HONG KONG: Hong Kong's retailers are battling against shifting consumer habits, as visitors spend less and locals head across the border to China for cheaper dining and shopping, leading to a wave of store closures.
A 36-year-old Chinese seafood restaurant chain and a popular high-end food court in the bustling Causeway Bay district closed this week.
Other recent closures in the financial hub include cinema chains, a major catering group, a 41-year-old bakery and a three-decade-old congee chain.
Weak domestic spending and cheaper prices in Shenzhen, bordering Hong Kong, have compounded retailers' woes, according to industry figures and analysts.
Furthermore, China's economic slowdown, US-China geopolitical tensions and a national security clampdown have also weighed on business sentiment and hurt Hong Kong's small and open economy.
The city's GDP is forecast to grow between 2%-3% this year, compared with 2.5% last year and 3.2% in 2023.
"The change in consumption patterns is irreversible," said Annie Yau Tse, chairwoman of Hong Kong's Retail Management Association.
Hong Kong was once a prime destination for high-spending mainland visitors but mass anti-government protests in 2019 and Covid restrictions led to a decline in its appeal.
The authorities have launched initiatives to revive tourism, including hosting large-scale events such as Coldplay concerts and a Manchester United exhibition match at a new harbourside stadium.
While visitors are returning to near 2018 levels with May arrivals up 20% to 4.08 million visitors versus 4.95 million in 2018, spending remains soft.
Retail sales by value rose 2.4% in May from a year earlier to HK$31.3 billion (US$4 billion), the first rise in 14 months, government data showed on Wednesday. However, it remains only around 77% of the HK$40.5 billion in May 2018.
"We are trying hard to think of ways to turn the traffic into business," Yau Tse said.
Jack Tong, director of Savills Research & Consultancy, said the recent string of closures was due to a "structural shift in the local retail market" starting from 2023.
It is "no longer strong enough to support such retail trades and would be beyond repair even by further reducing rents."
Overall prime street rents in the first quarter have fallen back to 2003 levels, he said.
"The rise in local outbound travel in Hong Kong and changes in mainland tourists' spending patterns and preferences in Hong Kong and Macau continued to weigh on the overall retail sector during the financial year," jeweller Chow Tai Fook said.
Last month, Cafe de Coral reported a 29.6% drop in net profit for the 2024/25 year ended in March, citing a weak economy and consumer sentiment.
Despite the tough conditions, some signs of recovery are emerging.
Vipul Sutariya, who attended the jewellery fair in June, said Chinese dealers were back at the fair "not to buy immediately but to ask, which is the biggest change in the past 1.5 years," he said. "In my view that's a good sign." - Reuters

TOKYO: Japan will from January attempt to extract rare earth minerals from the ocean floor in the deepest trial of its kind, the director of a government innovation programme said Thursday. Earlier this week the country pledged to work with the United States, India and Australia to ensure a stable supply of critical minerals, as concern grows over China's dominance in resources vital to new technologies. Rare earths -- 17 metals difficult to extract from the Earth's crust -- are used in everything from electric vehicles to hard drives, wind turbines and missiles. China accounts for almost two-thirds of rare earth mining production and 92 percent of global refined output, according to the International Energy Agency. A Japanese deep-sea scientific drilling boat called the Chikyu will from January conduct a 'test cruise' to retrieve ocean floor sediments that contain rare earth elements, said Shoichi Ishii, director of Japan's Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Programme. 'The test to retrieve the sediments from 5,500 metres (3.4 miles) water depth is the first in the world,' he told AFP. 'Our goal... of this cruise is to test the function of all mining equipment,' so the amount of sediment extracted 'doesn't matter at all', Ishii added. The Chikyu will drill in Japanese economic waters around the remote island of Minami Torishima in the Pacific -- the easternmost point of Japan, also used as a military base. Japan's Nikkei business daily reported that the mission aims to extract 35 tonnes of mud from the sea floor over around three weeks. Each tonne is expected to contain around two kilograms (4.4 pounds) of rare earth minerals, which are often used to make magnets that are essential in modern electronics. Deep-sea mining has become a geopolitical flashpoint, with anxiety growing over a push by US President Donald Trump to fast-track the practice in international waters. Beijing has since April required licences to export rare earths from China, a move seen as retaliation for US curbs on the import of Chinese goods. Environmental campaigners warn that deep-sea mining threatens marine ecosystems and will disrupt the sea floor. The International Seabed Authority, which has jurisdiction over the ocean floor outside national waters, is meeting later this month to discuss a global code to regulate mining in the ocean depths. – AFP

The Fed's exam tends to set the tone for how aggressive banks are in returning capital to shareholders through dividends and buybacks. — Bloomberg WASHINGTON: Wall Street's largest lenders boosted their dividends after passing this year's Federal Reserve (Fed) stress tests, a hurdle that regulators made easier to clear by softening some of the requirements laid out in previous years. JPMorgan Chase & Co, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Bank of America Corp were among firms that raised quarterly payouts after the Fed's annual review last week showed that all 22 banks examined would maintain enough capital to withstand a hypothetical economic downturn. Citigroup Inc, Wells Fargo & Co and Morgan Stanley, as well as several other large lenders, also boosted their dividends. In addition, JPMorgan's board authorised a US$50bil share buyback, and Morgan Stanley reauthorised a multiyear share repurchase programme of up to US$20bil, with no expiration date. The Fed's exam – a product of the 2008 financial crisis – tends to set the tone for how aggressive banks are in returning capital to shareholders through dividends and buybacks. It requires banks to consider hypothetical crisis scenarios and estimate the losses they might face based on their books of business. Last week, all 22 banks comfortably passed after determining they would withstand more than US$550bil in losses. The results showed that 'large banks are well positioned to weather a severe recession,' the Fed said. The scenario in this year's tests led to lower loan losses in a less severe scenario, due to the mild slowing of the US economy in 2024, among other factors. The results were also affected by lower private equity losses and higher net revenue. The Fed announced last year that it planned to make changes to its process, and in April unveiled a proposal to average results over two years when setting capital requirements. Fed vice chair for supervision Michelle Bowman has said that potential changes would help the agency address the 'excessive volatility in the stress test results and corresponding capital requirements.' From January to May 2025, total retail sales in Hong Kong amounted to HK$ 155.1 billion, reflecting a y-o-y decline of 4.0%. Visitor spending has become more cautious, with a growing preference for cultural experiences and value-for-money retail offerings. As a result, traditionally popular high-end retail categories have been most affected. Sales in the Jewellery & Watches and Apparel & Accessories sectors declined by 8.8% and 5.7% y-o-y, respectively. The Medicines & Cosmetics and Food, Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco sectors recorded modest growth, rising by 3.4% and 2.7% y-o-y, rates generally trended upwards across core retail districts in Q2 2025. The vacancy rate in Causeway Bay showed the most notable increase to climb to 13.2%, from 5.3% last quarter. Vacancy rates in Mongkok and Central rose slightly q-o-q, to 9.5% and 8.6%, respectively, while Tsimshatsui remained stable at 9.4%. Retail leasing activity was most active in Mongkok in the Q2 period, supported by the district's relatively attractive rental levels and stable tourist street retail rents generally fell in Q2, in response to lifted vacancy pressure. Rents in Causeway Bay fell by 3.6% q-o-q, followed by Tsimshatsui and Mongkok at 3.4% and 1.7% q-o-q, respectively. Rents in Central rose slightly at 0.2% q-o-q, supported by resilient local demand. In the F&B sector, rents across districts recorded a mild decline on a q-o-q basis, within a 1% "The Hong Kong retail market is experiencing a reshuffling of tenants.
