-old was back in the starting line-up for Spain's final group match, a 3-1 victory over Italy, and retained her place for the quarter-final against the host nation before scoring the winner against Germany. 'I don't believe in destiny, just in hard work and in my own mentality. I can only thank everyone who has supported me because it has not been easy,' Bonmati admitted. 'She didn't have an easy start to the Euros but she has managed to overcome her health problems and has worked hard to get fit again,' remarked coach Montse Tome. Spain is now into its first-ever senior women's European Championship final, two years after winning the World Cup for the first time. Bonmati was one of the stars of that superb team which defeated England in Sydney, and is now dreaming of another title. As well as the 2023 Women's World Cup final, Spain beat England in the final of the men's Euros last year in Berlin. In late May an Arsenal side featuring several members of Sarina Wiegman's current England squad defeated Barcelona in the final of the Women's Champions League. Seven of the players who started for Barcelona that day in Lisbon also started against Germany on Wednesday, among them goalkeeper Cata Coll who made several vital saves before Bonmati got the winner. 'Cata played really well, with some big saves when we were suffering,' Bonmati said of Coll, who missed all of Spain's three group games due to tonsilitis. 'Neither of us had the start we wanted at this Euros due to illness but we are lucky to be here today. 'It shows what can happen in life. In the end we have had good news.'
