3 must-do passport checks ahead of your holiday this year

Glasgow Times2 days ago
Google searches for "express passport" have surged by a staggering 323%, revealing just how many people are scrambling to get holiday-ready at the last opportunity.
According to a recent Post Office survey 25% of Brits admit they never check the validity of their passport when booking a trip.
This oversight can lead to denied boarding, trip cancellations, or being turned away at border control, often at a significant personal cost.
To avoid stress or disappointment, last-minute holiday provider Travel Republic has revealed three key checks every traveller should make before heading on a last-minute holiday this summer.
1. Check when your passport was issued
More importantly, check it's less than 10 years before your departure date.
Those travelling to any country in the EU, or Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland should ensure their passports were issued less than 10 years before their departure dates.
For example, if you are flying on July 10 2025, your passport must have been issued after July 10 2015. This rule applies regardless of the passport's expiry date.

2. Make sure you have at least 3 months' validity from your return date
Your passport must also be valid for at least three months after your intended return date when travelling to Europe or the Schengen area.
For example, if you return home on 1 August 2025, your passport must be valid until at least 1 November 2025.
3. Make sure your passport is undamaged and readable
A passport must be in good physical condition to be accepted. Even minor damage, particularly if it means personal details page unreadable, can cause issues at check-in or border control.
Gemma Brown, Head of Ground Product & Partnerships at Travel Republic, says: 'The likelihood is that travel insurance providers would not cover any costs associated with invalid or expired passports, as it's down to the traveller to triple-check their documentation is correct.
Your passport is your most important travel document - it's worth taking your time to get right!
Before submitting your application check:
- your photo meets all requirements
- all personal details are correct
- supporting documents are ready
- payment details are accurate pic.twitter.com/mkzLHN5ZpY — His Majesty's Passport Office (@HM_Passport) June 16, 2025
'Our advice would be to ensure that your passport is within the 10-year issue date and is valid for at least six months from the date of departure to ensure you will be accepted into most countries.
"Regardless of passport rules, it's important for all travellers to research the country they plan to visit and ensure they know what travel documentation is required upon entering and leaving. You can find foreign travel advice on the government website to make sure you have everything covered.'

Renew your passport early to avoid disruptions
With thousands of UK travellers experiencing airport heartbreak over the last year due to non-compliant passports, checking your documents ahead of summer travel plans is essential.
If your passport doesn't meet the updated rules and outlined conditions, renewing early could be the key to a seamless getaway instead of missing out on your long-awaited trip.
Over half a million UK adults paid for express passports for their summer holiday
Getting a deal on a last-minute holiday is all well and good, but so is making sure your passport is up-to-date. The average cost of a 1-week fast track and 1-day premium passport application is £194.25, and according to data from HM Passport Office, over half a million applications were made in 2023, which would total an £111 million spend.

The US research analysed data from 32 previous studies that tracked people's wellbeing before and after a holiday from work. It found they took more than six weeks to return to usual stress levels — double the three weeks recorded previously. No specific type of holiday was best but people were happier if they could disconnect from work and do physical activities such as hiking, sightseeing or snorkelling. Longer breaks were typically more relaxing but the benefits recorded afterwards dropped off more steeply. Study author Ryan Grant, a PhD student at the University of Georgia, said: 'Vacations create longer-lasting benefits than previously thought. 'Job demands and job stress are on the rise but people think that they can't take time off because they don't want to look bad or lose out on an opportunity for promotion. 'We think working more is better, but we actually perform better by taking care of ourselves. "We need to break up these intense periods of work with intense periods of rest and recuperation.' Writing in the Journal of Applied Psychology, he said of holiday highs: 'The decrease is not as steep and fleeting as previously thought. Five stunning, little-known holiday destinations 'If you're not at work but you're thinking about work on vacation, you might as well be at the office. 'Vacations are one of the few opportunities we get to fully just disconnect from work.' Most full-time employees in the UK are entitled to 28 days of annual leave per year. Brits go abroad a combined 86million times a year and millions of us also take staycations at home. Brits warned about Brexit rule that imposes 3 year ban

