The data from the survey is used by researchers to understand the relationship between disease risk factors and risk conditions such as obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and more.
'We're just looking to get a better idea of the overall health of Canadians,' said site manager Kelsey Wolfenden.
Participants are anywhere between one and 79 years of age.
'We go through some questionnaires about the consumption of fish and shellfish, water habits,' Wolfenden said.
Measurements, blood pressure
'We do body measurements, height, weight, and waist circumference. We also take a blood pressure measurement. And we do also collect blood and urine samples for analysis.'
The survey is now in its eighth cycle and will continue until spring 2027.
The goal is to have a total of 400 participants. In all, 16 locations across Canada have been selected to participate in the survey and officials want to remind everyone that StatsCan takes the privacy of Canadians very seriously.
'All of the information is confidential,' Wolfenden said.
'When the participants complete the survey, they are also provided the results … Some of the results are immediately available, and then everything else we will either send to them or is uploaded to a confidential portal where they can access the results.'

Weight loss medications like Ozempic linked to eating disorders in boys and men: study

Prescription weight loss medication use has been linked to significantly higher rates of eating disorders in adolescent boys and men, according to a new study. Led by Kyle Ganson, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto's faculty of social work, the study focuses on an often overlooked population and raises new concerns about the use of high-profile medications like Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss. 'While these medications are typically prescribed for diabetes or obesity, their off-label use for weight loss has become popular,' Ganson said in a news release from the University of Toronto. 'Our findings underscore potential psychological implications for young men.' The study analyzed survey data from 1,543 boys and men from Canada and the U.S. who were between the ages of 15 and 35. While only 1.2 per cent of the sample reported using prescription weight loss medication in the past 12 months, they were much more likely to report eating disorder attitudes and behaviours than others, such as loss of control while eating (63.2 per cent versus 36.2 per cent), binge eating (63.2 per cent versus 34.1 per cent) and purging via vomiting (15.8 per cent versus 5.6 per cent). The study also found that boys and men who used the medication were typically older, had a higher body mass index, and were more likely to identify as not being white or heterosexual. 'Boys and men are frequently left out of the conversation about eating disorders and body image pressures, but this study makes clear that they are not immune to the risks,' Ganson said. The study was published earlier this month in the journal Eating Behaviors. 'There is a greater need to describe the prevalence of use among understudied populations, as well as identify associations with eating disorder attitudes and behaviours,' the study explained. 'Health and mental health care professionals should be cognizant of the associations found in this study to ensure proper eating disorder assessment and intervention are provided to individuals, including boys and men, who use prescription weight loss medication.'

Heat warning up for B.C.'s north coast, persisting until Tuesday

An Environment Canada map shows a heat warning in place for B.C.'s north coast. VICTORIA — Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the inland regions of British Columbia's north coast, saying there is a moderate risk to public health. It says daytime temperatures are expected to be near 30 degrees Celsius with overnight lows in the mid-teens. The weather office says the elevated temperatures are expected to persist until Tuesday night, returning to seasonal values on Wednesday. It says health risks are higher for seniors, people who live alone and those with pre-existing conditions including diabetes, heart disease and respiratory diseases. Environment Canada is encouraging family and friends to check on those who are at higher risk, noting people with mental illness, substance-use disorders and those with limited mobility may also be more vulnerable. It suggests people watch for the impacts of heat illness, including heavy sweating, rashes, cramps or fainting, and that they take steps to keep their house cool. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 21, 2025.
