Ballon d'Or 2025 Rankings: Top 5 contenders after the Club World Cup

Business Upturn19-07-2025
The 2025 Ballon d'Or race is heating up as the football world gears up for the prestigious ceremony on September 22, 2025, at Paris' Théâtre du Châtelet. With the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup now in the books, the rankings for football's ultimate individual prize have seen some dramatic shifts. From dazzling youngsters to seasoned superstars, here are the top five contenders vying for the Golden Ball, based on their performances throughout the 2024-25 season. 1. Ousmane Dembélé
Ousmane Dembélé has emerged as the leading candidate for the 2025 Ballon d'Or, and it's easy to see why. The Paris Saint-Germain star has been a force this season, leading his team to a Champions League triumph and a Club World Cup final appearance. With an impressive tally of 33 goals and 15 assists across all competitions, Dembélé's impact has been undeniable. His pivotal performances, including a goal against Bayern Munich and an assist in the Club World Cup semifinal thrashing of Real Madrid, have solidified his position at the top. Despite PSG's loss to Chelsea in the final, Dembélé's consistency and big-game mentality make him a strong favorite to claim the Golden Ball, potentially becoming only the fourth player in 17 years to break the Messi-Ronaldo dominance, joining Luka Modric, Karim Benzema, and Rodri. 2. Lamine Yamal
At just 18 years old, Lamine Yamal is making waves as one of football's brightest young stars. The FC Barcelona wonderkid has dazzled with 18 goals and 21 assists in the 2024-25 season, leading La Liga in successful dribbles with an average of 4.6 per match. His flair and maturity shone through in La Liga and the Champions League, though Barcelona's absence from the Club World Cup slightly dented his chances. Still, Yamal's individual brilliance and key contributions to Barça's domestic double keep him firmly in the top tier. If voters prioritize potential and impact, Yamal could make history as the youngest Ballon d'Or winner ever. 3. Raphinha
Raphinha has been a key figure in Barcelona's La Liga and Copa del Rey triumphs, finishing the season with 18 goals and 11 assists in La Liga alone, plus a joint-top 13 goals in the Champions League. His standout moments include a hat-trick against Bayern Munich and decisive contributions in El Clásico and against Dortmund. While Barcelona's absence from the Club World Cup limited his global exposure, Raphinha's creativity and consistency make him a strong contender, often ranked in the top five. 4. Mohamed Salah
Mohamed Salah's 2024-25 season was nothing short of historic, with 34 goals and 23 assists in the Premier League alone, leading Liverpool to the title under Arne Slot. His 47 goal involvements set a new Premier League record, and he claimed the Golden Boot. However, Liverpool's early Champions League exit and lack of international success in 2025 have slightly weakened his case. Despite a late-season dip in form, Salah's sheer output in Europe's most competitive league keeps him in the conversation, though his chances of topping the list are fading. 5. Kylian Mbappé
Kylian Mbappé was expected to dominate the 2025 Ballon d'Or race after his blockbuster move to Real Madrid, where he scored 40 goals and 5 assists in his debut season. A hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League was a highlight, but Real Madrid's trophyless domestic campaign and early Champions League exit hurt his prospects. His struggles in the Club World Cup, particularly against his former club PSG, further derailed his bid for the Golden Ball. While still a world-class talent, Mbappé's lack of team silverware this season has pushed him down the rankings.

Liverpool 'to make formal offer' for Alexander Isak this week as £65.5m Luis Diaz transfer is agreed

Liverpool have agreed a deal that is expected to help fund a bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The Reds have already bolstered their attack with the signing of Hugo Ekitike but remain interested in bringing Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, to the club this summer. Despite approaching Newcastle over signing of the Sweden international for around £120million, the reigning champions of England were quickly told that the striker was not for sale. However, the transfer saga took a stunning twist last week when Isak asked to leave Newcastle and was subsequently left out of the squad that travelled to Asia for the pre-season tour. Now, the Magpies are bracing themselves for a formal offer from Liverpool for Isak this week. According to reports, the Merseyside giants have been given the green light to launch a bid for the striker as Luis Diaz's exit is imminent. Liverpool have agreed to sell the Colombia international to Bayern Munich for a fee said to be in the region of £65.5m. The money from the sale is expected to fund a bid for Isak. While the message from the Newcastle hierarchy has been they want to keep their best players, if Liverpool's offer approaches £150m mark and Isak pushes to leave St James' Park then that stance could soften. Regardless of the outcome, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is well aware his side must strengthen after missing out on a number of key targets - including Ekitike. Speaking after the pre-season defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, he said: 'We're not deluded. We know we need to bring players in. 'We've known that for a long time. We did a lot of work (at the end of last season), we knew what we wanted. 'But it's been a challenging transfer window. Let's see what we can do.'

Liverpool's next signing is starting to unveil

Liverpool's next signing is starting to unveil and it's not Alexander Isak. Of course the Swede is still a priority target for the Reds. But his saga could drag on for a while. This doesn't mean that Liverpool won't sign him, merely that given it's a deal of huge magnitude, it's going to take a long time to iron out the details. With Joe Gomez travelling back home from pre-season due to an injury, it has exposed a great need at centre-back for the Reds. Liverpool have already lost Jarell Quansah this summer, and they now have just two senior centre-back on tour in pre-season in Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. This has seen Slot play Luca Stephenson, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas at centre-back. It's becoming very apparent after the four goals conceded against AC Milan that this situation is not tenable going into the season. Liverpool need more depth in the centre-back positions, especially considering Konate and Gomez are both injury prone. This is therefore the obvious next transfer Hughes is going to sort out. And while the first name everyone will gravitate to is Marc Guehi, he might not be the clear choice. In fact, Liverpool may already be targeting someone else in the position, who could be an even better fit.

Stats – Breaking down Barcelona debutant's performance against Vissel Kobe

Barcelona's summer signing, Roony Bardghji, announced himself in style during his debut against Vissel Kobe, scoring a well-taken goal in a 3-1 victory. The 19-year-old winger, brought in with plenty of expectation, played just 45 minutes but was one of the standout performers in what was a convincing display by the Catalans. Bardghji had 30 touches during his time on the pitch and completed 16 out of 19 passes, recording an impressive 84% accuracy. He managed three shots on goal, created one clear chance, and completed both of his dribble attempts, making him the most successful dribbler of the match. He also played two passes into the final third, made one clearance, recovered the ball once, and won two of his three ground duels. Influential against Vissel Kobe From the moment he stepped onto the field, the youngster looked confident and involved. Roony Bardghji made quite an impact. (Photo by) He had two early chances to get on the scoresheet, first with a powerful strike from outside the area that was blocked by a defender, and then with a close-range attempt following a smart pass from Marcus Rashford, but the finish narrowly missed. Still, Bardghji showed hunger and maturity by not letting the missed opportunities affect his rhythm. His goal, when it finally came, was the result of an intelligent and composed move. Rashford played a perfectly weighted ball behind the defence for Robert Lewandowski, who used his experience to square the ball to Bardghji at the edge of the box. With remarkable composure for someone his age, the Swedish winger calmly slotted the ball into the bottom-right corner. Beyond the goal, Bardghji's energy, vision, and confidence on the ball gave Barcelona fans a glimpse of what he could offer this season. For a 19-year-old making his first appearance, it was a performance full of promise, and if this is just the beginning, Bardghji may prove to be one of the club's smartest acquisitions in recent years.
