However, with stand-in pacer Akash Deep taking a stunning 10-wicket match haul in Bumrah's place, and Mohammed Siraj chipping in with six wickets in the first innings, India turned the tide in style.
The duo picked up 17 of the 20 English wickets as India secured their first-ever Test win at Edgbaston in nine attempts, levelling the series 1-1.
When cameras caught Gambhir smiling post-win, Shastri, in the commentary box, acknowledged the turnaround: 'Don't see that smile too often, but he deserves every bit of it. There is no better feeling for a coach than when you bounce back almost immediately to keep the series alive.'

India's bold selection calls - which also included dropping Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur - paid off handsomely, with the revamped lineup delivering under pressure and reigniting the five-Test series.

Akash Deep Channels Grief Into Greatness And Helps India Create History At Edgbaston
Last Updated: Akash Deep's 10-wicket haul helped India to a record 336-run victory over England in Jasprit Bumrah's absence. India's loss in the first Test against England in Leeds had put the team's bowling unit under the scanner. Jasprit Bumrah & Co. failed to pick all 10 English wickets in the second innings, letting the hosts chase down a daunting 371-run target with relative ease. As the team geared up for the next battle in Birmingham, things looked far from promising. Bumrah, the pace spearhead, sat out of the match due to workload management. The big question loomed – how would India win in his absence when they couldn't manage it with him in the XI? Who would have imagined that a group of young cricketers would script a historic win on English soil – and that too without its stalwarts? But on Sunday, Shubman Gill's Team India answered that question emphatically. They crushed England by 336 runs to level the series 1-1 and register a first-ever Test win at Edgbaston. More significantly, India discovered a way to win without Bumrah, and at the heart of that triumph was Akash Deep. Just seven Tests old, Akash was drafted into the playing XI to share new ball duties with Mohammed Siraj, alongside Prasidh Krishna. The combination raised a few eyebrows. But what unfolded over five days was nothing short of magic. Akash tore through England's batting line-up in both innings, claiming his maiden 10-wicket haul in Test cricket. He became only the second Indian fast bowler after Chetan Sharma to achieve this feat in England. He picked 4 for 88 in the first innings and followed it with a brilliant 6 for 90 in the second. The numbers might make him look like a rookie, but behind those figures lies a story of resilience, heartbreaks, and unshakeable belief. Back home, his father dreamed of seeing him in a secure government job – perhaps a constable or even a peon. Akash would fill out those exam forms, but never truly attempted them. Cricket was his calling, even back then. He left Bihar to pursue his dreams, settling in Durgapur, West Bengal, and playing for United Club in the CAB second division league. Just as things were looking up, tragedy struck. In 2015, within a span of six months, he lost both his father and elder brother. The burden of supporting the family fell on his young shoulders. Still, he kept grinding. His breakthrough came in the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy season where he picked 35 wickets, taking Bengal to the final. Four years later, he made his Test debut in the home series against England. Since then, there's been no looking back. With 25 wickets from 8 Tests, his best – 10/187 – came in Birmingham. Yet, behind the smiles lay more pain. Just two months ago, his elder sister was diagnosed with cancer which he disclosed publicly on Sunday night, after the world got to know about his ability in foreign conditions. 'Every time I had the ball in my hand, her thoughts would cross my mind," he revealed on live TV, holding back tears. 'This performance is dedicated to her. I want to tell her, 'Sis, we are all with you.'" Indeed, the hard work and the grind paid off, portraying him as one of the lethal weapons in India's artillery. But picking him at the right time was the key. Ahead of the second Test, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan had told cricketnext that if India are not playing Bumrah in Birmingham, they should get in Akash Deep. It's safe to say now that his prediction was spot on. 'I think, Akash Deep is a right guy [if Bumrah doesn't play]. He is a very much Shami kind of a bowler who has got a straight seam. He can actually beat the batters with surprise. He has got off the pitch zip. So, he is the guy who should be playing and if Bumrah is not playing, great," Pathan had told CricketNext at a select media interaction. Akash Deep didn't just fill in for Jasprit Bumrah – he announced himself to the world. In the toughest conditions, he rose from personal loss to script a fairytale comeback, proving that grit, heart, and belief can turn dreams into history.

