Jeremy Clarkson 'forced to cull farm's cows' after devastating disease outbreak

Metro3 days ago
Jeremy Clarkson has told followers he's 'absolutely devastated' after learning they have a case of bovine tuberculosis on Diddly Squat farm.
Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is one of the biggest challenges facing the cattle farming industry in the UK and all infected animals have to be put down.
The former Top Gear presenter, 65, shared news that the infectious disease had been detected in his cattle, in a post to X on Thursday (July 31).
'Bad news from Diddly Squat,' Clarkson wrote. 'We've gone down with TB. Everyone here is absolutely devastated.'
When Clarkson clarified that by TB he meant bTB, @knox_ryder77 replied saying they hoped the cows recovered soon. Clarkson then explained: 'They have to be culled. It's the law.'
Meanwhile, @robjohnsonrj1 shared their commiserations in the comments sections, writing: 'Been in that situation in the past! Devastating as the heard could well have to be culled. Feel for you JC let's hope the offending beast can be quarantined and culled.'
Clarkson replied to share that the 'offending animal' that had tested positive for TB was pregnant with twins.
When a follower asked after Endgame, an Aberdeen Angus bull that Clarkson bought in his Amazon Prime show Clarkson's Farm, the TV presenter said the cow's test had been 'inconclusive'.
He added: 'I couldn't bear it if we lost him.'
Clarkson had previously saved Pepper the cow from being sent off to an abbatoir, after initially going back on a promise he made to care for her to Rosie, the five-year-old daughter of Pepper's former owner.
The TV presenter turned famed farmer and his partner Lisa Hogan were then left heartbroken when a group of piglets on the farm suddenly died.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk and other press, Clarkson shared: 'You don't say, 'Let's buy some pigs and hope they die,' I've always liked pigs.'
Under British law, animals with bTB have to be put down because the disease is extremely contagious and can demolish large herds of cows.
bTB is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis. It can also infect badgers, deer, goats, pigs, llamas and alpacas – leading to the infamous case of Geronimo in 2021.
Cattle are tested for the disease because it is zoonotic, so can pass to humans, so staying on top of it limits the risk to the population.
The UK's meat and dairy products would also not be accepted for exports if we didn't have comprehensive bTB testing.
The disease spreads slowly in cattle, so they often do not exhibit symptoms before it is picked up.
'I thought it would be fun to have them, and then they just died in alarming numbers.
'It was just terrible. I mean they still die, but we're getting more used to it now, we're a bit more robust.'
He added: 'We're a bit stronger at dealing with it now. But it was a very heart-breaking time.'
Clarkson continued by saying that he's also 'very fond' of his goats and cows on the farm, despite Cooper telling him to 'kill' the goats to 'sell' and 'eat'.
'But I actually thought, no I want to keep them because I like them, but the pigs you have to sell them, otherwise nobody would keep pigs if you didn't eat them. More Trending
'There would be no cows or pigs in the country if people didn't eat them.'
He added: 'So in order to have the animals you have to eat them at the correct time, and it is weird, because you love them and you give birth to them and you nurture them and you feed them, you take care of them, you get the vet round when they're poorly.
'And then you kill them and it is a strange place to be when you haven't been a farmer all your life but we are getting better at it, we definitely are.'
Metro contacted Jeremy Clarkson's representatives for further comment.

