KUCHING (May 27): A total of 56 new stage buses have been introduced across 10 key routes in Kuching under the State Bus Service Transformation (SBST) BAS.MY project, said Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
He was this was a major push to modernise Sarawak's public transport system, and that BAS.MY was currently servicing six routes, including the latest one to Kampung Benuk which began operations on May 22.
'Since the rollout on March 5 this year, the SBST project has recorded 34,860 passengers across five routes, namely Taman Malihah, King Centre, Bako, Bau and Serian.
'This initiative not only aims to improve accessibility to public transport in the city, but also reduce traffic congestion. Passengers can ride unlimited for just RM50 a month with the MyBas50 pass,' he said in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting yesterday.
He noted that students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities are eligible for free rides under the programme.
As of May 13, a total of 2,175 applications for MyBas50 and concession cards were received since the initiative were introduced in March.
Lee also announced that the 14 smart stage buses that were introduced in Miri in October 2024 saw ridership reaching 455,068 in just six months, which indicates growing public confidence in the bus system.
'These buses are equipped with electronic ticketing machines that accept debit and credit cards, e-wallets and cash, and registration and reload services for the passes are available at the Kuching Open Air Market bus station,' he said.
On intercity travel, Lee said express buses remain an essential mode of transport, particularly for those commuting for work, studies or to visit family.
Based on data from Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal, he said an average of 37 express bus trips depart daily. The most popular domestic routes are to Sibu, Bintulu, Sarikei, Miri, and Sri Aman, with Sibu topping the list at 3,669 passengers or 19.3 per cent of the total 19,023 passengers last year.
Meanwhile, Pontianak remains the most popular international destination with 4,818 passengers recorded in 2024, or 25.3 per cent of outbound international travellers.
'To meet rising demand and ensure service reliability, my ministry will continue to collaborate with bus operators, relevant agencies and our counterparts in Indonesia,' he said.
He also highlighted that plans are underway to develop an integrated Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to enhance coordination, efficiency and the passenger travel experience, although it remains in the early planning stages.

With durian deluge, trader sells spiky gold for a steal

JITRA: An excess of durians has prompted a durian trader to sell the fruit at bargain prices at his stall near the Kubang Lembu petrol station in Jitra. Khairul Anuar Ahmad, better known as Harun Buah Jitra, auctions off kampung durian and hybrid durian varieties every evening at RM50 for three baskets, with a total weight of between 15kg and 20kg. He said the move was necessary to prevent the fruits from going unsold and rotten. Khairul said the auctions are held in the evening to coincide with the after-work crowd, typically around 5pm. "I sell the durians at affordable prices so that everyone can enjoy the fruit during its peak season. "Sometimes, I move up to 10 tonnes of durian a day — all sold out within two hours. Thankfully, the demand has been very encouraging. "There's currently a large supply of kampung durians from Balik Pulau in Penang and Perak, which has led to an oversupply. "That's why I've chosen to hold auctions to clear the stock. People from all walks of life come to buy here," he said. Khairul added that many of his customers also contribute to charitable causes by purchasing durians for donation to those in need. In addition, he donates durians to orphanages and non-governmental organisations to ensure that everyone, regardless of their status, can enjoy the king of fruits. He said he sources between eight and 10 tonnes of durians daily from Penang or Perak for sale at his stall. "If customers buy in bulk, we'll throw in extra fruits, especially if it's for a kenduri or donation. "Besides kampung durian, we also sell other varieties such as IOI, Musang King, Black Thorn, Red Prawn, D2, and D24 — all at reasonable and competitive prices. Most of the durians sold here are locally grown," he said.

'Spice & Soul Of Malaysia' To Boost F&B Sector And Tourism

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- 'Spice & Soul of Malaysia', a gastronomy and culture-driven initiative, has the potential to stimulate the country's food and beverage (F&B) segment and contribute to national economic growth. Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director-General (Promotion II) Lee Thai Hung said that last year, the export value of the segment recorded a 16.1 per cent increase, with the total reaching RM17.19 billion. 'Programmes like 'Spice & Soul of Malaysia' not only help market more local food products internationally and domestically but also have the potential to attract more visitors. 'We are also encouraging greater participation from industry players, including hotels and restaurants, to showcase the diversity of Malaysian cuisine,' he said at a press conference after officiating the programme here today. Held for the first time, 'Spice & Soul of Malaysia' is a strategic initiative by Tourism Malaysia to promote the country's tourism campaign for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026), by highlighting its cultural heritage and unique culinary experiences to the world. Among its highlights is the introduction of Midnight Supper, a late-night dining culture that is part of the Malaysian lifestyle, besides participating hotels featuring ethnic-themed food presentations and decorations. Five entities are taking part in the programme -- restaurants under the Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Operators Association (PRESMA), Saloma Kuala Lumpur, Hotel Royal Signature, Hotel Saujana, and Ibis Kuala Lumpur. According to Lee, gastronomy is among the key factors tourists consider when choosing their travel destination. 'When someone travels, food is a primary element they seek. Through the Midnight Supper programme, which highlights Malaysia's late-night dining culture, we are able to showcase the diversity and uniqueness of our local cuisine to visitors.

Zetrix AI to challenge Bursa reprimand over 'misleading' disclosures

KUALA LUMPUR: Zetrix AI Bhd, formerly MyEG Services Bhd, is taking legal action to challenge Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd's public reprimand over alleged misleading statements and failure to comply with a regulatory directive. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said it intends to seek a judicial review of the exchange's decision after consulting its legal advisers. "The company and its board of directors, after consultation with the company's lawyers, will be seeking a judicial review on the public reprimand," it said, adding that further updates would be provided as necessary. The reprimand, issued yesterday, centres on announcements made by Zetrix AI in July and September 2023, which Bursa said were neither factual nor accurate, in breach of Paragraphs 9.35A(1)(a) and (b) of the Main Market Listing Requirements. Zetrix AI also allegedly failed to comply with a regulatory instruction under Paragraph 2.23(1) to clarify an earlier statement by Aug 16, 2023, despite a formal directive issued on Aug 15. The announcement in question stated that the Finance Ministry had approved the company's appointment as a government revenue collection agent and online service provider. However, Bursa found that the statement, issued on July 7, was inconsistent with a letter from the Home Affairs Ministry dated July 4. The regulator said that instead of issuing a correction, the company continued to maintain the same claims in follow-up announcements on Sept 13 and 14, even after questions were raised about its ongoing role in processing foreign worker permit renewals beyond the expiry of its concession in May 2023. In connection with the findings, Bursa imposed a RM150,000 fine on each of the seven directors involved, comprising RM100,000 for the inaccurate disclosures and RM50,000 for failing to comply with the clarification directive. Those penalised include group managing director Wong Thean Soon, executive chairman Datuk Norraesah Mohamad, as well as Datuk Mohd Jimmy Wong Abdullah, Wong Kok Chau, Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, Datuk Mohd Jeffrey Joakim and Mohaini Mohd Yusof. Bursa said the directors had failed in their fiduciary duties despite being aware of the inconsistencies, stressing that timely and truthful disclosure is fundamental to preserving market integrity and investor trust.
