She is set to commence her role at the Space Application Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad in the coming week, where she will focus on India's forest management initiatives.

Currently, she is working towards her PhD in forest products and utilisation at NAU, supervised by Prof.

"After completing my post-graduate studies, I thought of going into state or national forest services by appearing in competitive jobs. I never thought of serving India's prestigious organisation ISRO. However, with the guidance of my mentors at NAU, I came to know that ISRO is looking for specialists in the forestry and ecology," she said.
Preeti appeared for a written exam in December last year. "I will be joining SAC, Ahmedabad, where I am supposed to work on forest stand structure and forest stand dynamics using remote sensing and GIS technology," she added.

Kochi corporation moots increase in remuneration for dog catchers

Kochi: Finance standing committee of Kochi corporation has recommended increasing the remuneration for dog catchers at its animal birth control (ABC) centre at Brahmapuram. Currently, dog catchers receive a payment of Rs 20,000 per month without any additional financial benefits. Due to the meagre remuneration, many individuals who cleared the interview for dog catchers' post are not joining the centre, corporation officials said. "Even while the stray dog menace is worsening, the corporation is unable to appoint more dog catchers. It is a dangerous, difficult and low-profile job. Even the guest workers deployed for menial jobs are getting more wages, while the dog catchers get less than Rs 700 a day. That is why we decided to suggest increasing the remuneration," said finance standing committee member M G Aristotle. "We have recommended discussing the suggestion at the next council meeting," he added. Currently, there are only four dog catchers at the ABC centre in Brahmapuram. This affects the pace of vaccination and sterilisation. Licence for paying guest facilities: The meeting held on Monday, also suggested a 'special residence tag' for paying guest facilities in the city. "With the increased inflow of students and job aspirants from other districts to Kochi, hundreds of paying guest facilities are mushrooming in the city. Unfortunately, none of them have a licence. There is a provision for giving the corporation's licence for homestays, but in the case of paying guest facilities, there isn't any such provision. However, there is a provision in the building rules with which a 'special residence' licence to paying guest facilities can be provided," Aristotle said.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The annual fee for the course is Rs 4,000. The MA course aims to give students in-depth knowledge and practical understanding of women's issues, gender inequality, women's rights, related laws, and social justice. The course prepares students for roles in policy-making, advocacy, research, education, media, non-government and government organisations, women and child development, counselling, family courts, child welfare committees, social work, and other social sectors. Admissions for all three courses are open. Each course has 20 seats. "Any graduate can apply for admission, which will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis," said Centre for Women's Studies Director Dr. Reeta Venugopal, who will be overseeing the MA in Women and Gender Studies from this academic session. Earlier, the Centre for Women Studies, PRSU, offered a Certificate Course in Women, Law, and Gender Justice, and a Community-Based Participatory Research course, run in collaboration with UNESCO. Thefee for these certificate courses is Rs 2,500. Poll Should more universities in India offer specialized courses in Women and Gender Studies? Yes, definitely No, not necessary 'So far, we had been offering a six-month certificate course at our Centre for Women Studies, but a full-time MA course has been launched for the first time. We have faculty members at the Centre who will contribute to teaching, and we will also recruit additional staff for the MA programme. Our existing Centre for Women's Studies is one of the 77 UGC-sponsored centres across India and is performing very well,' Dr. Venugopal told TOI. Speaking about career prospects, she said that candidates completing the two-year course will be equipped to work in the Women and Child Development Department and other social sector fields.
