White saviour or DC cash cow: James Gunn's ‘Superman'

Every decade has its own set of redefined superhero movies, remakes that retell the tale you probably know.
While Gal Gadot has become something of a beacon for Zack Snyder's take on the DC Comics set meant to compete with the ebbs and flows of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), their latest offering sees Superman take on new heights with James Gunn. Having found success for the MCU through projects such as Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad redux, Gunn has shown to be a critical darling and box office whisperer when it comes to bringing to life the caped comic book crusaders.
While 2002's Spider-Man trilogy has always been a benchmark, it is preceded by the success of the 1978 Superman, a legacy the movie makers behind the recent Flash movie nearly squandered with AI renditions of its past stars. However, Gunn's soft reboot heralds a new day for the DC cinematic universe's northern star, with David Corenswet taking over as its new face.
The new outing swings hard with relatable storytelling and all too familiar spins on well-known characters. Corenswet brings nothing new to the titular hero, aka Clark Kent. This works in the movie's favour as it isn't looking to explore coming of age or an origin. It also isn't looking to spend too much time pretending people do not know who the characters are. Louis (played by Beautiful Creatures and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel leading lady Rachel Broshnan) is coupled up with Superman as they explore the nitty gritty of life in the media.

South African-born producer Robert Ford is basking in international acclaim with his latest project, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story . The documentary, which arrives on Showmax from Friday, 25 July, has earned an impressive four Emmy nominations. Recognition comes in the categories of Directing, Writing, Editing, and Music Composition. Super/Man celebrates the extraordinary life of Christopher Reeve, immortalised as Superman. Reeve rose from an unknown stage actor to a Hollywood icon. His portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the gold standard for superhero films. Reeve starred in four Superman films and played a variety of roles, showcasing his remarkable range. Tragedy struck in 1995 when a horse-riding accident left Reeve paralysed from the neck down. Undeterred, he became a leading advocate for spinal cord injury research and disability rights, according to IMDB . He balanced activism, fatherhood, and continued work in the film industry, emerging as a real-life hero. Ford, originally from Wellington in the Western Cape, reflects on his journey, 'I wish I had known more about the South African film industry at that stage. I only discovered later that SA has such a vibrant film culture.' Now based in the UK, Ford has built a global reputation across film production roles over 25 years. The Superman documentary features never-before-seen home videos and a wealth of family archives. For the first time, Reeve's three children speak at length on film about their father. Hollywood friends and colleagues also share insights, giving the story depth and warmth. With a staggering 98% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Super/Man has swept more than 30 awards. These include Best Documentary at the 2025 BAFTAs and major wins from the Producers Guild of America and Critics' Choice Documentary Awards. Ford describes the biggest challenge of filming the Superman documentary: 'We had hundreds of hours of footage. The story could have gone in so many directions, so there were lots of difficult decisions in the edit. Letting go of the scenes you love is hard; it's hard killing your babies.' He is also passionate about representation. 'It's important that those stories are heard and not marginalised,' says Ford. For Super/Man , several disabled crew and consultants played key roles. Their insight shaped the film, especially on the complex ethics and realities of disability and cure. Ford's ties to home remain strong. 'I'd love to film in South Africa again. South Africa has great filmmakers and crew, and the filmmaking infrastructure is brilliant,' he says. He's thrilled for local viewers to watch his work and Superman documentary, adding, 'It's a universal story. Behind the onscreen superhero was a real-life hero.' What lessons can we learn from Superman about global crises and misinformation?

Okay, now that I have your attention. Superman has been in South African and worldwide cinemas for a few weeks, prompting fans of both James Gunn and Zack Snyder to come out in full force. Previous adaptations leaned into moral ambiguity, questions of existence, and had flashy fights in dim lighting as well as a storyline with a fight famously resolved by simply invoking the name "Martha." However, this Superman movie brings him back to his classic identity and concentrates on what makes us human, which is ironic, seeing as he is an alien. At its core, it's a message of hope - hope for the future, hope for mankind and hope for a better world. But then reality hits when you step out of the cinema: We don't live in Metropolis. We don't have Superman. And the world continues to grapple with war and misinformation. The past few years have been defined by global unrest, with headlines dominated by heartwrenching images of war and despair. War rages in Palestine and conflicts engulf African countries and other parts of the world. The Palestine-Israel war has resulted in thousands of deaths, humanitarian crises escalating, and reports of starvation. Additionally, media institutions struggle under the weight of political polarisation and misinformation in the age of AI. In light of this, Superman's dual identity as both a caped hero and journalist, Clark Kent, takes on an interesting and new relevance. When Superman is not saving the world, Clark Kent, a reporter for the fictional 'Daily Planet', is the embodiment of ethical journalism (okay, that ethics line gets blurred when he technically interviews himself, but we digress.) In today's media climate, where public trust in journalism dwindles thanks to AI and misinformation on social media, Kent's role serves as a reminder of what journalism could and should be. It's standing for what's right, even if there is a megalomaniac figure like Lex Luthor out to get you. And in the real world, there are definitely several Lex Luthors and Vasil Ghurkos. A recent Pew Research Center study found that only 26% of Americans say they trust national news organisations 'a lot.' According to a Statista report, Nigeria recorded the highest trust in news at 68%, followed closely by Scandinavian countries like Finland, Denmark, and Norway. In contrast, Hungary and Greece had the lowest trust levels at just 22%, partly due to concerns over media independence. If we take a look at local statistics, trust in South African media has seen a slight decline recently, with an overall trust score of 55%, a 6 percentage point drop from the previous year's 61%. Disinformation on social media continues to rise, while global conflicts are increasingly shaped by information warfare. 'Hope isn't naïve,' said Gunn in a press statement last year. 'It's essential. Especially when the world feels like it's burning.' The upcoming film reportedly leans into these ideals of hope, positioning Superman not as this detached godlike figure with amazing powers and laser eyes, but as someone who wrestles with how to help in a world that sometimes resists truth itself. Of course, we know that Superman's return doesn't offer solutions to our global crisis. He won't swoop in to stop the war in Gaza, he won't get his tech friends to tackle misinformation, and he cannot help feed starving people. But while fictional, his story (specifically this one) gives a real lesson: true justice doesn't come from power, it doesn't come from money. It comes from compassion and humanity.
