Sudan hold Senegal and stay top
Forced to stage home matches in Libyan city Benghazi because of the Sudanese civil war that has raged since April 2023, Sudan have 11 points halfway through the 10-round competition.
Democratic Republic of Congo lie second with 10 points, Senegal have nine, Togo four, and Mauritania and South Sudan two each.
The nine group winners in Africa qualify automatically for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. There could be a 10th qualifier if the winners of an African mini-tournament involving the four best-ranked runners-up finish among the top two in inter-continental play-offs.
Senegal, seeking a third straight appearance at the global showpiece, dominated possession and had 19 goal attempts, but just four on target.
There was no respite for the Sudanese, who also had to defend 11 corners as Senegal sought maximum points and first place.
On the rare occasions Sudan broke into the Senegal half, they proved more accurate, getting three of seven goal attempts on target, including two near misses.
Captain Ramadan Agab was among three Sudanese yellow-carded in three minutes during the second half, while star Senegal forward Sadio Mane was booked later.
The Sudanese were the happier side at full-time having taken a point off a team that started with eight players from top European leagues and three from the Saudi Pro League.
Sudan used seven players from their leading clubs, Al Hilal and Al Merrikh. Three are based in Libya and Abdelrahman Kuku is with an Australian second-tier side.
Fleeing a war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and uprooted more than 12 million people, Hilal and Merrikh relocated to Mauritania, where they compete in the national league.
Elsewhere, Togo and Mauritania remained winless in the same group after drawing 2-2 in Lome, where the home team led and trailed before Kevin Denkey equalised on 69 minutes.
Thibault Klidje got the Togolese off to a great start by scoring after just four minutes. Aboubakary Koita levelled on 52 minutes and Abdallahi Mahmoud put Mauritania ahead soon after.

PCB responds to Sana Mir's remarks on Pakistan women's cricket team scheduling
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has addressed former women's cricket captain Sana Mir's recent remarks on social media, calling her statements "factually inaccurate" and urging her to verify information before sharing it publicly. Mir raised concerns about the timing of Pakistan's domestic 50-over tournament, questioning its value after the World Cup, when the team would only play three ODIs in the build-up. In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), she criticised the scheduling and urged for "constructive criticism" rather than praising inefficiency. So you are ruling out Pakistan to go past group stage before the start of their campaign? What's the point of 50 over National Championship after the WC when you are only playing 3 ODI in the build up? Important to do constructive criticism for the betterment of the country… — Sana Mir ثناء میر (@mir_sana05) July 18, 2025 A senior official from the PCB Women's Wing clarified that the National Women's One-Day Tournament, which is part of the 2025-26 domestic calendar, marks the beginning of the new season for Pakistan's women cricketers. The official dismissed Mir's remarks as "hasty" and explained that the one-day cycle will conclude with the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025, set to take place in India and Sri Lanka. The PCB stressed that player welfare is a priority, detailing an intensive programme from July to November 2025, which includes two training camps, an away T20I series, a home ODI series, and the World Cup. PCB clarifies misleading social media post by @mir_sana05 Read more⤵️ — PCB Media (@TheRealPCBMedia) July 18, 2025 Refuting Mir's claim, the PCB official confirmed that the National Women's One-Day Tournament would run from November 10 to 23, 2025, in Karachi, starting after the World Cup finishes. Preparations for the World Cup are already underway with a 25-day skills and fitness camp, including 50-over practice games. The board also noted that Pakistan remained unbeaten in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier in April and participated in the National Women's T20 Tournament in May. In response to the PCB, Mir again posted on X, clarifying her earlier comments. With due respect, the womens cricket calendar presented on the PCB social media handle shows the overlap, which in reality is not the case, hence causing the confusion. Moving on, I'll definitely verify my facts from reliable sources and social media publications.@TheRealPCB — Sana Mir ثناء میر (@mir_sana05) July 18, 2025