Drake Maye donated his entire wedding to help homeless kids and didn't brag about it
Drake Maye Wedding Goes Viral After He Donates Gifts to Local Children's Shelter. Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-Imagn Images / David Butler II-Imagn Images In a time when the NFL headlines are flooded with arrests, holdouts, and contract drama, one rookie just flipped the script with a story so pure it'll make your heart melt. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, fresh off his wedding to his middle-school sweetheart Ann Michael, quietly donated every single gift from the ceremony, the money, the presents, everything to children's shelters and homeless centers. He didn't post about it, didn't make a statement, he just did it. And we only know thanks to a broadcaster who spilled the tea on air. Drake Maye didn't take a single wedding gift, he gave them all to shelters for kids in need According to longtime Patriots radio announcer Scott Zolak, the rookie QB and his wife donated all their wedding gifts both physical items and cash to local shelters that help children in need. 'Didn't take one gift,' Zolak said during a recent segment. 'Everything was donated to kids that don't have shoes, that don't have Christmas.' Zolak revealed the couple made the donation quietly, without telling anyone publicly. It wasn't some social media stunt or brand collab. It was simply about giving back. The donations reportedly went to shelters and centers in North Carolina, where Maye grew up and became a hometown hero long before going pro. This wasn't for clout, it was a promise Maye and his wife made years ago This move wasn't impulsive. It turns out, Drake and Ann Michael had made this decision years ago, way before the NFL spotlight. According to reports, the couple promised each other that if Drake ever 'made it,' they would use their wedding as a chance to give back to the community that raised them. So when the wedding rolled around this June, they kept their word. Every dollar, every wrapped box, all gone straight to shelters helping kids in tough situations. It wasn't just about generosity; it was about following through on a dream they shared before fame, cameras, or the NFL ever entered the picture. Fans are calling it a rare act of class in today's NFL chaos Once the news got out, fans absolutely flooded social media with praise. Patriots supporters and even rival fans are hailing Maye as a true role model. 'STAR IN THE MAKING,' one person wrote on X. Others pointed out how rare it is for a rookie to do something this selfless, especially without publicizing it for attention. It's not often the NFL gives us a wholesome headline like this, especially one that's not part of a press release or PR tour. Drake Maye's gesture felt different. It felt real. And people noticed. "I'm the Achilles guy": Kevin Durant shares his insight on injury with NBA superstars like Jayson Tatum and Damian Lillard
Kevin Durant (Image via Jerome Miron/Imagn Images) If anyone knows how to make a comeback after a potentially career-altering injury, it's the newest acquisition of the Houston Rockets, Kevin Durant. The power forward suffered from a ruptured right Achilles tendon while he was with the Golden State Warriors during the 2019 NBA Finals. His injury led to a lot of speculation, and many believed that it was the end of KD in the NBA. But he proved everyone wrong, and returned to full strength in the next season, and has since proved that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything. And that is exactly what he shared with players like Jayson Tatum and Damian Lillard, both of whom are suffering from similar injuries currently. Kevin Durant was approached by Jayson Tatum and Damian Lillard after injury Jayson Tatum sustained a ruptured Achilles during the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks. Thankfully, the Boston Celtics star was able to undergo surgery the very next day and is currently in rehab, getting back to playing condition. Damian Lillard also suffered from a similar injury after tearing his Achilles tendon during the Milwaukee Bucks' postseason run this year. He, too, is in rehab currently and is most likely to miss most, if not all, of the 2025-2026 season. And at such trying times, both these players have turned to someone who has already gone through a similar phase in their career - Kevin Durant. Jayson Tatum and Damian Lillard (Image via X) KD recently appeared on the Mind the Game podcast alongside LeBron James and host Steve Nash, where he revealed that both Tatum and Lillard had been in contact with him since their injuries. He joked that he had become the 'Achilles guy' since his injury, and now a lot of players turn to him for advice. He said: 'Of course, you know JT and Dame hit me up — I feel like I'm the Achilles guy. I feel like a lot of guys have bounced back and become themselves again. Mine is the most popular, but I feel like a lot of guys have bounced back that I took inspiration from when I was going through my journey.' "I feel like I'm the Achilles guy." 😅 #kevindurant #injury #nba #shorts Back then, Kevin Durant's injury grabbed a lot of attention, and many believed that his injury would lead to the end of his career. But it's been 5 years since he came back, and he has made 5 consecutive All-Star appearances, and is not looking to stop anytime soon. Lillard is also currently in a similar position, with him being waived by the Bucks, and now he is in free agency. With him being absent for most of the upcoming season, the chances of him making a comeback are slim. But the veteran player is not ready to give up yet, and fans will be rooting for him to come back to court once he is fully recovered.
