Flaws in infra, sewage spills into parks & open plots, raises a stink in Gurgaon's Sector 9A

Time of India16 hours ago
Gurgaon: Residents of Sector 9A have been facing persistent sewage overflows due to a malfunctioning main pumping station (MPS) in the area. They pointed out repeated failure of the pumping station to channel sewage to the treatment plant (STP), resulting in raw sewage continuing to stagnate near residential areas and creating an unbearable stench, further posing severe hygiene and environmental risks.
Residents have written to GMDA CEO Shyamal Misra, seeking his intervention on the matter. The MPS was built to channel sewage across the railway line to a treatment plant at Dhanwapur.
Residents say that raw sewage flows along the railway track and spills into nearby green belts, parks, and open plots. "This is not a one-off issue after rains; we have been living with this for years. Our parks have turned into dumping grounds for sewage.
The trees we planted five to six years ago started dying, and the park is no longer safe for any kind of use," said Lalit Bhola, general secretary of the RWA.

According to residents, they have made repeated complaints to GMDA officials, but no lasting measures have been taken to resolve the issue. "Every time we raise the matter, we are told the motors are under capacity or the system is overloaded — but nothing is done to prevent the sewage from spilling out," Bhola added.
In response, a GMDA official maintained that the system is working as intended. "The main pumping station is functioning at full capacity, and the discharge is occurring through freefall, ensuring smooth outflow. During the monsoon season, the MPS can pump up to 230 MLD against its 168 MLD usual capacity," the official said.
Residents, however, questioned these claims. "If everything is running smoothly, then why is sewage still flowing through our sector?" asked RS Balwada, a resident.
With the ongoing monsoon intensifying the overflow, residents say the situation is worsening, with no interim arrangements such as containment or redirection in place. "Besides creating unlivable conditions in our sector, it is causing environmental degradation. There should be some temporary arrangement as they cannot remain in denial while residents keep suffering ," Balwada added.
In July last year, the govt had approved the augmentation of the existing main pumping station up to 665.5 MLD capacity. Subsequently, the GMDA started the tendering process in May this year, but extended the timeline for submitting the bid to August. Once construction begins, the project, estimated at Rs 97.6 crore, will take two years to complete.

Irrigation dept reports Kirari Suleman Nagar drain receives excess drainage, plans upgrade to prevent waterlogging

New Delhi: The irrigation and flood control department (IFC) has submitted a report to National Green Tribunal, explaining that the 7.8-km Kirari Suleman Nagar drain is receiving more drainage than its carrying capacity. The drain starts at Rohini Sector 20-21 and passes through densely populated, unauthorised and waterlogging-sensitive areas of Kirari and Mundka. The reply followed the Times of India's Nov 2024 report titled "How this 'river' of filth claimed teen's life", after a 13-year-old boy drowned in the drain near Rajendra Nagar Extension. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi "The drain in question is the Kirari Suleman Nagar (KSN) drain. It passes through densely populated, rapidly developing unauthorised colonies and Kirari and Mundka Assembly constituencies, which are waterlogging-prone," the reply dated July 29 said. The department said that over Rs 58 crore was sanctioned to redesign the drain in the Kirari area to resolve the waterlogging problem. The irrigation department also said that due to the rapid increase of unauthorised colonies in Kirari and Mundka, the drain also carries wastewater in addition to stormwater, including sewage and household waste discarded by residents. "The existing culverts at KSN drain create obstructions due to the massive discharge beyond the capacity of the drain, resulting in water touching soffit/sill levels of the existing culverts, creating afflux in upstream portions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search Ads Get Info Undo Therefore, to attain smooth flow in the drain, a scheme for the upgrade of existing culverts on KSN Drain as a comprehensive measure has been prepared and placed before TAC for consideration and approval. The scheme amounting to Rs 629.9 lakh has been approved. The schemes envisage the demolishing and reconstruction of culverts resulting in the obstruction of free flow of the drain," the irrigation department said. It also added that the department has taken up the maintenance and removal of floating material, garbage and obstruction through tender, with proper removal of silt, cow excreta, MSW, and floating materials from the bank, to ensure smooth flow in the drain throughout the year. Meanwhile, in a separate submission on the same matter, the sub-divisional magistrate, Punjabi Bagh, West district, submitted that an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh was sanctioned for the family of the deceased.