ALEXANDRA SHULMAN'S NOTEBOOK: Marvellous Michelle will be utterly fab... as me

As a general rule, fashion biopics are hysterical, overblown dramas filled with characters far too ludicrous to be accurate depictions of the inspiring creatives they're based on. So when I heard there was a film in the works about the late Isabella Blow – the maverick fashion editor and early muse and associate of Alexander McQueen – I assumed the worst. But The Queen Of Fashion, which has just wrapped, might be an exception. There's a first-rate cast and it has been endorsed by many of Issy's closest friends and collaborators. The excellent Andrea Riseborough is cast as the eccentric and visionary Issy, and – trumpet sound here – apparently I am played, as editor of British Vogue, by Michelle Dockery. Dockery is one of my favourite British actresses. She can display hauteur and brutality in equal measure. As Lady Mary in Downton Abbey she perfected the cut-glass accent, while in Guy Ritchie 's The Gentleman she was transfixing as the drug baron's hard-bitten Cockney wife. So I am delighted by her casting. In truth, it's not only her acting skills I'm thrilled about. She's just fabulous looking. Who wouldn't want to be portrayed by this elegant beauty? I know nothing of the movie's storyline but I strongly suspect my character won't be treated kindly. Although I was a huge supporter of Issy, introduced her to Vogue and gave her licence and encouragement to produce the stories she was keen on, her own recollections differed. She ultimately saw me as someone who let her down. If the film takes that angle, at least being played by someone as attractive as Dockery will be some compensation. Stop treating Mr Fox as fantastic Last Monday, while we were away, guests staying in our house sent me pictures of several rooms. They showed shoes scattered everywhere, including a pair of half-destroyed sheepskin slippers lying on our bed. One of my Adidas Gazelle sneakers had been dragged from one room to another and torn apart, while the guest's own shoes were in pieces. She was sure the garden door hadn't been left open at any time and there was no sign of a human intruder – nothing of value, such as our laptops, had been taken. Even more oddly, no food in the kitchen had been attacked. We still don't know what happened, but assume the wretched foxes that plague our lives managed to get through the cat flap. Some people have fond feelings toward the vulpine creatures. Not me. I have previous form with them. A few years ago, I discovered one in the living room sitting calmly on the sofa watching Netflix. Once it had been shooed out, I stupidly sat down where it had been and promptly contracted the most painful condition I have ever had – fox scabies. Anyone who thinks these are sweet little creatures who should be fed and cared for is insane. Unfortunately, round our parts they are now as prolific as squirrels. As is the trail of rubbish they leave across the back gardens and pavements. AI can't capture our true beauty I wrote a few months ago about how some modelling agencies are starting to licence the rights to images of their models for use in AI. Then, last week, a story broke about a flawless AI-generated model in a Guess advert in Vogue. While AI models will no doubt become more popular, it's unlikely that they will replace models at the top end of the industry. Although being a clothes horse is the core of the job, a large reason why the most successful models have got where they are is their personality. Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Kate Moss are all bright women who bring a large dollop of character along with them. Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford (pictured), Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Kate Moss are all bright women who bring a large dollop of character along with them. They have become famous because they are interesting and look fantastic. AI can generate a flawless looking model but she won't exist off the page. And I doubt her looks will have that coveted kink, the slight 'strangeness in proportion' that philosopher Francis Bacon claimed is key to true beauty. See a playlist? I'd rather roll with it I'm off to see Oasis tonight and someone's offered to send me the playlist in advance. Why would I want to know the song line-up? Despite bingeing on Instagram snippets of the reunion tour, I have avoided finding out whether Don't Look Back In Anger or Wonderwall is the encore, or whether they will play Champagne Supernova. I've enjoyed prepping myself with lesser-known songs, just in case. Wanting to know a concert's playlist in advance is as baffling a concept to me as reading a restaurant's menu before you arrive. Anticipation is such a vital part of the experience. Put to shame – by a cool 11-year-old The young of today are different, that's for sure. I took an 11-year-old to see Jurassic World Rebirth at the cinema, with assurances that should he find it too frightening we could leave. As character after character was threatened and devoured by terrifying beasts, I kept glancing at my companion to check he was OK. He sat impassively through it all. Meanwhile, I was scared stiff and found the tension as unbearable as England's penalty shoot-out in last Sunday's Euros final. Is Gwynnie really such a mean girl? Amy Odell's biography of Gwyneth Paltrow paints her subject as a mean girl who becomes the toxic boss of Goop. Funny isn't it how it's always female employers who get tarred with this label? I have no idea how Gwyneth ran Goop but I do know it is frequently women leaders who are portrayed as demanding and cruel. And most often their accusers are other women – as the unnamed employees would have been at Goop. So much for the sisterhood. I hope the Isabella Blow biopic doesn't paint a similar picture of me.

Every episode of 'masterpiece' TV series now streaming on Amazon Prime

Every episode of the action drama Station 19 has been added to Amazon Prime Video for streaming. Set in the titular nineteenth station of Seattle Fire Department, the show follows a group of heroic firefighters as they risk their lives and hearts while on and off the job. It was created by Shondaland mastermind Shonda Rhimes, who was also responsible for hit shows Grey's Anatomy and Bridgerton. A number of the show's characters were initially introduced during a 2018 crossover episode of Grey's Anatomy, which served as its backdoor pilot. After airing its first proper episode that same year, it ran for seven seasons before wrapping up in May 2024. As of July 28, the show has been added to Amazon Prime in the UK, where viewers can discover the adventures of Station 19 for themselves. Loyal viewers have continued to heap praise upon Station 19 since the show ended, contributing to its 93% positive audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics were largely positive in their reaction to Season One, with The LA Times describing it as 'a turbocharged melodrama in which twists and surprises transpire with comforting predictability.' Meanwhile, Common Sense Media called it 'soapy, sexy Grey's-Anatomy-in-a-firehouse drama.' This formula obviously connected with viewers, who have enjoyed its combination of high-octane firehouse action and soapy storytelling. Google Reviews user Ειρηνη Μπατρη described it as a 'blazing masterpiece,' writing how it 'keeps the flames of excitement burning from the very first episode to the last.' Meanwhile, Kye May praised its handling of LGBTQ+ issues and representation, describing it as 'more than just a TV show; it is a platform that showcases amazing LGBTQ+ storylines, providing representation that is essential for many viewers. 'I am ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED with this show! I've been into since day one, episode one!' exclaimed Nicole Findlay. The show's cast is led by Jaina Lee Ortiz as station lieutenant Andrea 'Andy' Herrera, who rises through the ranks to become Captain and then fire chief as the series progresses. Other stars include Jason George as Dr. Ben Warren, Grey Damon as Jack Gibson, and Barrett Doss as Victoria Hughes. As a Grey's Anatomy spin-off, the show featured several crossover events over the years, from 2018's backdoor pilot to the Fall City Wildfire of 2024. This comes weeks after the streaming service added the 'sinister' crime thriller Ballard to its catalogue. More Trending Like Station 19, Ballard is a spin-off of a popular USA procedural drama – this one being the gritty crime thriller Bosch. Ballard stars Maggie Q as disgraced LAPD detective Renée Ballard, who leads a team of misfit police officers in their attempt to bring down a well-connected crime syndicate.
