Podgorica forum promotes China-Montenegro trade, technology cooperation
Among the prominent attendees were Dino Tutundzic, state secretary of Montenegro's Ministry of Energy and Mining; Krsto Radenovic, state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management; Song Junji, vice governor of China's Shandong Province; and Lu Fangqing, charge d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Montenegro.
Addressing the forum, Radenovic highlighted the enormous potential for agricultural cooperation between the two countries. He expressed hope for the introduction of advanced Chinese technologies in agricultural production and food processing, as well as support for building modern irrigation and water resource management systems. He also welcomed joint investments with Chinese partners to help bring more Montenegrin agricultural products into the Chinese market.
Lu noted that China regards Montenegro as an important partner in Central and Eastern Europe. She highlighted the significant achievements under the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-CEEC cooperation framework, particularly in transportation infrastructure and green energy. She expressed optimism about the future of bilateral cooperation.
On behalf of Shandong Province, Song said the province has achieved fruitful results in economic and trade cooperation with Montenegro, with several Shandong enterprises investing and operating in the country. He expressed hope that Shangdong and Montenegro would expand investment in key sectors and deepen cooperation in education, technology and people-to-people exchanges.
During a roadshow promotional session, Radojica Petrovic, deputy director-general of the Montenegrin Investment Agency, presented the country's development plans in energy, infrastructure, and telecommunications.
Noting that China became Montenegro's second-largest investor in 2020, he underscored the vast potential for future cooperation across various sectors.
The forum concluded with a B2B session where Chinese and Montenegrin enterprises held in-depth discussions and reached several preliminary cooperation agreements.

BRICS nations to denounce Trump tariffs
RIO DE JANEIRO — BRICS leaders meeting in Rio de Janeiro from Sunday are expected to decry Donald Trump's hardline trade policies, but are struggling to bridge divides over crises roiling the Middle East. Emerging nations representing about half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output are set to unite over what they see as unfair US import tariffs, according to sources familiar with summit negotiations. Since coming to office in January, Trump has threatened allies and rivals alike with a slew of punitive tariffs. His latest salvo comes in the form of letters due to be sent starting Friday informing trading partners of new tariff rates expected next week on July 9. Diplomats from 11 emerging nations, including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, have been busy drafting a statement condemning the economic uncertainty. Any final summit declaration is not expected to mention the United States or its president by name. But it is expected to be a clear political shot directed at Washington. 'We're anticipating a summit with a cautious tone: it will be difficult to mention the United States by name in the final declaration,' Marta Fernandez, director of the BRICS Policy Center at Rio's Pontifical Catholic University said. This is particularly the case for China, which has only recently negotiated with the US to lower steep tit-for-tat levies. 'This doesn't seem to be the right time to provoke further friction' between the world's two leading economies, Fernandez said. Xi no show Conceived two decades ago as a forum for fast-growing economies, the BRICS have come to be seen as a Chinese-driven counterbalance to Western power. But the summit's political punch will be depleted by the absence of China's Xi Jinping, who is skipping the annual meeting for the first time in his 12 years as president. 'I expect there will be speculation about the reasons for Xi's absence,' said Ryan Hass, a former China director at the US National Security Council who is now with the Brookings Institution think tank. 'The simplest explanation may hold the most explanatory power. Xi recently hosted Lula in Beijing,' said Hass. The Chinese leader will not be the only notable absentee. War crime-indicted Russian President Vladimir Putin is also opting to stay away, but will participate via video link, according to the Kremlin. Still, the Xi no-show is a blow to host President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who wants Brazil to play a bigger role on the world stage. In the year to November 2025, Brazil will have hosted a G20 summit, a BRICS summit, and COP30 international climate talks, all before heading into fiercely contested presidential elections next year, in which he is expected to run. Middle path Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, whose nation is still reeling from a 12-day conflict with Israel is also skipping the meeting. A source familiar with the negotiations said the BRICS countries were still in disagreement over how to respond to the wars in Gaza and between Iran and Israel. Iranian negotiators are pushing for a tougher collective stance that goes beyond referencing the need for the creation of a Palestinian state and for disputes to be resolved peacefully. Artificial intelligence and health will also be on the agenda at the summit. Original members of the bloc Brazil, Russia, India, and China have been joined by South Africa and, more recently, by Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia and Indonesia. Analysts say that it has given the grouping more potential international punch. But it has also opened many new fault lines. Brazil hopes that countries can take a common stand at the summit, including on the most sensitive issues. Kota Kinabalu: The Wisma Tionghua joint development project between the United Sabah Chinese Communities Association of Kota Kinabalu (USCCAKK) and the Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce (SUCCC) is nearing the final stage of contract negotiations. USCCAKK President Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen said once contract details are finalised, the association's committee will be authorised to sign an agreement with SUCCC and developer Cahaya Riang Sdn Bhd. Advertisement 'The development will provide a sustainable financial base for USCCAKK, enabling us to continue our work in Chinese cultural, educational and community affairs,' she said at the association's 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM), Parents' Day and 50th Anniversary celebration, here, Monday. She said USCCAKK hopes to reach a consensus with the joint venture partner and proceed with the signing to begin construction. The AGM also saw delegates unanimously support a resolution empowering the USCCAKK committee to proceed with the agreement. Also present were SUCCC President Datuk Michael Lui and Cahaya Riang Sdn Bhd representative SK Tan, who briefed members on the project's progress. Lui said he was pleased to see unity among USCCAKK members, adding that the long-delayed project could now move forward. 'Neither SUCCC nor USCCAKK owns a building. We hope this development will serve as a lasting base for both associations' operations,' he said, adding that SUCCC's AGM will be held in Tawau on July 19, where the update will be shared with 25 affiliate chambers. Tan, representing the developer, said the company is ready to begin once all agreements and approvals are in place. Susan noted that USCCAKK, established in 1975, marked its 50th anniversary this year, and paid tribute to early Chinese settlers in Sabah for their contributions. USCCAKK currently comprises 15 Chinese community associations, including Hokkien, Hin Ann, Nam Ann, Ann Koai, Foo Chow, Eng Choon, Lung Yen, Sze Yi, Kwong Siew, Hakka, Teo Chew, Tai Poo, Hainan, San Chiang and Northern Chinese. She said the association has been committed to preserving Chinese culture through annual events such as the Chinese New Year Unicorns, Dragons and Lions Dance Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, International Women's Day, and others.