Hyderabad school's annual nursery fee of Rs 2.5 lakh sparks debate

A private school in Hyderabad is under fire after its sky-high fee structure went viral on social media. The post, shared by Anuradha Tiwari, founder of the Dharma Party of India, featured the annual fees charged by Nasr School — with nursery alone costing a staggering Rs 2,51,000.'Now, learning ABCD will cost you Rs 21,000 per month. What are these schools even teaching to justify such a ridiculously high fee,' Tiwari asked in the caption of her detailed fee sheet also showed Pre-Primary I and II (PPI 1 and PPI 2) at Rs 2,42,700, Classes 1 and 2 at Rs 2,91,460, and Classes 3 and 4 at Rs 3,22,350 annually. Take a look at the post here: The comments on the post reflected growing public concern over the affordability of private education in India.'If one cannot afford the fees, don't send your kids to this school. Simple and straight,' a user said as another countered, 'This entire process has become a sort of scam. Certain things need to be regulated effectively.''Is there a compulsion to get one's kid educated in this school only? Irrespective of other aspects, such schools flourish because parents want to pay and get that additional cushion of satisfaction. Happy schooling,' another user comments drew comparisons with schools in other regions. 'This is still cheap. A few schools in NCR charge upwards of Rs 1 lakh only as tuition fee for nursery students,' a user said. Another added, 'I am curious. What's so special about these schools? How is it any different from the schools which cost Rs 1 lakh per year?'One of the users added, 'Very sad. Education is too costly.'Nasr School has not yet responded to the controversy.- EndsTune InTrending Reel

Kerala to give homes to more survivors of Wayanad landslides

Wayanad/Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 30 (PTI) The Kerala government will provide houses to 49 more people who lost their homes in last year's devastating landslides in Mundakkai and Chooralmala in Wayanad district, bringing the total number of rehabilitation beneficiaries to 451. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday and announced by Revenue Minister K Rajan at a memorial meeting in Meppadi in Wayanad on the first anniversary of the disaster, which claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed homes, shops and farmland. The state will also compensate traders who lost shops, commercial buildings, rental properties, goods and other assets, the minister said. Survivors needing ongoing medical care will continue to receive support until December 31, with Rs 6 crore set aside from the Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund. A memorial will be built at the 'heartland" of Puthumala for Rs 93.93 lakh, with work starting before Onam. Rajan said hearings had been completed for more than 100 applicants seeking inclusion in the housing list. Those eligible will be added after verification, while others may be covered under different schemes for disaster survivors. Field inspections will begin in August. For tribal rehabilitation, the government has identified five hectares of land in the new Vellarimala village in Meppadi, where houses will be built for 13 families. Each will get a house and 10 cents of land. A committee of officials and experts will fix compensation for affected traders, the minister said. Rajan said all houses in the Elston township should be completed by December 31 if rains do not cause delays. The minister said the government's aim is to implement a comprehensive rehabilitation plan that embraces survivors and is open to any kind of social auditing. 'There may be shortcomings — we can discuss them. The government is moving forward by considering everything," he said. He also praised local residents who, before state and central rescue teams arrived, carried out 'near-impossible" rescue efforts that saved many lives. The event was attended by Ministers O R Kelu and T Siddique, District Panchayat President Samshad Marakkar, Meppadi Grama Panchayat President K Babu, senior officials and representatives of political parties. Meanwhile, the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, also decided to grant compensation to victims of the landslide disaster in Vilangad in Kozhikode, similar to that provided to those affected by the Chooralmala disaster. 'Livelihood compensation will be provided on the recommendation of the District Collector, and financial assistance will also be given for medical treatment," a release from the Chief Minister's Office said.
