Sarawak women score first win in 15-a-side Selangor rugby tourney
KUCHING (May 6): Sarawak Rugby Union women's team created history after recording its first ever win in a 15-a-side league match beating Universiti Pertahanan National Malaysia (UPNM) 35-5 at the inaugural women's Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) Selangor Rugby Union (KRS) League at Padang Astaka, Petaling Jaya on Saturday.
The win is the first for a Sarawak state rugby team in the 15-a-side format in Peninsular Malaysia.
Led by former Malaysia 7s player and captain Cuthberta Entai, the young Sarawakian side dominated in a one-sided match against a spirited side from UPNM.
The win made up for the 5-29 loss in their first match against Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) the previous weekend.
Winger Amau Siba contributed a hat-trick of tries to be Sarawak's top scorer in the convincing victory but coach Stephen Patrick warned the team must remain grounded and realistic.
'We still have a lot of work to do because this team has never played 15-a-side together. But with time, I believe Sarawak will be the team to watch,' he said.

The latest victory has assured the Sarawak players a place in the knockout round.
They will know who they will clash against after completing the final two league matches.
Sarawak Rugby, which is represented by 28 players, will face Cobra Venom on May 10 and complete their matches with a final game against KL Tigers RFC on May 17.
The league competition, which is supported by the federal Ministry of Youth and Sports and Malaysia Rugby, is jointly organised by the MSNS and KRS. MSNS-KRS Rugby League Sarawak Rugby Union women's rugby

Farizal Marlias comments on JDT-Selangor rivalry
KUALA LUMPUR: Can Selangor give Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) a good fight in the Charity Shield on Aug 8? Many Selangor fans do not think so following the Red Giants' unimpressive performance against an ageing Asia Warriors last Sunday in a friendly at MBPJ Stadium. The Red Giants could only come up with a draw and never scored a goal, and their performance left Selangor coach Katsuhito Kinoshi saying: "The result was not good enough. I'm not happy. I'm completely not happy." Former national goalkeeper Farizal Marlias, who is now an Astro pundit, was asked about the JDT-Selangor rivalry during the M-League launch at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. "JDT have the best first eleven and are well prepared," he said. "But when it comes to Selangor, I'm not so sure. From what I've seen recently, their performance is a little concerning. Still, I hope both teams can bring a positive impact to our league." The former JDT player said the upcoming JDT versus Selangor match will be more than just an on-pitch rivalry. "I hope it will be an entertaining match because everyone knows when these two teams meet, things usually get very intense and heated. So, I think that atmosphere will be something to be experienced. "At the same time, it's important to show high-quality football. We know both teams have quality, and I hope the Super League gets off to a great start," said Farizal.

Sarawakian golfer Mirabel Ting clinches maiden pro win
The 19-year-old from Miri delivered a commanding performance to secure a nine-shot victory. — Bernama file photo KUCHING (Aug 1): Sarawakian golf star Mirabel Ting Ern Hui achieved a major milestone in her blossoming career, capturing her first professional title just weeks after turning pro on July 3. The 19-year-old from Miri delivered a commanding performance to secure a nine-shot victory at the PGM Royal Pahang Championship, held at the Pahang Royal Golf Club, finishing with a three-day total of 14-under-par 202. Mirabel was in control from start to finish in the 54-hole tournament, opening with a 67, then surging ahead with a brilliant 65 on Wednesday to take a five-shot lead into the final round. She closed with a composed two-under 70 on Thursday and was the only player in the women's field to shoot under par in all three rounds. This marks Mirabel's second career win on the PGM Tour, her first being at the Fortuner Cup in June 2023, when she was still an amateur. The win also earned her RM10,000 in prize money. Veteran pro Aretha Pan finished runner-up with a five-under 211 (68-69-74), while fellow Sarawakian Zulaikah Nasser claimed third place at even-par 216 (73-72-71). Reflecting on her win, Mirabel paid a heartfelt tribute to her late grandfather, Ng Siaw Pheng, who introduced her to the sport. 'He always hoped I'd turn pro and compete at the highest level,' she told the New Straits Times. 'He was always there for me and Malcolm (my brother) whenever we returned to Miri.' Mirabel said she was thrilled to be playing at home and alongside her brother. 'This win means a lot,' she added. The former world No. 2 amateur made her professional debut earlier this month at the Amundi Evian Championship in France, one of the LPGA's five majors. Although she missed the cut, she has now bounced back impressively on home soil. Mirabel Ting Ern Hui PGM Royal Pahang Championship

Mirabel cruises to maiden pro win
KUALA LUMPUR: Golfer Mirabel Ting made an instant impact in the professional ranks by romping to a commanding nine-shot victory at the PGM Royal Pahang Championship — barely a month into her pro career. The 19-year-old Sarawakian was in complete control throughout the 54-hole tournament at the Pahang Royal Golf Club, closing with a steady two-under 70 on Thursday for a winning total of 14-under 202. Mirabel, who turned professional earlier this month after leaving Florida State University with a year of eligibility left, had set the pace early with rounds of 67 and a brilliant 65 on Wednesday to build a five-shot cushion heading into the final round. She was the only player in the women's field to shoot under par across all three rounds. It was Mirabel's second victory on PGM Tour, after having won the Fortuner Cup in June last year. Aretha Pan took runner-up honours on five-under 211 (68-69-74), followed by Zulaikah Nasser in third at even-par 216 (73-72-71). The former world No. 2 amateur paid tribute to her late grandfather Ng Siaw Pheng — the person who first introduced her to golf. "He always hoped I'd turn pro and compete at the highest level. He was always there for me and Malcolm (her brother) whenever we returned to Miri," said Mirabel, who cashed in RM10,000 in prize money. "I'm thrilled to be playing at home and alongside my brother. This win means a lot." Her professional debut came at the Amundi Evian Championship in France earlier this month, where she missed the cut in the LPGA major. Meanwhile, the men's event saw Edven Ting prevail in a dramatic sudden-death showdown to end a two-year title drought. Edven, Ben Leong and amateur Nateeshvar Ganesh all finished regulation play tied at 14-under 202, forcing a three-way play-off. The deadlock was only broken on the fifth extra hole, where Edven calmly rolled in a winning putt as Ben faltered. It was Edven's first victory since capturing the Toyota Tour title at Templer Park in 2023.