Cincinnati stun Messi's Miami
Lionel Messi #10 of Inter Miami CF controls the ball during the MLS match between FC Cincinnati and Inter Miami CF at TQL Stadium. Photo: AFP Lionel Messi's Major League Soccer-record streak of multi-goal games ended at five on Wednesday as his Inter Miami squad was blanked 3-0 at FC Cincinnati. The 38-year-old Argentine star forward had scored a brace, two goals, in five consecutive matches for Miami, giving him 16 goals on the season as Inter managed four wins and a draw in the run. Not since 2012 when he played for Barcelona had Messi netted a brace or more in five consecutive matches. But Cincinnati kept Miami to only two shots on goal in the contest. "Clearly today we were outplayed from the beginning of the match," Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano said through a translator. "It was very difficult for us to win the individual duels. Maybe one of the reasons is that physically we come with a very big hustle and bustle and in the long run we end up paying. "Leo suffered a knock at the end but it ended well." US 20-year-old midfielder Gerardo Valenzuela opened the scoring for Cincinnati in the 16th minute. Brazilian striker Evander followed with a goal in the 50th minute and struck again in the 70th to provide all the scoring the hosts needed. "We didn't play the game we wanted. They put us under pressure all the time, we weren't fresh or lucid and they beat us very well," Mascherano said. Miami fell to 11-4 with five drawn for 38 points, fifth in the Eastern Conference and eight points adrift of first-place Philadelphia, the overall MLS leader which beat Montreal to stay one point ahead of Cincinnati in the overall MLS standings. Inter Miami has three games in hand on both clubs but would need to win them all to overtake their rivals for the overall league lead. "The opponent outplayed us from start to finish," Mascherano said. "The result and the way they beat us obviously worries us. Now we have to rest and think about the next game." That will come on Saturday when Miami will visit the New York Red Bulls, who got two goals each from Cameroon's Eric Choupo-Moting and Sweden's Emil Forsberg in a 5-3 home win over New England on Wednesday. De Paul to join Miami A source close to negotiations told AFP on Wednesday that Inter Miami has agreed on terms with Argentine international Rodrigo De Paul, a midfielder for Atletico Madrid. The deal is for the next four seasons with De Paul to play the remainder of 2025 in Miami on loan from Atletico Madrid with a subsequent purchase option for Inter worth more than $12 million. De Paul could play for Miami for the first time on July 30 against Mexican side Atlas in Inter's debut match in the Leagues Cup, a tournament between MLS and Mexican League clubs. He will leave Europe after four seasons in Madrid to join countryman Messi 11 months before the World Cup to be hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico. Messi has not said if he will play in the World Cup. De Paul and Messi were teammates on Argentina's 2022 World Cup champions and reuniting them could help entice Messi to sign a new contract with Inter, whose deal with the superstar expires at the end of this year. The club wants Messi to stay for the 2026 season, in which Inter will open a new stadium in Miami. DePaul, 31, joins a Miami core that includes Messi, Uruguayan Luis Suarez and Spaniards Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. Charlotte was named host city for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday. This year's all-star matchup will be in Austin, Texas, next Wednesday with the MLS All-Stars facing the Mexican League All-Stars.

Russell set to retire after Aus T20Is
Andre Russell, who was included in the 16-member West Indies squad against Australia, is set to hang up his boots from international cricket during the T20I series, starting from 20 July. He had missed being a part of the squad against England late last year, due to an injury. The Jamaican who is a two-time world champion, having been a part of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup winning squads in 2012 and 2016, will play his last two international matches on 20 and 22 July at his homeground in Sabina Park. Russell was thankful to have represented the West Indies and expressed his pride in donning the maroon jersey for more than a decade. "Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life," he told Cricket West Indies. "When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realise what you can achieve. "This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others." The two-time World Champion expressed about finishing his career in front of the home crowd and hope to bid a memorable farewell to the game. "I love playing for the West Indies and I love playing at home in front of my family and friends where I get to showcase my talent and produce more high-quality performances. "I want to finish my international career on a high while being a role model for the next generation of cricketers coming out of the Caribbean." Having played only the shortest format of the game since 2019, the swashbuckling all-rounder has snapped 61 wickets and scored 1078 runs in 84 outings. His raw skills in domestic T20 leagues won his teams championships with Russell being a major contributor in many of such victories. Darren Sammy, who was his teammate, captain and is now the West Indies coach acknowledged Russell's hunger to perform and win for the country. "Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor. Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. "I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come." Andrew, Blades named for T20Is Cricket West Indies (CWI) has unveiled a 16-member squad for their upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, starting July 20, following the conclusion of the Test leg which Australia swept 3-0. Teen sensation Jewel Andrew and left-arm seamer Jediah Blades have earned their first-ever T20I call-ups. Andrew, just 18, is a highly-rated wicketkeeper-batter known for his maturity at the crease and proficiency against spin. His domestic performances have caught the eye of selectors looking to inject fresh energy into the side. Blades, who made his ODI debut last December, impressed with the new ball and gets a shot at making his mark in the shortest format of the game. Skipper Shai Hope leads a squad featuring experienced campaigners like Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, and Rovman Powell. Head coach Darren Sammy stressed that the series is part of West Indies' roadmap towards the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, set to be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka. "Our focus is clear - we're building towards winning the T20 World Cup in 2026. This series gives us a chance to refine our playing style and strengthen our core group," Sammy said. Acknowledging recent home losses, Sammy added, "We haven't had the results we wanted at home in our last two series, but this is a fresh start. We're confident in our group and hungry to turn things around."