Going away is exciting, but before setting off, it's important for anyone planning to visit certain countries to be well-informed. This is especially true in the post-Brexit era, which has seen the introduction of new regulations in recent years. "Brexit has ruined this country, and now the majority of Britons thinks so too." RT if you are that — BladeoftheSun (@BladeoftheS) June 24, 2025 Before the UK left the EU, British passport holders could enter countries without needing to get their travel document stamped, and were allowed to stay for any duration. However, under current rules, UK travellers are limited to a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180 days in any Schengen Area country. The Schengen area is made up of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden, as well as four non-EU nations: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Additionally, travellers' passports must have a "date of issue" within the last 10 years before their arrival date and an "expiry date" that is at least three months after their planned departure from the Schengen area. Recommended reading: According to Foreign Office advice, failing to comply with these regulations when visiting Spain or other Schengen countries, such as Greece, France, and Italy, may result in a lengthy ban. The Foreign Office guidance for Greece warns: "If you're travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days." "If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years."

With nearly half of Brits (48%) planning a domestic getaway, and one in three saying mobile coverage influences their destination, upgraded 4G and 5G coverage is helping travellers stay online. Connecting Scotland's wildest corners O2 has boosted 4G and 5G network capacity in more than 13,000 Scottish postcodes in the last 12 months, including some of the UK's most remote destinations. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Isle of Skye, Scotland The upgrades extend to popular tourist centres, with 782 upgraded postcodes in Edinburgh and major improvements in coverage across the Highlands. On top of this, O2 has recently installed small cells in Perth, as well as switching on its next-generation 5G standalone network in Stirling. O2 has recently brought reliable connectivity to many unique Scottish tourist destinations that previously had none. These include: · Corrour Station, the UK's highest and most remote railway stop, famously featured in Trainspotting · Barra Airport, the only airport in the world with a scheduled beach runway and tidal timetable Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Rebecca, a freelance illustrator based in London, is heading to Scotland this summer with family · Loch Ossian Eco Hostel and Glen Affric Hostel, reachable only by foot or bike The announcement comes as new research commissioned by O2 found 48% of Brits are planning a staycation in Scotland this summer. Amid the cost-of-living crisis, 41% are staying in the UK to save money, while 25% are opting for Scotland so their pets can join the adventure. Cultural influences also play a role, with 13% inspired by TV and films shot in Scotland – from Outlander to The Traitors and Trainspotting. Off-grid adventures, on-grid coverage The research also reveals that while many Brits are eager to get off the beaten track, they don't want to go entirely off-grid. 62% worry about getting lost without GPS, while over half (55%) fear not being able to find or contact their accommodation. Nearly half (48%) are concerned about locating nearby places to eat, drink or explore, and 43% say streaming music or podcasts is key to their holiday experience. For families, almost a third (31%) say reliable mobile signal is essential to keeping children entertained during travel. With the average Scottish 'staycationer' planning to spend an average of £721, and 28% of UK holidaymakers planning a trip north of the border, Scotland could see a tourism boost of more than £5 billion this summer alone. Thanks to improved 4G and 5G coverage across the country, even remote getaways are now better supported by strong, reliable mobile connectivity. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Dr Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering, at O2 said: 'Scotland has always been one of the most beautiful and remote destinations in the UK but now it's better connected than ever before. Thanks to O2's Mobile Transformation Plan, whether they're hiking the Highlands, flying into Barra, or visiting a rural island, visitors can stay connected when and where it matters most.' Rebecca, a freelance illustrator based in London, is heading to Scotland this summer, and said: 'As a nature-loving, free spirit living in London, I'm excited to be swapping city life for Scotland with my family this summer, seeking outdoors adventures and showing my son what independent travel looks like in the UK. We'll be escaping central London and taking a train up to Glasgow, exploring the Trossachs and then off to Oban to catch a ferry to Tiree. I'm looking for ultimate escapism: fishing, surfing and small island life – but with a 10-year-old and a packed itinerary, we'll definitely need some Netflix films and playlists on tap for some restful down time! My goal is to switch off but be able to plan ahead, so having connectivity on a trip like this is really important.' These upgrades are part of O2's Mobile Transformation Plan, which will see the operator invest approximately £700m this year to future-proof its mobile network. The plan is focused on expanding 4G and 5G coverage, a dedicated small cells rollout to boost capacity in dense urban areas, and innovative solutions to address persistent network pain points including along railway lines, at airports, on motorways, and in stadiums and arenas.
