Colorado football targets four key 2026 commitments ahead of early July decisions

USA Today5 days ago

Whether the outcomes are positive or not, the Colorado Buffaloes are nearing a pivotal stretch in their 2026 recruiting campaign.
Head coach Deion Sanders, although currently away from the team, has a pair of three-star commitments already in the fold — tight end Gavin Mueller from Illinois and defensive lineman Domata Peko Jr. — but that list is likely to grow in the coming weeks. Several highly touted prospects are expected to announce their college commitments soon, with four Colorado targets announcing their decisions by July 12.
Here is a breakdown of the four recruits who could potentially become the next additions to Colorado's 2026 class:
4-star OL Deacon Schmitt
Commitment date: June 28
The top in-state product per 247Sports, Deacon Schmitt, is set to choose between Colorado, Alabama and Oklahoma. Schmitt is from Windsor, Colorado, which is just a short drive from Boulder. He could choose to stay close to home and become an immediate fan favorite.
"The environment is always a blast!" Schmitt told On3. "Growing up in Colorado, I have been around Boulder a lot! The opportunity to become a hometown hero is very special to me. I love CU in general. Everyone there is awesome and they are working on something very special!"
3-star OL Tripp Skewes
Commitment date: July 1
Skewes is another in-state product, but played his high school ball south of Boulder, closer to downtown Denver. The 6-foot-7, 300-pound offensive tackle is narrowing his focus to Colorado, Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Texas Tech. After visiting all four schools this summer, the Buffs appear to have momentum thanks to their proximity.
5-star WR Cederian Morgan
Commitment date: July 2
Morgan can be a game-changing receiver at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. He ranks as one of the elite pass catchers in the 2026 class. His recent visit to Colorado was a surprise, perhaps indicating increased interest between the two parties. Landing him would be a signature recruiting victory for Sanders, who typically is good for at least one big splash per recruiting cycle.
4-star LB Rodney Colton Jr.
Commitment: July 12
With depth at linebacker being a big priority, Colton would be an impact addition for the Buffs. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound recruit recently wrapped up a visit to Boulder and will choose between Colorado, Penn State, Florida State, UCLA and Ole Miss.
July could be a transformative month for a Colorado recruiting class that only has two commitments through mid-June.

Wisconsin basketball offers four-star in-state class of 2027 small forward

Wisconsin basketball extended an offer to four-star class of 2027 small forward Jack Kohnen following its advanced Camp on Thursday. Kohnen, a 6-foot-5, 170-pound forward, is one of three class of 2027 recruits to earn an offer from Wisconsin following its annual camp at the Kohl Center on Thursday, joining wing Deuce McDuffie and combo guard Jalen Brown. 247Sports composite ranking considers the Slinger, Wisconsin, native as the No. 94 overall recruit, No. 25 small forward and No. 4 player from his home state of Wisconsin in the class of 2027. It lists him as a four-star prospect. On3, meanwhile, lists the rising junior as a three-star recruit, with an opportunity to bolster his profile as he adds mileage to his basketball career. Like Brown, who has pocketed several offers despite being a rising junior, Kohnen already owns collegiate offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette and Western Illinois, in addition to his newest opportunity from UW. As a sophomore at Slinger High School, Kohnen spearheaded the Owls' offense with 23.1 points, 12.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.6 blocks off 54.5% shooting from the field and 34.6% from 3 per appearance. Against Oconomowoc on Jan. 25, Kohnen registered 24 points, a season-best 22 rebounds, four steals and four blocks in a 27-point win. He finished with at least 25 points in 14 games as a sophomore, showcasing his two-way ability for his size. The Badgers' proximity to Kohnen's hometown, especially compared to that of the Hawkeyes or Cyclones, may become a separator as he continues to step toward his collegiate career. As of June 27, only four-star small forward Donovan Davis, four-star shooting guard Dooney Johnson and four-star Brown possess higher in-state rankings. Alabama lands commitment from local standout, 2026 in-state linebacker

On Friday night, the Alabama Crimson Tide landed a commitment from a local product, as in-state standout Zay Hall announced that he had committed to the program. Hall is the sixth different player to commit to Alabama so far this week, as well as the third within the past two days alongside the four-star duo of Ezavier Crowell and Mack Sutter. At the moment, Hall is currently considered as the nation's No. 1,148 overall prospect in the 2026 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. A three-star prospect, Hall is also ranked as the nation's No. 127 overall linebacker, as well as the No. 55 player in the state of Alabama where he attends Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa. The three-star prospect is the first linebacker commit in Alabama's class, as well as the fourth from in-state where he is joined by the aforementioned Crowell (Jackson), Zyan Gibson (Gadsden City), and Kamhariyan Johnson (Muscle Shoals). Alabama's class has now cracked the Top 10 of the 247Sports Team Rankings as well, sitting at No. 10 with a total of 13 commitments. James Harrison says Steelers could cut Aaron Rodgers midseason under one condition

Everyone has an opinion on what the Aaron Rodgers-led Steelers are capable of — but the legendary James Harrison might've just dropped the boldest prediction yet. On a recent episode of the Nightcap podcast, Harrison argued that Rodgers could be released — under one condition: Pittsburgh starts losing. "If [the Steelers] start losing and it's looking like they ain't gonna make above .500, I think it gets real ugly, real fast," Harrison said. "To the point where they may just be like, 'You know what, let's let this dude go midseason. For Aaron, let's just get him outta here and put one of these other quarterbacks in.' Mike [Tomlin] ain't going nowhere." While midseason struggles leading to a major change under center aren't unheard of — releasing Rodgers seems extremely unlikely, especially if his mentorship of rookie Will Howard continues to show positive signs of growth. Rodgers has been candid about his likely retirement after 2025 — but if Harrison's prediction comes to fruition, his career may not end on his terms after all.
